I am not sure what those are. I am putting on a set of the HD motor covers on my '05 sporty today. Cost was around $150-$200 (not sure becuase the dealer gave me $500 woth of free accessories) and they cover the whole motor. I will post some picks ASAP

Well your link worked to get to a website selling Harley parts... but I can't tell what part in particular your looking at? Do you have a part number or a list of click here, then here, then here, etc to get to the parts you're looking at?

That ($295) seems pretty cheap compared to the factories $1235 for basically the same kit (http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444184186 7&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309035291&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309035291&bmUID=1101773601263&bmLocale=en_US). The kit your pointing at only has outer covers for the rocker boxes, the factory kit has both the inner and the outer rocker box covers, kinda more along the lines of the PN VT-420690 on the same website for $850.

I think that these kits replace you current polished covers, they don't go over the existing covers.

Yea, I'm an oldtime Motorhead fan, Flathead is a Lemmy fan too.

It looks to me that these are "slip-on" chrome covers.

Here are the HD slip on covers. VERY HIGH QUALITY. The ones posted by chipdog4 look chopped up. These were fairly easy to install. However, one the primary side the clutch cable had to be removed. Take a look.

Oh my gawd, you're right those do like like slip on covers.

That's a nasty way to get chrome!! Don't do it, I can not freaking believe that those would look good at all.

For $300 you can get either the chrome primary cover or the cam cover or the outer rocker covers from HD.... Take your time do one piece at a time and have a quality job when you are done.

Besides you'd have to remove the whole primary slip on cover just to change the primary fluid :yikes The ones that dmraco show have an oprning for the chain inspection cover, so at least you can change your primary oil.

yeah, you probibaly right i just needed some one to tell me that is all

You don't have to take the cover off to change fluid. The derby cover is seperate( in the bike photo) to add fluid and you still have the drain plug. ;)

The pics above have the covers on it. I have seen them and they don't look bad. Unless your HD fan you probably could not tell the difference.

Gary

It sure looks like those covers on the previous page are a single piece of stamped steel. I don't see any screw holes or other way to get the derby cover cover off. And there definately isn't any way to get at the chain inspection cover.

The pic of the "KIT" is a solid cover. But the photo of the bike has the sportster collection derby cover and the chain adjuster cover is accessable too. HD now makes "Covers" for your bike now too.

Yeah. Mine are the Harley covers. I picked it up and it was sitting next to a 2005 XL1200C. It was almost impossible to tell the difference. If you are going to use covers, use the Harley. For $200 you can do the whole lower motor and have no issues with fluids. If I had a cool $1000, I would have bought the real thing. The cash I saved I used to buy pipes, SE air box, jet kit, sissy bar and mounts, and a new cam. Every one has different priorities. Good luck.

If anyone wants higher quaility close up picks, let me know and I will e-amil them to you. Dail-up beware!! :yikes

Only for the '04 and up though which is good news for me, at that price I'd be tempted to buy a set for my '03 and that would make Flathead mad at me :frownthre Although Billy would like me better with more chrome  So I can keep everyone happy, no peer pressure either way so it's a good thing they aren't available for the older style engines :wonderlan

How much would it cost to take all your pieces off and get those chromed?

I would think it would be less than $1200.

I think I would get the Harley chrome one piece at a time to fool myself into thinking its cheaper...

Go here and check put the prices on the components.

Now that sounds more reasonable. I think I would consider this before anything else, actually I might, come next winter.

I saw those covers at a rally I was at. Look very close at the application (year) they are made for because many were marked wrong. Also the quality did not look or feel that great. At least the HD stuff usually wont get a hole in it if you did drop your ride, deform under heat/cold temps and will fit.

I've been looking at doing something with my covers also. I was thinking about having the original covers chromed. I would think having slip-on covers over the engine would create lots of hiding places for dirt. I still have to see what it cost though, I don't even know if my covers will work. I have the aluminum wrinkle finish and I was told that can be stripped off, but I don't know for sure. I was also told not to even bother with the chrome because most the other engine items are polished aluminum. The same person said to strip the finish and polish the aluminum so it would match. Does anyone know if this would work?

I have been told the silver coating must be completely taken off or the chrome will not stick. My buddy has an old dyna lowrider and most reputible chome shops will not even touch his wheel that he is interested in getting chromed. He is now looking into powder coating them a color.

Polishing keep the other stuff nice too. I did not think about the dirt, but they come offf so easy, it would be nothing to take them off once a year to clean behind them since you do not have to mess with fluids leaking out.

Check out these guys:

Back in the spring a buddy of mine gave me a MC newspaper and if I remember correctly these guys were advertising chrome for around $525 with a core exchange.

I got the gear case slip on cover from Vtwin for christmas. It looks ok but I'd rather have put the $65 twords chroming it. the chrome primary looks much better. now the slip on eyebrow cover looks real good, I didn't know it was a slip on till I was trying to figure out how to adjust the headlight.
