View Full Version : Mixed pushrods... help please...
Lajmizz 26th February 2007, 14:56 After removing heads I've mixed my pushrods... 2 of them are longer....
and now I dont know where to put longer and where shorter...
And I don't have a manual...
engine is 93 XLH
Casper 26th February 2007, 15:07 I don't have my FM here at work with me, but from the famous James Taylor notes, the pushrods with the three pink stripes are the exhaust (go on the outside), and the single brown-striped rods are the intake (go on the inside). Other conversion docs have confirmed this pattern. Hopefully they were using the markings on the '93 engines; I know for sure that they were in '97.
Lajmizz 26th February 2007, 15:57 no marking on mine :( or maybe I should take a closer look...
Casper 26th February 2007, 16:06 No, you'd see them if they were there. They're pretty prominent. In this case, go with length. The exhaust pushrods (outside ones) are a tad longer.
Lajmizz 26th February 2007, 17:55 Great :) thank you....
SCAGNETTI 27th February 2007, 03:23 Your Front Cylinder Intake Is The Shortest, Your Rear Cylinder Intake Is Just Bit Longer Than That , Your Front Cylinder Exhaust Is Longer Than Rear Intake And Finally Your Rear Cylinder Exhaust Is The Longest. Hope That This Isn't Too Confusing. Just Think Of It In Numbers , Fr. Intk 1 , Rear Intk 2 , Fr. Exh 3 , Rear Exh. 4 . 1 As Being The Shortest.

You have no business that far into your bike without a manual....
If you DID, you would have marked them as they came out...
Kudos to you for doing your own work, but one aw-sheat wipes away all previous atta boys, as we all know.....
I hope the advice given is correct......I can't verify it myself....(never had to) :D

don't judge others by your own ineptitude chucky.....
he has as much business doing what he wants as you...
Casper is correct ... the exhausts (3 pink ) are slightly longer than the intakes (1 brown)... there's not much in it and it's an easy thing to miss...
Casper 27th February 2007, 03:54 Based purely on the '97 specs, the intake is definitely the shorter set (10.746") and the exhaust is the longer set (10.800"); however, according to the specs, there is no difference between front and rear cylinder rods.
Cantolina is right: you really should get a manual before you get any further. Disassembly's easy enough; reassembly is another matter!
Chuck, if you get a chance, would you verify the equal lengths between each intake rod and each exhaust rod with the insider parts list? The PN's for the rods are 17904-89 for exhaust and 17897-89 for intake (only one PN is listed for each, which is why I think they're equal length).

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing for a fool to weild.....
bye chucky......
cjburr 28th February 2007, 11:44 If it helps, the pushrods I got from NRHS are just 2 sizes, the ones for the intake are the same length and the ones for the exhaust are the same length. The longer ones go on the exhaust.
Horse 7th March 2007, 12:41 The pushrods are two sizes, the intake is .051" shorter than the exhaust. While it's in your own best interest not to mix the front and rear up, it's a matter of wear pattern, not different lengths.

Manual, shmanual. We don't need no stinkin manual!
Doesn't everyone wish there was room on their Sporty to carry the factory manual along with their toolkit? Unless of course you have a new Sporty that comes with towing.
teeheehee:D :D :D
