Outlaw, you must have been in Bavaria for a while. Servus gave it away. I lived in Germany for 13 years from 86-99 with a 1.5 year stint in Hungary. I always prefered the Landstrasse myself but a good test run from wiesbaden to Frankfurt was always a nice tuning tri eventhough it was a 120 zone. So, where were you?

Yeah I'vebeen living here out of the Army for 16 years now and four years before that I was in the Army here in Schweinfurt so a total of 20 years now(Damn thats a long time!!) I live in Bamberg in Unterfranken now.I like the landstraße because there are too many idiots on the autobahn

Were you a member of the Rhein Valley Legion chapter of HOG. Just curious, maybe we have crossed paths. I used to go to most of the events between 93 and 96. I am sure if you hung around that crowd we have probably met.

I ride the Autobahn to work but also prefer the Landstrassen on weekends or the ride home from work. I am planning some long distance Ironbutt ride and plan to use mainly Autobahn for these rides so I can keep the speed up to around 100 MPH.

What do you mean, "by the time the good weather rolls in here"? We are having wonderful weather in Baden-Wuertemberg.

Riding the RG today!! I have Nasty Nancy tore down right now. I am gonna put her back to stock since I know she will not pass the new inspection standards. Lots of bikes are not passing inspection!!

I got a copy of the reg and it says that as long as you are running stock pipes they can not fail you. Also it ha a laydown on how the noise inspection has to be done. I think I will take a video camera with me when I go through inspection so I will be able to fight them if they try to fail any of me vehicals.

I am more concerned about my SRT4 not passing even though it is totally stock other than a blow-off valve.

Yeah I will be interested how hard it will be to get my Ironhead through TÜV when I am that far.I have done alot of changes to my bike so it probably wont be easy. And as for "Good weather" its nice here too but so long my bike ain't runnin' its bad weather!!!

Hi.
Riding Autobahn is always boring.
Doesn't matter which bike you ride.
The same goes to american freeways.
Buells and Sportsters are made for winding and open roads.

Hi.I got to correct myself,I recalled the European Ironbutt.

1000 km

It's the basic IRONBUTT and most adicts start with this one. You have to ride 1000 km on European backroads in one go. No meter of Autobahn, Motorway or Autoroute is allowed. The distance has to be completed in 24h or less. If you want to average 80 km/h (50mp/h) on backroads, you have to go at 110 km/h all the time, allowing for the odd gas-and-pee stop every 200 km. I rode mine from Monaco to La Rochelle, crossing the French "Massif Central" and it took me just over 15 hours. The "One K" gets the 10 by 15cm patch shown here.

1000 miles

All the same, just longer (1609km). If you calculate an average 80km/h there's a good 20 hours to go. Very few can do that. But some backroads are better than others. Some of the German Bundesstrassen, French Route Nationales, Italian Strada Statales or English A roads allow for a higher average. They are pretty much built to motorway standards but work just fine for us (A11 in GB, B65 in D, N10 in F....). I tried the long one three times and I could not do it without making some distance on those faster roads. Start in the afternoon and ride through the night when there is less traffic, and never go to the limit. Try to make half the distance in the first eight hours. It's a sucker! Mine went from Cambrai to Rome and was rather difficult. Want to show off? You are OK to sport the 30 by 30 cm "Big Pig" on your jacket, meaning you can wear our orange colored Ironbutt center crest. IRONBUTT top rocker and EUROPE bottom rocker come with it, but because a lot of MCs don't like three-part-colors in their area, rarely sported.

X-Town

The most difficult one. This one requires a witness and is pretty stupid. It is also the most challenging one. Ride through a town center (anything from 80 to 100 000 inhabitants upwards will do) without putting a foot on the ground. In daytime. You will soon find out how to aproach traffic lights and that you just can't stop at each and every red light. Now you don't have to do it in rush hour traffic, but somewhere between 0900h and 1600h on a working day is OK. You won't believe how much times you will have to do this one. Noone made it on the first three attempts. I crossed Lille (400 000 inhabitants) on a Monday around 1130h and made it after having failed five times. If you want the world to know about it, show two patches IRONBUTT and EUROPE, each 10 by 3 cm on your gear.

I had heard about the ride where you can't put your feet down but I did not know what it was called. Sounds like is would be a bitch especially the way train track guards like to stay down in Europe for 30 minutes when there even isn't a freakin' train for miles.

I am going for the US Ironbutt certificate so I guess Autobahn is allowed. The non-autobahn Ironbutt sounds much better though and I am sure would be a much nicer (more beautiful) ride. I would still try to stick to mostly Bundesstrassen though since the traffic tends to move pretty good on them.

Hi.

I wouldn't take 1000 Autobahn kilometers for a big challenge.
Maybe because of the difficulty not to fall asleep.

My longest Autobahn trip was 1100 Km long.I did it in heavy rain and storm most of the time and it demanded 16 hours from me and my XL.
I slept like dead for almost 20 hours the next day.

BTW,no need to worry about train track guards in German cities.
Actually they are hard to find.

Yeah, but you can still find them on the backroads sometimes. There was one right outside where I first lived in Gelnhausen-Meerholz in Hessen that if you got there when the light turned red you could figure on sitting for at least 20 minutes and for 15 of those no freakin' train was coming by. Or one would come by after about 5 - 10 minutes and the gates would stay down waiting for anohter train to come by 10 minutes later. It is no wonder that they have to block the both sides of the road or people would be driving aroudn them like in the USA. Or course that is much more dangerous in Europe since the trains are electric and you don't even hear them until they get right to you.

Jackster, my wife is from Kaposvar. It is 40 minutes south of Lake Balaton. I was there as a contractor with Raytheon Aerospace during Joint endeavor/joint guard.
