Just want to know how low can you go , been told too low and the oilpump doesn't work , but it sounds good on low idle. what's yours like ???

850rpm when it's almost fully warm. After its nice and hot it idles between 950 and 1000rpm. Used to like the way it idled before the rejetting. Had that rhythmic lumpety lump to it. Now it idles too smooth.

Around 950-1000 rpm for me. Heard lower than that, sufficient oil doesn't get where it's supposed to go.

If you set the idle too low the oil pressure is reduced . Not a good thing to do . I keep mine around 1100 rpm . Keeping the idle up makes it nice and smooth when you are sitting at a light and actually helps in smoother shifting .
Personally , I think most Harley riders idle their bikes to low .

Used to idle at 1k,and I experienced some dieseling after long runs in hot temperatures. I lowered it to around 900-950...no more problems.

1000 to 1050 rpms (tach). Sportsters do not have a lot of oil pressure below 950 rpms. I would not go much lower than 950.

Mine idles at right around a grand once warmed up.

OK
There have been multipal statements on oil pressure at lower idle RPM. What is the lowest oil pressure you can have at idle, and still be OK.....no guesses now, I would like to have the real thing

My factory manual states, Slow Idle 950-1050 rpm.

Renegade's right: page 4-12 of the Hundred-Dollar FM says to idle it between 950-1050 revs. Good lookin', Renegade!

Might not register on a oil press guage, but they work off of volume more then pressure, you should be alright above 800rpm's.

Just doesn't sound right if idle is above 1100

Just doesn't sound right if idle is above 1100

Get it too low and it won't take long for it to really start to not sound right :p :smoke

I have researched this awhile back and found out that your OK done to 700RPM's under 700 the motor starts to starve for oil, so your safe at 800 and above on RPM's.

oh ya i keep mine between 875 to 900 RPM's

How do you change this?

I change it with the idle adjustment thumb screw dangling off my carb. Yours will be different if you don't have a Mikuni.

i prefer around 900 but notices something interesting, at 900 (hot) i failed my states (AZ) emissions test, went home cranked it up to 1100 was kinda uncomfortable with the curb idle that fast but...passed emissions...go figure...i figured unburned fuel at the lower rpm but i've been wrong before....any theories?

I have mine at around 1000.....Better a little high than suffer the consequences.

That's the magic number, 700. That's what I do also, 800 to 850 for me.
