I think you can attach the signal wire to the primary winding on the coil, and ground the ground wire (duh:p ), there probably is a hot wire for the light that you can hook up to a hot when key is on wire somewhere. If you are using a Dyna ignition, there is a dedicated tach signal wire that you can run to the tach. I guess it all depends on what tach you are going to install though, but I bet that should cover most tachs. there is also a tach signal wire in the handlebar riser cover on Customs.
hope this helps

I've got the 99 883 too, did a tach last year, let me get a cup of joe, and pull out the binder with the instructions...

So basically, the speedo has 3 wires. Cavity 1 on the block connector is Orange/White, Cavity 2 is White/Green, Cavity 12 is Black(Ground). The Tach likewise has 3 wires. Orange/White lead goes to Cavity 6, Pink goes to Cavity 7, and Black gets spliced to Speedo Black, "At a convenient place" between the speedo and the block connector. Instructions say to clip the wire, and using a butt connector, slip the tach and speedo grounds in one side, and the black to the connector in the other. It has lots of other info about taking apart the tank, bars, deutsch pin connectors and other crap, let me know if you have more questions...if I had a scanner at home, i'd shoot it all out to ya, but, no dice...Good Luck

The rest of the wires are black and go to the idiot lights...

AFAIK, every FSM (even the Clymer) has an included wiring diagram. ;)

On my 96 the big Dutch connector behind the headlight had a pink wire on the side coming from the bike side of the connector and nothing on the speedo side. Turns out that's the signal for the tach, just connect the signal wire to it, give it a switched hot, then ground and you're done.
