hey everyone, i have 2002 1200 sporty and today i was taking off from a stop sign and it sounded like there was a slip/clunk in the primary. almost like the clutch slipped. this happens quite a few times and i was just wondering what you all think it might be?. sometimes it does it and sometimes it dont

You might be taking off at too low of an RPM and lugging the motor a bit.

I have a '94 with a newer Buell tranny in it and it does this sometimes too. I think there's a problem with the shift barrell.

You might want to check the adjustment of your primary chain...

anybody have any idea whats wrong with my bike? i double checked the primary drive and the clutch adjustments today and they are correct but still when im in first gear going slow then go to give it gas it feels like something slips(because it clunks loud from the lower left side) and its really aggravating, but im alittle low on cash to take it to a dealer and pay them $60 an hour to diagnose something.

What's your chain adjusted to? It should be between 1/4" and 3/8" hot and 3/8" and 1/2" cold. I've found that the less the play, the quieter it is.

I have had the same problem a time or two.
I pulled a brain fart and started off in 2nd at a light. I heard the same clunk. The next day I was cruising at 60 in 5th and hit the throttle hard to pass and heard the same thing. Made me think the tranny or the sprockets on the primary chain had a problem. Perhaps I should have been in 4th, but it still makes me want to have it checked out.
Sorry I have no solutions.

Hello,
I think I have the same problem and it started today. This is not any normal sound since I never experience it before in the 5 years I owned the bike. The clutch started to have some stiction yesterday and today there was a lot of chattering when engaging 1st to 2nd gear at low speeds and I have about 21,000 miles on my 01 Sportster. Reading my 01 service manual it say the clutch problem may be the friction or steel plates worn, warped or dragging.
I didn't want to think about the cost for a new clutch yet so I checked and adjusted my clutch first and it didn't help.
Anyone have any suggestions and what Harley charges for clutch work?
Thanks,
Eric
