Aloha from Hawaii, I have been putting off showing any in progress photos I just wanted to show off the finished product. After much procrastination (18 months) I finally got off my ass and got the bike to the mechanic and got all my parts together. Well, after 6 weeks below is the finished product. I think it is a bitchin ride and a nice "homage" to the XR-750 streettracker style. I couldn't believe how much work was done to it until we got it all torn down. It was torn down to the frame and motor only. I began with powder coating the wheels and a new 18" rear wheel. New Dunlop K-180 tires now shod the wheels. The triple trees, rocker box covers, side cases, fork sliders, chain guard, ignition and battery cover were all powder coated too. New progressive shocks on the rear (15") and springs in the front. Flanders flat track bars, new controls, new front fender, new rear fender seat combination, new turn signals, rotors, mirror, pegs, chain and sprockets, and all cables and hoses too. I had a custom guy pinstripe the wheels for me and it turned out great. To top it all off I got a set of the Super Trapp 2 into 2 pipes and I shined them up just a bit.

Many thanks to Chris at Trak-Tek he supplied the seat/fender, shocks, chain and sprockets, handlebars, pipes and a wealth of knowledge.

Here's a couple of pics. Hope you like it. :)

Regards, chieftd

Way to GO! Too bad the factory did not get the theme down as well on the XR1200. All they needed was a photo of yours.

Chris at Trak-Tek comes through again!

I hope you DO ride that thing on dirt roads. It screams dual-sport.

Looks Good.:clap

Shoei,

The bike is a 1989 Sportster and the front wheel is the stock 19" wheel. The 18" rear wheel is off of a 1979 Sportster and I found it here in Hawaii at a motorcycle salvage place. I had them both powder coated silver, new bearings and the pin striped applied. The rear wheel needed a few spacers to fit properly but it was an easy fit. For me the pinstripe just really sets off the whole look in the wheels.

Ed in AZ,
I would like to take it out on the dirt some time to see how it handles. It is still very heavy so it might not work the best except on a track.

I rode it today and when I stopped at one of the harley dealers I had a small crowd appreciating it and asking questions. One guy thought it was a real XR, but I had to admit it was not. :) The bike looks better now than it has in a decade and I have a renewed interest in riding.

Kindest Regards, chieftd

Yep, chieftd

Nice look... Nothing like swapping 16" to 18" or 19" to improve late Iron and Evo Sportys handling... a few of my mates have, conclusive... Mine's old so it's already like that.

You need to tear-up 'the road to Hanna'.

Yours should be much better than mine since it's a lighter solid mount and you now have the right tires for dirt. Tires are the most limiting factor on my machine. I don't do much dirt riding, but other than the weight, Sportsters do fine. I take it easy off road cause I don't want to go down. Riding carefully I'm sure you would have a good time.:)

Chieftd:

I'm thinking of doing similar mods to my 2002 883R. Can you answer a couple of questions? How do you like the pipes? Loud, not so loud, good power? Also, the tires - have you ridden in the rain yet? I ride a lot in the rain and need good tires for that, but the tires you have on look great. Finally, how did you do the spacers for the rear wheel? How did you measure and what did you use?

Awsome bike, man. :clap

Wolfgang, the pipes are nice. I had a V&H Propipe before and they're about the same noise level but the tone is a little different. The tires are OK so far but I only have a few miles on them and no rain riding yet. They are dirt track tires but they are DOT rated. Not sure how they would do in the rain. The spacer for the rear wheel is a typical wheel spacer about 5/16" thick that helps line up the sprocket side. The old 18" wheel is not the same width at the hub as the newer models. The spacer went between the hub and the sprocket. I didn't do the work so I'm not exactly sure where the measurement was taken. I'm sure others on here could give you a better feel for the measurement than I..sorry about that one. :) Regards, chieftd

P.S. good luck on the transformation, I really like mine.

Thanks again all for the comments.

Soundrider, The rear wheel is an 18" that came from a 1979 Sportster. The tire is a Dunlop K-180 120/90x18. Its a dirt track tire but its DOT rated. Doing good on the street so far. :)
