so on a 99 883 with Screaming Eagle exhaust and S&S filter (does that count as a mod??) what kind of mileage can I expect. I am not used to not having a gas gauge..
also how much gas does the "reserve" count for?

man this bike sure has been fun so far. I need a better helmet though,, mine fits but I have a huge head and my current helmet hurts my ears after an hour or so. but thats a whole other post.

Kinda hard to answer. Depends on how the bike is tuned, your riding habits and other factors.

I think you should see anywhere from 35 - 50 MPG.

I track my mileage on an Excel spreadsheet I created and built in the formulas to I only need to enter the date, amount of gas bought, and miles driven.

I would not count on more then 10 - 20 miles on reserve and as soon as I hit reserve I find a gas station.

I have an '03 883C/1200. The tank is 3.3 galllons, with .3 gallon reserve. When stock, I got between 50 and 52 MPG. Since the 1200 conversion, it's dropped to around 48 to 50, mostly because it's hard to resist twisting the right grip.

I leave the trip OD on the display, and refuel at around 130 miles. Haven't run out yet.

Yeah, ESPECIALLY when you get mileage and speed mixed up... :doh

Honestly, these bikes SHOULD be tuned so they CAN get 50 mpG, however, even when so tuned, staying in the throttle a whole-lot can drop that mileage to 40 mpg in a heartbeat.

Yup, the odometer plus the petcock reserve setting is your fuel gauge.

I used to hit reserve in that 130 mile neighborhood on my old solidmount (and ironically that's about where we TEND to hit it on the rubbermount too). I once went 150 miles on my solidmount without hitting it (but I was freaked out by then and happy to find a gas station).

thansk guys! I just found out about the trip odomteter last night :doh
and I ride like a old man. after all it is my first bike. I did get on it pretty good on a straightaway yesterday... this has plenty o power for me for awhile I think!
I am really stoked that even 35 mpg I am used to about 10 in the lightning plus filling both tanks is close to $100 nowadays!!
I am getting more and more excited about this little ole Sporty everyday.
but there is two small downsides...
1. my Lightning feels slower than heck now
2. Looking at all of your guys pictures... man I wanna mod the Sporty now and havent had it a week yet!!
thanks again Willy

I wouldn't settle for 35 mpg on an 883, riding it like an old man, that should be 50 mpg territory.

Otherwise, cool and have fun!!!

I pretty much fit into the "old man" catagory of riding style myself. My 883's get in the 48-55 range in every day mixed riding.
