I could come down from The Big Island if it's May, June, or August/Sept.
I'm already commited to 1-4 July wkend.
I'll be off touring The Rockies with The Wahf all of July. I don't work
in the summer. I'm too old and life's too short. :D

Ride to Port Angeles and "Hog the Ridge." :)

trosga1
27th March 2007, 04:07
That would be a great ride. Those on the east side of the sound we could meet up somewhere near the Narrows bridge (breakfast maybe) and then ride up 16 to Bremerton, and then over the hood canal bridge and head on West.

Hood Canal loop is a nice 115 mile run on a sunny day.

27th March 2007, 04:43
Duane, you figuring that the run would turn around at Port Angeles? Another option would be Port Townsend, and then a ferry ride over to Whidbey, down to Clinton and over to mukilteo for a high speed run down I-5 (heck, do that and we could have a bbq at my place south of everett)

I'd be totally up for Hurricane Ridge. I've driven it a few times, even bicycled it
(twice!) but, believe it or not, I've yet to ride up and down on my Sportster.
I can catch the early COHO and do it as a daytrip from my place, etc.
There may still be winter debris on the corners and in the tunnels well into June.
Otherwise, should be a great ride.

I've been up and down it 5 times on my bicycle. Most people look at you like you are crazy. Had one guy in a motorhome offer me a beer. Currently, 28 degrees at Hurricane Ridge.

I'm just saying the Hood Canal loop with no excursions is 115 miles (highways 101/and 303). Add in however far to and from others have to go, or a secondary destination like Port Angeles/Port Towsend/Fort Warden.
I live in Bremerton so I do this basic loop fairly often for fresh air and scenery. In mid-summer (weekends) it can be a fight with the dozens of motorhomes/boaters that refuse to pull over and let traffic by. I don't know how many people are up to riding 10-12 hours in the saddle, like for a North Cascades or White Pass-Mt. St. Helens loop or Olympic Peninsula loop. For anyone who has not ridden the backside of Mt. St. Helens down to the gorge through Carson and/or into the Windy Ridge monument, there are curves galore where only 45 mph or less, can have you leaned way over. About a 12-16 hour loop for me in Bremerton, depending on breaks and sidestops.

Good point on the added distance for everyone to get together. maybe the hood canal would be the best first trip for folks. it would make for a full day of riding with the travel time from wherever to the meeting/departure point. What do other folks think? Anyone want to toss out some dates that might work for this?

I'm up here in Port Angeles. What do you all think about this? Pick a destination, meet somewhere centrally located on Saturday morning, make the run, spend the night(motels or camp)then ride back and split up for our respective homes? cover more distance and make a weekend out of it?

Duane Wood

Interesting that two of you rode their bicycles up Hurricane Ridge. I've thought of it, but not sure how good I'd do at the constant climbing. What sweet relief to come back down! I have done the Iron Horse from North Bend to Hyak and back.

The Eastside of the mountains also poses travel issues for many folks, due to the to and from distance. I've done virtually all the possible loops from Bremerton and back in one day on my other bikes, but it is a long haul with few and short breaks. Coming back west on Sunday afternoon on Highway 2 or I-90 is PURE GUARANTEED MISERY! I do know some of the campgrounds along the Columbia are kept very tidy. Rides up to Coulee Dam and taking the tour, Mary Hill Museum and Stonehenge memorial - too many options to list.

Still have the family owned Japanese restaraunt on the main drag? Only ate there twice but thought it was first class.
You mean like perhaps Port Angeles in the morning, then Hurricane Ridge and possibly hook around Cresent Lake in afternoon for a stop and camp around Forks or Clalock, etc? Finish the loop the following day and head home? Anyone running late for morning PA hookup could catch us on the way back down from Hurricane Ridge, through PA to Crescent Lake.

The first few miles are the steepest until you get to Heart of the Hills. The rest is just a long slog. Gotta watch out for deer on the fast ride down. It's been a while since I rode it. Weather conditions (http://www.nwac.us/products/OSOHUR)

I could take part of Saturday and join you at least out to the lake. We could stop at Granny's Cafe east of Lake Sutherland for coffee.

I like this idea. It allows folks to start on their own and meet up late morning in PA, and not feel rushed to all meet at one central spot, only to go to another. I can see making a weekend trip of it and there are lot's of places over on the peninsula I've never been to. :tour

The north end of the Peninsula (Claloch, etc.) has some rugged ocean front like Oregon. Forks is a bit inland from the ocean and in midsummer sometimes air pockets form and it can get blistering hot 100+ on rare days. The Hoh River valley takes you up into middle of the rain forest, and there is more moss than on a tropical movie set. Neah Bay gets you out as far as you can go on the Pacific coast of the continental U.S. If you hike in past Lake Ozette to the ocean, there is a whole herd of deer with heavy albino DNA - odd.

Another interesting place to visit between Port Angeles and Lake Crescent is Salt Creek recreation area. WWII bunkers and their long gone 16" guns.

Well, if ya got a low enough granny gear (mine's an 18"!) it's just a matter of soldiering on until it levels off at the top. Stop to rest and admire the view whenever you feel like it. That is unless you want to pretend you're Lance Armstrong on L'Alp du Wheeze... :laugh then just upshift and stand up on the pedals!
The rangerette at the park gate had LED taillights she was loaning to cyclists who didn't have them. "What's this for?" I asked. "The tunnels." she answered.
I did it on a sunny day. I had lunch at the summit cafe, then started back down.
On the descent I was tucked in and bombing along at 50 mph :tour when I came to the first tunnel. I had my sunglasses held on by one of those nerd straps to keep them from sliding down my nose, but I'd forgotten how dark it was in there. As soon as I entered that tunnel it was like I'd suddenly gone blind.
I'd seen potholes and junk strewn around in there on the way up, but going 50 in the dark is a thrill you'd want to avoid. I took one hand off the bars, reached up, and drrraaaaaagged those dark goggles down over my nose and held them in my teeth against the tension of that nerd strap. Of course my eyes began to water so much that once more I couldn't see. Just about then I came out the other end and pulled off to the side to recover. I'm sure my heart rate was higher in that tunnel on the way down than it was at any time on the climb up. :wonderlan

OK, guys, I'm off the back here regarding the proposed ride. Have we talked about possible dates yet?
As I said earlier, I'd be up for meeting in PA and doing a ride from there. Hurri Ridge'd be fun. I could take the Coho (ferry bet PA & Victoria) both ways or, alternately, ride over to Anacortez and catch that ferry the next day or something. The area around Decption Pass is pretty good riding. I'd have to check the schedules. I'm open to other ideas and could stay over for a couple nights instead of rushing back home on Sunday. My work schedule is flexible.
So when do you want to do this?

Now I know where you are talking about. Small place, Okasan, close to Baskin Robbins.

Another interesting place to visit between Port Angeles and Lake Crescent is Salt Creek recreation area. WWII bunkers and their long gone 16" guns.

I thought the triangle of death from Flagler, Casey, and Fort Worden (An Officer and a Gentleman) were the only outposts, but that makes sense to guard the entrance to the straight. Canada must have had one or two, big gun outposts too. I've seen the Salt Creek turnoff, but had no idea of it's historical value.

Duane Wood
5th April 2007, 07:09
It's spring here. I'd suggest a primary and backup date. Rain down low might be snow on the Ridge. And rain down low might be ugly instead of spring showers if a big front comes in. I usually have weekends off and have no clue what weekends I have to work until it's too late (Friday afternoons), so I'm game for about any dates convenient.

I'm up for just about anytime and agree with Duane that we have a backup date in case the weather looks like it's going down the tubes. The weekend of May 20th is the Snohomish Bike show so we might want to avoid that weekend and maybe move into June.

This weekend was an example of an all too common last minute weather bust for Washington. The weather at 6 am Friday predicted a decent Saturday, I rode the Hood Canal loop after work for a warm up, planning on a run to Eastern Washington, Saturday. The 10 pm news showed the incredible high pressure had already started to break down, and many of us woke up to rain.
Thanks for the tip ClineDesign.

If you are talking North Cascades, it probably won't be plowed free of snow until the end of May with the heavy snowpack we have.

Stevens will be open and dry any days it's dry now.

Cayuse on Mt. Rainer is predicted to be closed most, if not all this season, due to a huge collapse that needs lots of fill.

Windy Ridge at Mt. St. Helens won't be plowed until May (for tourists....).

The road(s) to Cougar/Carson should open about then, too.

The Skate Creek cut-off (Alder to Packwood) should be melting off about now.

I would like to go on several rides this summer, one would be taking a few days heading down 101 coast highway to Newport Beach, Lincoln City area in Oregon. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d173/y2keglide/memor.jpg Is that Lincoln City or Newport Beach area? I spent the night on a beach that looks just like that. I'm waiting for a set of tires to be delivered. Once they're on anytime is good for me. It would be nice to get some more bikes to join in.

No, it's way down on the South coast, somewhere between Gold Beach and Brookings I think.
It would be cool to get a few bikes together and putt the Oregon Coast.
Maybe meet up in Astoria so the Wa. riders like us could hook up with the Oregon guys from the Portland/Vancouver area and then head South.
I'm only 40 minutes from Portland but prefer riding hiway 4 from Longview,Wa. down the Wa. side of the Columbia river to the coast.
I know the Oregon Coast well,it has many side bars off 101 worth exploring but there isn't a bad route to be had.
Late July early August is the best bet for good weather but it's always a crap shoot.
If nothing else I'll try and post up here a few days before the next time I hit the coast and anyone who cares to join me is more than welcome.

For those folks in the puget sound area, why not do this run Saturday. Let's meet at 9:30 at the Sheri's Restuarant in Downtown Mill Creek (just south of Everett). We'll leave at 10:00 and head up Highway 9 to Everybody's Country Store just north of Acme, have lunch and then head back down (either back on Highway 9 or high speed down I-5): Here's a link to Everybody's: http://www.everybodys.com/index.html. For those who haven't been to Everybodys it's a neat store with a wide assortment of just about everything and they make great sandwiches. (directions to Sheri's below the image).

http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/500/Everybodys.jpg

Coming up SR 527 from Bothell, Sheri's is on the left just after the 164th ST SE intersection. Coming up I-5, get off at exit 183 (164ST SE/Mill Creek) and head east for about 1 1/2 miles. Turn left into the Albertsons shopping center just before SR 527 (or turn left on SR 527 if you miss the turn and take the next left).

That looks like a great place to make a run to. Too bad I already have Father's Day plans. The run to Acme is great though so count me in for this run again some time.

I recommend the following over using Hwy 9 south of Arlington:
In Snohomish, go north on Maple Ave. Continue on Maple noting that the name will change to Machias Rd. Take Machias Rd to where it ends at Hwy 92. Go right on Hwy 92 to Granite Falls. As you enter Granite Falls turn left onto Jordan Rd. Take Jordan Rd to where it ends at 228th St NE in Arlington. Go left on 228th St. You are now back at Hwy 9 so just hang a right and you're headed north. Both Machias Rd and Jordan Rd are very scenic back roads. These are worth the detour off of Hwy 9. Basically you are paralleling Hwy 9 east of it though these roads are not as straight. :) I very much enjoy riding on these.

Also, I found on the Internet that there is a loop we should take at Acme. I only just discovered this information so I haven't personally travelled this back road yet. In Acme, take a right onto Mosquito Lake Rd. Mosquito Lake Rd will loop around east of Van Zandt and will join with Hwy 542. Take a left onto Hwy 542 back to Hwy 9. Take a left on Hwy 9 back to Van Zandt (this is where the country store is).

Deimus, that works great. I always hate the traffic from Snohomish to Lake Stevens and tend to run up I-5 to Arlington and then cut over. So we'll see ya saturday then? greg

August would be better for me.

Cloudy and a 30% chance of rain tomorrow. If it is actively raining in the morning then I'm definitely not heading out. It's just not fun riding in mid 50s rain.

What are the thoughts of the rest of the folks that were thinking about it? I would like to ride with some XLForum members.

I read in the local newspaper that Bread and Roses coffee house and eatery in Port Townsend is sponsoring a vintage and classic motorcycle rally on Sunday, June 24, 3 p.m. at 230 Quincy St. Music provided by Lucius Clay. For more info call 360-379-3355.

Might be a good reason to tour the Olympic Peninsula.

If anyone is interested a few of us locals are planning a ride from Port Angeles, to Forks, WA on July 14th to watch drag racing. Nostalgia drags are scheduled to be run on the 14th and 15th.

We probably won't go if it rains... and it does rain in Forks... but only on the weekends...

You won't see much in the way of funny cars or top fuel dragsters but you'll see a bunch of fine looking cars and bikes.

Yeah, I'm thinking of going. Although I live on Vancouver Island, I'd just have to hop the Sidney, BC-Anacortes, WA ferry.
BTW-- I think the run goes out of Anacortes, not Bellingham?
I'll need to check the fy sched. I'd go over the day before and stay over.
If the weather is nice (?!?) I could stay in the area for several days.

I just got back yesterday from a "summer" :doh music camp at Fort Flagler near Port Townsend. Had a great time and learned lots of new stuff.
I rode my bike all the way from my home north of Nanaimo on the big island, crossing the puddle on SS Coho out of Victoria. It was bloody cold for "June"!
Somebody said it's the worst February we've had in years. But it's JUNE! :laugh
Then some other body said, "It's JUNuary." The ride home yesterday was much better. In fact, it was just about perfect. Ditto for today.

Anybody wants to ride up Hurry Cane Ridge, I could come over to Port Angeles and meet you. The ferry's thirty bucks each way...

Bike is long overdue for its 24,000 km service--over 27,000 on now.
I always change oil and filter at least every spring and fall, but there are a few areas I've been neglecting, so must do some maintenance before summer really hits (if it ever does :shhhh) and I'll be riding every day.
