Any chance of designing the perfect saddlebags? I would like box type lids to keep rain out and long straps to secure items on top of the bag.(tent, sleeping bag)

It is very interesting that you mention this. I was on the phone with my saddlebag supplier discussing a prototype compact saddlebag they are going to produce for me. The aproach I am taking is to take existing designs that are popular and making changes to improve them.

These are the requirements I have so far:

Retails for under $100
Materials: Thick stiff leather.
Quick release openers on the straps
Easily removable from the bike
Adjustable yoke
Fits Sportsters & Dynas requiring no modifications to the motorcycle.

I am getting ready to order a small production run of three styles with these features that may arrive near the end of June. Photos are attached.

I am very interested in designing a new set of saddlebags. If the forum members are interested I will be happy to set up a poll and get their input. If it looks like the new saddlebags will sell I'll have a production run set up.

I have the larger bags for the sporty with the longer straps. The straps have come in handy on a few rides. You can also check this thread:http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=52052. It has several different bags options with pluses and minuses.

Not going to work with a sporty. Rear signals are too close to the fender to get a decent sized bag without moving them.

I appreciate the link to the saddlebags discusions. I'll check it out.

It's always a trade off. The compact saddlebags are very popular with my customers because they can toss them on in a few minutes and ride with no modifications to their bike. I've sold hundreds. They work fine.

The longer bags 14" or more sometimes bother the passengers so a signal relocation is a good option. Or if your bike is set up like the Iron head in onadraw's photo with no signal lights you can run either style of saddlebag.

Chances are I will start with a compact saddlebag about 10" long.

I have these saddlebags. They are throw-overs but can be used with ghost brackets. Big bags, but they do not require relocating the turn signals. The straps loop underneath the bags and over the top as well so you can set them at the longest notch and use them to hold something down on top of the bag. If your sleeping bag is too big for that, the tops of the bags also have hooks to attach bungy cords.

Can you take a picture from the rear so I can see how wide they are?

Boss Bags for the sporty are made by Leather Pros... LP and BB are owned by brothers in Hortonville, WI. The real choice that you have to make is which mounting system do you like better... I chose LP's.

Of course IMHO,

PS. You can get significant discounts on the bags if you look hard enough.

To the mods, we should move this thread to the luggage section.

I'm working on it!

I just received my first shipment of some new saddlebags I had built to my specifications:

Compact size
All Leather
Quick release straps
removable
Long straps to secure a small jacket or whatever on top.
I am offering them as a group buy at the wholesale price for Forum members.
I'll post a link as soon as I figure out how to set up a group buy.

Hi,
I set up the group buy. I listed the XL Forum saddlebags in a dusty corner of my Yahoo store hopefully the Forum members will get their share before someone else finds them.
Here is the link to the plain compact slant:
