View Full Version : Found out why my bike tries to kick me off!
davidcar 13th April 2007, 12:30 Heaps of TQ down low!!! 71TQ@2500RPM and that's before the tune-up!!! then it increases up to 82TQ@4000RPM. I have since done some extensive tuning and it now pulls just as hard up to about 4500RPM and it feels like I have picked up a further 10HP. I was running way too rich when I had this Dyno run, so when I get it back on a Dyno im hoping that I have picked up a few more TQ. I’m posting this because I have done all the work myself except for facing the heads & installing bigger valve seats & the five angle valve job and dam im proud with the result so far. Goes to show that a back yard grease monkey can make a sporty go like a shower of shit!!
cjburr 13th April 2007, 12:48 Get down with your bad self !!!
Congrats, did you take any pics of your porting ??
davidcar 13th April 2007, 12:58 Yep I have some pics I will put them in my gallary, because I am still working out how to put them in here. http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/500/thumbs/Combustion_Chamber_WinCE_.JPG

chrishajer 13th April 2007, 16:45 I'd be interested to see what the feeling of 10HP looks like on the dyno. I know you have issues with your dyno guy, but I think it would be interesting to see if your butt dyno is pessimistic or optimistic :)

Sundance 13th April 2007, 17:53 Nice job keep us posted.
Matt 13th April 2007, 18:17 Great to see folks posting about torque! Anybody can make lots of HP with a couple of handfulls of pistons and valves and a 15,000 rpm redline. Low torque is where the motorcycle's soul lives.
Matt
Jimbo999 13th April 2007, 18:31 I only say this because it happened to me last year.
I was doing some seat of the pants tuning myself and testing after each change with
short hops to see the results.
One of the carb adjustments seemed to really help performance after a
3 mile test so I went on a longer run. YES, it was pulling harder and doing
well but when I got home the engine was ticking as it cooled down and
I saw the temp was near 250*. Waaaaaaaaay too lean and making the
engine overheat.
Be careful......A/F ratio is there for the most efficient use
and saves your engine from what happened to me.
Mine survived that stupid mistake.....With your beast you may not be so lucky.

davidcar 13th April 2007, 21:06 Good point. I have been very careful, by doing adjustments and then test riding for about 10km/6miles, pulling the plugs and reading them to monitor timing and A/F and detonation so that I avoid exactly what your talking about.

Dakin Engineering 13th April 2007, 22:29 Keep working on that grip. You'll need it when you get the turbo.
100 lbs of torque in the basement gets your attention....
Sam
aussiesport 14th April 2007, 08:22 wehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa sumeone say TURBO!!!!!!!!
keep up the soupin mate :)
davidcar 14th April 2007, 11:02 Yep, Sam has given sound advice to me in the past regarding putting a Turbo on my bike, thanks to his help I have all the info that I require but unfortunately dollars are the issue, so im not sure when it will happen. It will cost about $2500 doing most of the fabrication myself and the wife would kill me if I spent that sought of money presently (she wants to go to Paris and see the frogs), so I have to put it on the back burner for quite a while.

ReddTigger 14th April 2007, 13:37 In a deep homer Simpson voice...

bigbluebowtie 17th April 2007, 17:21 My indy has an older Aerocharger kit that needs some TLC. He wants a $1000 for it. It comes complete with Mikuni 42, Turbo, exhaust, fuel pump, etc. It was on a big twin, but I am sure it could be made to fit a Sporty no problem. There was an older guy around the area that had it on his 1992 big twin for 10k miles (put it on in 1992 when he bought the bike) and just wants to get rid of the bike. Took off the kit and is selling it through my indy. I will make sure he has all the stuff still. I am pretty sure he does as the older guy was adamant about selling eveything as a kit. If you want I can ask him for you and take some pics.

davidcar 18th April 2007, 07:52 That’s a great price and I so appreciate the offer ($1000us works out to be about $1300au plus freight about $250au) but my wife will have my nuts on a platter if I spent even 1/4 of that at the moment. !!!!!ING FEMALES JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND AN OPPORTUNITY p.s yes I could make that set-up work, which makes my situation even more upsetting

bigbluebowtie 23rd April 2007, 22:57 Keep it in mind. He has had it for sale for about two years now, no bites, except for me. Wife said just turn it into a 1200 and fuhgeddaboutit. Oh well, got my 1200. If he sells it, I will let you know...otherwise he still has it.
superwarden 23rd April 2007, 23:06 Nice work, I wonder though, how does a shower of s#$t flow??
davidcar 24th April 2007, 02:52 I like the way you think. Goes like a “shower of shit” - if someone was literally throwing their shit at you (shower of shit), you would move really !!!!!ing quick to get out of the way.

davidcar 27th April 2007, 04:11 Ok I had the second Dyno today and picked up a few extra TQ & HP. After the second pull on the Dyno, I removed the shim from the needle and turned the primary screw out ˝ turn, this got the A/F staying between 12.8:1 & 14.2:1 I might be able to pick up a few more HP high up in the RPM range, but I seldom go over 5500RPM and the way it is set-up the A/F looks OK also I would have to find a main jet that is between a 185 & 190. TQ and HP are now TQ 84 & HP 81
chrishajer 27th April 2007, 04:15 What was your HP initially? I know you said your torque was 82, and you're now at 84, so you picked up a couple there. Did you pick up the 10HP? Enquiring minds want to know.
--Chris
davidcar 27th April 2007, 06:09 No I did not pick up an extra 10HP (bugger), But Im happy with the end results. I gained 2HP. The HP curve is much steeper than it was. I have more HP from about 3000RPM up to 4500RPM and about the same there onwards as before, but only gained an extra 2HP at the top. I think that is why it feels like I have gained about 10HP extra.

davidcar 27th April 2007, 06:10 Hey Chris is there such a thing as a 187 main jet??
chrishajer 27th April 2007, 18:56 Not for a CV (not that I know of anyway.) There are 187.5 jets for the HSR Mikunis. I doubt it's necessary though: err on the rich side and it will run just a little better on those cool evenings.
According to this PDF, Keihin doesn't sell anything between 185 and 190. Aftermarket might ...

It's always more satisfying when you do as much of the work as possible yourself.
