Granted, this is a "performance only" answer. Reality says that we all have our preferred pipes, and for many, those are straights. You could also look at getting some head work done. The 883 heads are pretty restrictive, so there is a lot that can be done to them. One of our sponsors, NRHS, is big on head work; you might want to drop Aaron or Dan a note. Of course, one of the big questions is what do you mean by 'performance'? Are you looking for more torque or horsepower? If you're looking for more top end power, you could change out to 1200 pulleys to reduce the revs at higher speeds. The 883 is already geared for low end as it is, so there's not a lot of low-budget stuff you could do there. Is there any reason in particular that you want to avoid the 883/1200 swap? I know there is one thread around here from a member who was recently (i.e. in the past day or two) looking to swap their top end from a 1200 to an 883. Granted, the user was in the UK so shipping might cost a few, but overall, it would be a cheap conversion. If it's only cost holding you back from a 1200 swap, this could be a good alternative. ozark 9th March 2007, 05:53 i already have striaght pipes k&n air filter and jetted the carb what else can i do to get more performance without doing the 883 to 1200 conv I think you have done all the cheap stuff. Probably the best Horsepower/dollar improvement from here is a 1200 kit. Major difference without sacrificing reliability. Ozark yep... there's no replacement for displacement and compression:smoke Ww Shu 9th March 2007, 06:03 Absolutely the best bang for the buck is the 883/1200 conversion. Lots of ways you can do this and the price varies as much as the various ways. The actual work is relativly easy and there are several very detailed step by step "how tos" on this forum. Just curious why you would prefer to avoid the conversion? As an 883, you could gain OVERALL power by going to a set of CycleShack or Screamin Eagle I slipons. Once you have done the stage 1 (aircleaner, pipes and rejet) there isn't much else you can do in increase the overall power other than the 1200 conversion, turbo, supercharger or nitrous. Rob Henderson 9th March 2007, 06:07 Ditch the drag pipes...... They be crap unless you plan on WOT all the time... roadster 9th March 2007, 10:07 It's a low-tech motor. Can't spin it very fast. Can't run more than about 10/1 CR. Going 1200 is THE WAY. The motor was designed to be a 1200. It's roughly a 1HP per cubic inch affair in long life street tune. A bit more if you go nuts and break the bank. So,a basic 1200 is gonna be around 70HP and an 883 will go 50 or so. That's about it. Appropriate for the level of technology-air cooled, two valves and under square. By comparison a high tech 4 cyl 600 will make almost 3HP per inch, stock. Many ,many little parts moving very, very fast! The XL is more fun in most situations. Most who have bored their 883 to 1200 never look back. Chip 29th March 2007, 03:58 If your looking for more torque, try some power cones with the straight pipes Rascal 29th March 2007, 04:07 Guys are right about the drag pipes, my bike performed better with the SE II's, but I wanted loud. Now that I've had loud a while, pissed off my neighbors, and every police officer in town knows me....sure glad I kept my SE II's. :) TrueThumpHD1250 29th March 2007, 08:41 Drag pips are horrible! get a 2-1 and ....wait a minute, BORE YOUR CYLINDERS FOR $500 which included all parts and gaskets from NRHS, totally the only logical thing you should do if you want more HP and TQ |
