Rule of thumb is to start with the simple solution first. I have dealt with pro audio gear all my life as well as motors on bikes and cars. The #1 rule is always...check cables first. If all your cables are snug and no frays or burn spots, odds are move to the next item in the chain. Most starters don't quit in one shit. They will make some noise or you will feel them getting a little weak when they kick the motor over. The cheap solution is to get yaself a battery for your tester and see what you have across both battery terminals....Start there and see what happens. Mine did the same thing in your case and it was the regulator taking a dump and draining the battery while I was riding. Hopped off to open shop....kachunk...kachunk....nothing when I kicked her back on. Sounds similar but, it could be something way different.

Just a thought.

Yep mine let me down a while back, I threatened to kick it over in the ditch and go buy me a Honda !

But then I turned the fuel back on ! :doh

And all was right in the world again !!:smoke :smoke

Had the same type of issue with my 95, turned out to be the ignition switch.

Batteries can go bad in an instant, even new ones.

I would check every thing from a to z in the charging system starting like already mentioned the cables and grounding wires. And another tipp just because the starter turns when it is out of the motor does not mean that the starter is good when the starter is out of the motor it has no load and when it is installed it has to turn the motor so there is a difference there. And when you test your battery dont be fooled because when a battery shows good voltage does not mean the battery is good you have to check the cranking Amps. And another good tipp is if it is the battery and you go to get a new one fork out the exta$ and get a gel battery they hold far longer than a normal battery and are worth the $.Good luck in finding your prob!!!!

Vibrations tend to loosen the battery connections over time and this can stop you dead. Check ALL the connections well - at the battery end and on the frame/engine case.

Cheers,
