I didn't get a owner's manual with my 02 XL1200S when I bought it so I was wondering if someone can give me an idea about what sort of preventative maintenance I should be doing and when. Any help at all will be appreciated. Thanks.

our non rubber mounted bikes get oil changed every 2500 miles plus lube cables check belt and primary chain. im sure more stuff but these bikes are pretty simple with few hidden parts. i just periodically check things as i go and dont really concentrate on doing everything all at once. (scheduled maint)

Some of those PMs might need instructions if you're going to do it yourself. The instructions aren't in the owners manual, they are in the service manual as is the schedule. If you ever plan on buying a manual, better to buy a service manual because it'll teach you far more about your bike. It's even good to have if you let the dealer do all the work, just so you have an idea what he's charging you for.
