Gentlemen & Ladies,

This thread was orignally labeled oily rear end. Couple of new findings, it seems that the seal has went out on the engine allowing oil into the primary which caused it to come out the transmission overflow.

Let the bike set about a week since I last drove it and the oil was low in the tank which didn't surprise me.

The question is how common is it for the engine seal on the primary side of the motor to go out. After the bike set for about a week it looks like some of the engine oil has made it way back into the primary. I have been a mechanic for several years but not on HD's. I've never seen a seal just go to leaking while the bike has been setting for about a month. When I cranked it up today and watched the oil tank I could see the oil pumping back into the tank and I ran it about 5 minutes (I would think that this is long enough to pump the oil from the crankcase back into the resvouir, it seemed like the oil was inconsistant in it's flow like it had pumped the crankcase dry then it picked back up again) is it? Also if the crankcase is full of oil is there a chance of blowing the seal due to high crankcase pressure?

Just asking some dumb questions and thinking outloud, trying to figure out what the hell happened. Prior to this instance the bike ran fine with no oil leaks except for hopping out of third gear (another thread).

Thanks in advance
Charlie
