I do like the looks of the blacked out iron XL/XR looks. Atleast it looks just like a 1970 XR750.

Looks like a labour of love, how long has it taken to complete the job?

And welcome to the forum, by the way.

glad you like it.
took it to the "WILD HOGS" film promotion in london today, only its second outing and it caused a bit of a stir, is it a real one,one guy asked, doh!!!
why has it got 2 carbs.!!!
they are a bit rare this side of the pond, dont think ive even seen one in standard trim on the road.
the suns out and here to stay, thanks to "global warming" so its gonna get plenty of use.

certainly is,
like any thing its always ongoing. nearly a year to date.
it was in a fair state when i got it, but wanted to tidy it up, especially around the bar area, so all the matt black had to go in favour of stainless steel or chrome, gone are the switch gear, just the 2 buttons, starter and horn. ditched the rev counter, out went the original idiot lights, for leds.
hid 2 55w lights behind the number board, incase i get cought out late one nite.
repositioned the footpegs back to give it a more positive feel, steering damper as it gets a bit flighty on hard accelaration.
not sure im gonna keep the tyres ive put on, they look the part for what its supposed to be, but powering out of a bend its like being on a dirt track, with a nice controllable drift. it really is like cocking your leg over a broom stick, it feels that thin.

Gssexah, great looking bike. You can really see the attentioin to detail and pride in the build. I think it turned out fantastic. I'd love to ride with you and see how my bike would fare against yours. I don't have a recent dyno run but it was pulling 82hp and 71lbs of torque before the street tracker conversion. It seems now to really pull harder since tghe conversion, but its probably just my imagination. :) As you said they are a blast to ride. :) Regards, Tim

I'm building the street tracker as cash permits. I got some good stuff done this weekend I think.

Garrett, nice job so far. What is the other bike in the background with the red, white and black paint job? Just curious, it looks to be a tracker too. :) Thanks, chieftd

P.S. I'm a huge flat track fan!

Hey thanks chieftd! I gotta tell ya I've admired your sporty as well!

This forum's been great for me for new ideas.

The bike in the background is a '76 Harley SX250 2-stroke that I "Street-Tracked". It's a fun, really light little bike. There are some pics of it here:

http://s189.photobucket.com/albums/z72/garrett302/

While we're here... How does your tail section mount to your frame? I had to do some "hand-fab" to get mine mounted, and I'm a bit worried it's not going to have enough support.

I love flat track too, and if I had more time and cash, I'd get off my butt and go racing! Almost every bike I look at these days, I'm trying to figure out if I could Street Track it. Guess I'm addicted. I think Sportsters make the best ones (except for real XRs).

Thanks again!

Garrett, great looking SX250, I really like the paint and the expansion chamber. How does it run? I real wheelie bike, I'll bet. :) As for my seat it has an aluminum bracket in the front that fits with the tongue on the frame. In the rear it has holes drilled in the side to mate up with the frame hole just behind where the shocks mount.

I had a billet piece fabricated that fits inside the indention in the frame behind the shock bolt holes and it these billet pieces have a nice thick tab that hangs down. We drilled the tab and that is where my rear turns signals mount. This way it is a very sturdy mount with no play or wiggle at all.

The seat fits nice a snug on the frame. Here's a pic, the only thing different now than when the pic was taken is the ends of the billet pieces were sawed off to match the frame. They were made a little long in the beginning.

Hope this helps. Regards, Tim

Helps a lot, Tim!

Pretty much how I did it too, though I had to handfab a couple of brackets for the rear of the tail section, as it doesn't come down quite as far as yours.

I need to adjust them a bit, as I think I over-stressed the tail section. The clear coat has cracked a bit around the mounting holes. No real big deal, as I'm going to be doing some paint soon, and I'll make sure everything fits better first.

Thanks!
Garrett

Opps, forgot to answer this. It runs great, a little screamer! I don't have the jetting quite right yet. The pipe and open air filter really did a number there. It'll definitely get the front wheel off the ground! You can pretty much lift the whole bike by yourself too.

I have to get the license plate mounted somewhere that makes sense (look closely at the pics, and you'll see what I mean), and get the title search started, and it's off to the races!

Garrett, yeah I had the same problem of the fibreglass overtorquing in the beginning. We made the billet bracket thick to fill in the gap inside so the seat had something to mount flush to and it really did the trick.

Good luck and keep the pics coming. chieftd

All,
I've made some new changes/photos of my 'tracker.

Switched to 1" risers, and ditched the "Mickey Mouse".
Progressive 1" lower fork springs.
Progressive 15" 413s on the rear.

Suspension changes pulled the rake in a tad. Handles great!

Chainsikle rearsets.
HD Run/Turn/Brake conversion.

Getting there, slowly but surely...

Sorry I seem to have taken over this thread. Just a couple more pics to show off the carbon fiber xr tank, and new paint. I know, it's kinda poseur-ish, but I love the 750 graphics.

Great job! Was the paint job expensive? I really like the GT stripe too. Only thing you now need is some Flanders flat track bars. :)

Have fun riding your new toy. Regards, Tim

Nice bike, but those pipes don't look right to me. 2-2 high SuperTrapps or a nice 2-1 would look better, IMO.

Yea, that would definitely be more authentic (better performance too), but I've always liked the sort of no frills look of a set of TT pipes on a Triumph, so that's what I was going for. They were definitely a whole lot cheaper than a set of Supertrapps.

i just posted a rightside view in the gallery before i start the restoration, she won't look much different after i'm done except everything will be clean and deteriorated parts will be replaced, i'm only using "period" correct parts for this if i can. the last "new" part was installed in 1974, so everything is at least 33 years old.
i am installing new tt100 tires because they handle great on the street. if anyone wants to know what ancient parts this is constructed from, just ask.

How do you like this one?
It is an XR 1000 engine in a monoshock frame, aluminum cyls, high CR pistons and belt-driven primary!!!
The guy who owns this unique masterpiece is dutch-brother Jan Willem Jansen. He uses it for flat track racing in Europe.
