I just installed an S&S air cleaner on my 03 1200 c, when I let the bike idle for 2-3 minutes it shot the oil dipstick out like a champagne cork! I cleaned the dipstick and the oil tank edges and tried it again, but it did it again. I put the old dipstick back on ( I had bought a new one with the temp. gauge on it) and it did it again! I must have installed the air cleaner on wrong. Does anyone have an S&S on their sportys? Help! I feel like Im the dipstick!l

Sounds like the engine aint breathing anymore.
Ya know that little filter that came with the air filter kit? That's supposed to be for the crankcase breather. Vent the heads out into that. I need pics to say anymore.

Sounds like you plugged the breather holes in the heads with solid bolts.:doh

If the breather is not working you can do serious damage, you need to figure out what you did wrong on the install.

Stupid question from a total noob, first bike & no real mechanical knowledge - (I've ordered an owners manual but don't have it yet.)
What is the correct oil level operating range on the dipstick for an '03 883? I just got the bike from a non HD dealer and the first time I took out the stick the oil was so high it actually dribbled out of the tank. That seems high and don't want to blow a gasket or something. The dipstick isn't stock because it has a dealer logo on it but there is one mark about 1/2" from the tip and a second about the same distance down from the rubber gasket at the top.

The marks sound about right. It is probably the right dip stick. The dealers all have their own stickers they put on dipsticks.

Check the level when the bike is on the side stand, above the low mark when cold, and about halfway between when hot. To the high mark when hot is ok, but some bikes use oil when they are run that high
