Hi folks. I have been wondering due to certain parts I have been looking at (oil pressure gauges, etc). Is a '95' Sportster Evolution motor considered a big twin? I figured what a better place to ask other than this web site. I would feel stupid asking at a shop. Thanks in advance for your input. :o

Typically a Big Twin is considered the larger model HD's.... Dyna, Softtails, Road Kings, Electra Glides, etc. I assume this is because the engines are seperate from the trans, and the larger displacements. I could be wrong, and Lord knows if I am, we will find out shortly!!! :smoke

Denny, from what I know, you are correct. BT's are generally considered to be ones that have a separate engine and transmission.

That's right - a Sportster is NOT a big twin. Today's big twins are the twin cam motors. Before, the big twins were Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovelheads, and Evos (maybe that's where the confusion is - the Sportsters and big twins in the 80's and 90's were both called Evos).

Evo sportsters were 883 {54} 1200 {74}
Big twins were EVO 1340 {80}
If I'm wrong I'll be corrected here shortly

Thanks for the help. What would I be looking for when I order a oil PSI gauge? catalog to say sportster? will it go by PSI? I have seen some gauges that went by oil PSI only. Or maybe someone can recommend something? Thanks Again for the history lesson. :chop

The gauge itself will be the same, but the connection point is different. You
need to tee into the pressure sensor up by the oil filter. I believe that the
BTs have a place further back that you can tap into. Also some of the
mounts that attach to the rocker boxes may have the wrong spacing for a
Sporty. They make them for EVO Sportys, I think Arlen Ness has one, for
mega bucks. If you piece meal it get the lowest pressure range you can find.
Some go to 100psi, you want a 60psi but even that's high for what you will
ever see.
