Okay, so the thread about "What's Next" really got me thinking. I know what I want to do next, but just like everybody else in here, that's limited severely by both time and money. So now, I want everybody to type out what they would want for thier dream Sportster Cafe Racer. Keep in mind that time and money is no object, but for some realm of reality we'll have a few guidelines:

-Lets try to use Sportster Frames, but they can be modified
-We should stick to XL Engines, but modified as you see fit
-Non-existant parts can be fabricated, but keep them realisitic (Something like a custom exhaust is allowed, but try to stay away from such ventures as DOHC Heads, as cool as they'd be)

I think that leaves things pretty wide open. So being this was my awsome idea, I'll go first:

DRIVETRAIN
Engine:
-NHRS Stage 3 heads with dual-plugs
-Stock Bore (1200 is just a "magic" number to me...) with 10.75:1 Compression
-Adjustable Pushrods
-Collapsable Pushrod Tubes
-"Eighty-Six" the Front Sproket Cover
-Mill the Cam Cover (something like an XR-750 look)
-EPFI Fuel Injection System-Seperate intake manifolds for front and rear cylinders, with Forcewinder air cleaners on each side of the motor(tell me that doesn't sound badass)
-Looking for around 120-130 hp

Transmission:
-Baker 6-speed
-convert to chain-drive
-Taller rear sprocket with brass gears (front and rear)

Primary:
-Stock chain-drive

CHASSIS
Suspension
-Ohlins Rear Shock Type 36-PRCLB
-Ohlins front Forks Type FG-470

Brakes(not sure of brands):
-Triple-disc setup with 6 piston calipers and floating rotors (must have brass hubs)

Wheels and Tires:
-13-spoke Alumium-alloy (polished) 19" front, 18" rear
-Metzeler ME 55A Tires

Controls:
-Rearset pegs and controls
-Clip-on handlebars with undergrip mirrors

BODYWORK
Custom Pieces:
-Chin Spoiler
-Storz "Road Racer" Solo Seat Pan
-High Exit 2:2 exhaust, 1 pipe on each side

Finishes:
-Eingine: Silver powdercaot with highlighted black cylinders (matte finsh)
-Frame: Graphite grey metallic powdercoat (high gloss)
-Paint: Pearlescent White (matte) with Candy Red offset racing stripes (gloss)

Obviously I'm forgetting a tone of stuff, like I'm sure the stock clutch aint gonna cut it, and of course there will be little billet aluminum pieces throughout.

Okay...So let's see what you can come up with!!!

To be completely honest, I happy with my new XL1200C the way she is and yes I do add things here and there. But I think HD did a great job this time. If anything, I'd like a 100hp engine and a better suspension. :D

I've always wanted an early Evo sporty crankcase fitted with a UL flathead topend. Finally put enough meat in the bottom end to find the upper limit of the much maligned flathead.

Since I've been doing alot of work on archaic 4 cam flatheads lately, I've been doin' some measuring.

So here's the list.

S&S custom cases with Flathead Power topend. 90 CI (3.575 x 4.500)
Auto advancing magneto
Kick start retrofit kit
Twin tunnel rammed Mk1.5 Amals (manifold by yours truly)
WL 45 tanks.
Ridged frame with suspended solo seat. (chopper style with a bit of "cush")
180 rear / 19" front
WL 45 springer front with shock, 34 degree total rake. double disks up front.
Custom controls high and tight so I can get a good lean angle

Bobbed out in "old school" style as far as the sheet metal goes.
(I'm not much on the looks, I'm an engine Man!)

Ever seen a 90 mph 45" WL? check out the December Iron Works.

Ditto what 'wickedsprint' said.

In my case, I would like all the parts needed for a fairly big tire on the back, a turbo kit, and a set of lower compression forged pistons that will handle the boost.

I must admit that I have a plan for three dream bikes (still waiting for that magical Powerball ticket though). What I want are:

1. A daily driver...probably a bobber of some sort.
2. A touring machine...something that my wife and I can go for days/weeks on and still be comfortable along with some protection from the elements (fairing, windshield, etc.)
3. An "Oh my God that thing has so much torque it's stupid!" type of bike for rolling short trips with the boys once in awhile.

But, since I can't have all three right now, this'll have to do...

xl1200r
2nd December 2004, 19:15
Wow! Lots of good ones in here. I have to second what Ole said, as one bike will not do it all for me. I would need the above mentioned bike for aggressive riding days, but I would also like an old Knucklehead Bobber for the nights on the town. And you can't go wrong with a RoadKing Custom with the matching hard leather TourPak for those long hauls.

G'day Hud

I'm doin up a UL 1200 at the moment for a customer

My mate Bruce (who has the workshop next door) has an RL that'll do a genuine 100MPH.

The cams in it look like house bricks :wonderlan

G'day Stevo

WR and WLDR flatties are pretty nice pieces, I wish I had some to work with. Those canted valves are for real and in the right direction on the "R" variations.

The 90 mph flatty started out as a standard G engine, servicar fodder. G topend with much modification. Still won't breathe with a WR, and we're running a magneto with static timing - which does take away your topend capability but keeps you from being launched over the handlebars while trying to kick it.

wouldn't we love to have a KR? Yes we would!

I'm green with envy over your UL project! :D

hudsonater, my ratty flatty would do 85mph in the 70s (fresh rebuild) and its a wla , about the only thing done to it was K pistons and the head dished a bit for clearance. now shes tyred (hasn't been rebuilt since 68) but will still get up to 75ish

I love those side valves (ya think?) and I seen a post on another forum that said flathead power usa will soon be making cases for the "U"s and will be using s&s internals (can you say 96 inches?) wouldn't a new "u" or"ul" be killer ? turque up the ass , I seen a chopped 80" ul bounce the front wheel off the ground "at idle" now thats some power

simple and dependable , I still feel that the flatty is the best motor that "HD" ever produced

oh ya , my dream bike , a 1929 brough superior ss100

Flathead 45,

Yeah, I've been watching the flathead power developement of the new UL cases with much anticipation. With better bearings and oiling, the flathead could definately reach new levels of performance. I'm saving my pennies for sure. Even though the components seem pricey, have you tried buying a UL "pig in the poke" off ebay lately - If ebay has one?

c'mon Flat Head Power! I'm rootin' for those immigrants!

Ironic, the 45 chopper has the same K piston arrangement with some additional decking of the G cylinders to gain all the popup we can get and keep the thickness of the "6" heads acceptable over the piston area. We squeezed about all the torque we can get out of it with a custom manifold. Little bugger will wick up from 15 mph to 90 in high gear. If you are careful and on level ground, it'll even take off in high gear. I was shocked.

I would still like to see the UL married to an Evo Sporty case, and save that bit of weight and rigidity in the process. That would make for one wheel hopping flatty!

Hud

3rd December 2004, 15:18
ya , I think a "ul" with modern metals and gaskets would be a dream come true , mate that to a baker 6 speed and "wow"

sure side valves (by design) don't breath as well as top breathers but they do have unreal torque , my wla can run up from almost a stand still in 3rd , and in 1and2 I could almost stay with an 80 shovel in a drag (ok thats like under 45 mph but still quick for a 60 year old)

hell remember the F heads ? with a ricy chip they could get over 100 ,in the 20's
who says old stuff can't run with the big dogs

wickedsprint
7th December 2004, 16:04
That is impressive, but only cause harleys have not gotten much faster..lol I also think the side valves are neat as hell.

flathead45
7th December 2004, 16:36
ya , from a visual stand point the fins on the heads and barrels curve and flow like a sculpture

did you know that more man hours went into making a set of heads for a flatty than the whole head for an old inline 6 chevy head?
and theres no moving parts

Would like to have an FXR with saddle bags and all to make longer rides on. I would kill for an XR-750 converted over for street use. A Sportster version of the Captain American chopper from Easy Rider would be cool as hell also. Not quite as long a set of forks but definetly the paint job and super long sissy bar.

Here's my dream machine. although (sorry) it's not H-D either. It's a 47 Vincent Black Shadow. I think I'd sell my house for one of these fabled British machines :laugh

BTW I found this on a Vincent web sight. It's about the Vincent Black Lightning, but I think all us Sporty riders can relate :tour

The Richard Thompson Song about a '52 Vincent Black Lightning clearly conveys the passionate feelings that are generated by beautiful women and powerful motorcycles. Those of us who have experienced both admire Richard's ability of communicating to others the stories of our wildest and deepest loves. Richard carries us away on a vivid adventure in song where others have been left standing at the curb. By the end of his story we feel our tourguide on this enjoyable journey has shown us that Red-haired women and Vincent Black Lightnings can be both our salvation and our ruin. What is powerful enough to carry us to the summit can also crash us to earth. His gift of the Black Lightning may not be a reward for what she gave him, but rather a realization that he must free himself from the steel bonds of both of his deepest loves. Only then can he escape the forces that gave him life and controlled his destiny.

For those of us who own a Vincent motorcycle, nothing else comes remotely close to the feelings of riding a quiet Dinosaur that suddenly transforms into a Fierce Dragon that bellows fire and takes flight..except a loving beautiful woman.

Richard understands.

Back in '69 when I was still ridin' my 1956 AJS Model 18S(scrambler) 500 single, I made friends with a fellow FSU student that had a Vincent Black Shadow. We had a blast riding together and often thought about starting a "vintage British" scooter club. Never happened. Phil Irving was a true genius.

My Sport takes me as close as I can get...
