Hi,
I'm in the process of selling my Triumph Speedmaster and will be getting another cruiser to replace it. Right now an 04+ 1200c is leading the list as the most likely replacement by I'm also considering a Superglide, Victory Vegas, or Yamaha Warrior in that order.
I also own a 89 Honda VFR and a 01 Suzuki DR-650SE.
I've enjoyed reading the forums for the last few days. I'm sure I'll have some specific questions as soon as the Triumph sells and I start looking for a bike to replace it.

The Speedmaster was a lot of fun to ride and definitely a cool bike but mine had a lot of build quality problems. The frame was rusting when I bought it. The tank liner started peeling in less than two years which would clog the filter and carbs and cause the bike to stop running as well as some other trifling issues.
The peeling tank seems to be a very common problem. If your friend buys one make sure that the tank has a brown lining and not a grey lining.
Also the Triumph motor was more biased for the top end which doesn't fit a cruiser very well IMO.
On the plus side is that the bike handled pretty well for a cruiser with decent ground clearance. It also had universal acceptance from Harley and Metric riders (everyone thinks it's cool).
Send you friend to bonnevilleamerica.com for more info on Americas and Speedmasters.

Welcome from California. I just last December made the decision to go with the Sportster over the Speedmaster (which I realy liked) so I read your post with a lot of interest. Good to know about that tank issue and the other things too. For me it was the belt over the chain, the hydraulic lifters, fuel injection, and the abundance of parts and service throughout this fair country. Also, the day after Christmas, when I went out to buy a bike, the Triumph dealer was closed!:D
Happy shopping!
