View Full Version : Intake Seals: Grease, Or Not?

I've heard some people say that when you put in new head to manifold seals, or a new carb seal ring (manifold to carb), you should lubricate them with lithium grease. Others say not: you should install them completely dry.
What do you all think?

Manual only calls for lub between the carb to manifold gasket with dish detergent. I've never read in the manual to use anything on the manifold to head seals.
I've always put mine together "dry" and never had an issue.

Thanks Jimbo. :)

Oh yes, and thanks to the others that voted too. :)
I used the dishwash detergent on the carb to manifold...for lubing purposes ;)
My 1992 FSM states on page 4-17 :
"..The fit between the carburator and the seal ring is tight. For ease of installation, it is recommended that the mating surfaces, carburator body, and seal ring be lubricated with liquid dish soap or tire mounting lube prior to assembly.."
The manifold to heads : I did 'm dry.
Had no issues (so far).

I've always stuck them in there dry. I'm about to try the James blue silicon seals - less chance of hardening.
And regular grease or vaseline :wonderlan on the carb-to-manifold seal (very tight with an HSR42!) :p

Yeah, just jam it in there - you can't even tickle a Mikuni first like you could with the old Amals. :laugh

I use ArmorAll. I want them slip and slide as they are being tightened. Then sit in place and don't degrade. I'm no expert but it's worked for me.
When I did my conversion I used liquid dish soap
on the carb seal ring to manifold. The intake
manifold seals went on dry.
