View Full Version : CV Carb, Screamin' Eagle A/C
tprJJ49707 25th April 2007, 14:39 I mounted a '98 40mm CV on my ironhead & attempted to install screamin' eagle backing plate, plate is ebay part, black anodized aluminum oval.
Plate is flat, carb top and related casting sticks out/not flush with the venturi, a/c backing plate will not sit flush. There is a carb gasket on plate so it it doesn't appear that I am missing a spacer, any ideas?
I could relieve plate with dremmel, but thought I'd ask questions first.
Thanks
jj
AZbiker 25th April 2007, 20:39 The eBayer that sold that to you sold it without the spacer. Definitely NOT an A+ ebayer! :D
Can you make one? OD really doesn't matter, just ID (same as backing plate) and placement of holes for the 3 bolts that attach a/c plate to carb, and one air bleed hole. If you have a drill press, you could use your backing plate as a template after you've cut the big ID hole in the middle--just clamp the new spacer to the plate and drill thru the existing holes. FWIW, I'm not an expert fabricator or machinist. :doh
The spacer is a little thinner than the backing plate, but as long as the stack of venturi, plate, carb gasket, spacer, carb gasket is thin enough to allow the bolts to grab a decent amount of threads in the carb body you'll be fine. And yes, I know I said carb gasket twice--I don't think there's any other way to seal the space between the spacer and the backing plate.
Good luck!
I have no idea if that spacer has an H-D part number--mine was an XL-List special. :D
tprJJ49707 25th April 2007, 21:28 Thanks. It was sold as is, cheap (like me) just the panel. Since I was going
to bastardize it for an ironhead anyway I wasn't caught up in it too much. Had to fill the breather holes, which they hadn't thought of from 1957-1985.
I may have to go to stealership & tell them "get me this part! I don't need your wisdom, just the part!" otherwise I'll get the lecture about not fitting an '85, etc., etc.
SportyJoe 25th April 2007, 21:38 I just bought a screaming eagle high flow filter kit from someone on ebay also... my kit is for a later modle bike, has the Kevlar back plate... not flat aluminum.. BUT I got a spacer with it that dosen't seem to belong... I believe It is a spacer for an older set up, It is about a quarter inch thick and round has the three holes for mounting, and one for a vent? (same as the carb) Its deffinately part of the kit, but not for my bike... Its not on the instruction sheet either... could this be the part you are needing? let me know, Ill send you a pic of it when I get home, or Ill attach it to my next post

I think that's it!! :banana :clap
Post pics and I will be glad to confirm.
I also filled the breather holes on my SE backplate--I am running an external breather. I used JB weld. UGLY, but it works. :D
tprJJ49707 26th April 2007, 18:33 Sporty Joe-that sounds like the part I am seeking or a part that will work...
I am definitely interested. Looked up part at dealership today, part number 27041-90...obsolete, checked ebay, one pictured looks like half of one pictured at dealer ( 1/2 of a cheerio as opposed to whole cheerio) so I passed on it.
myrl883 26th April 2007, 19:07 AZbiker has the "stack" of parts listed correctly. On mine, the spacer is the same thickness as the backplate, and shaped exactly the same as the gaskets.
jeff1873 26th April 2007, 22:38 The correct spacer I'm sure is obsolete seeing how the S.E. air cleaner is obsolete but I went out and looked at my bike looks like all you should need to cure your problem is 3 or 4 stock air cleaner gaskets stacked on top of each other, they're self adhesive so all you have to do is stick them together, just don't over tight the screws and use some loctite.
SportyJoe 27th April 2007, 15:31 H ere is the picture of the spacer that I have. Its the round one in the middle of the Back Plate. I should be putting my AC Kit on this weekend (if I dont end up riding all weekend) but Im pretty sure I won't need/be using it, so if it is the part you need, (although from the few posts before this one, it kinda sounds like you are looking for something different) Id be glad to let you have it. Just take a look at the attachment and let me know if thats it.
tprJJ49707 27th April 2007, 18:00 I don't see how that part levels the carb surface on back side, but if it does, it will work.
SportyJoe 27th April 2007, 18:16 no I don't think it will do anything for the back side of the back plate.. but one of the previous reply's had a good Idea...stacking the standard gasket ( if it's the same as the new ones... which it sould be...the holes on the carbs are the same I believe...), Harley can still get them.. (different part number though) ( I can get the current part number, but wont be able to post it until I get home tonight) they cost around $2-3.00 (im picking one up this weekend) I guess I mis-uderstood the original problem... the spacer I have will allow the partially threaded allen screws that attach the back plate to the carb to seat in propperly... but wont do anything for spacing the back plate away from the carb... you may need to get a mounting kit.
tprJJ49707 27th April 2007, 21:01 I appreciate your offer though, that's what counts.

Nope, that's the venturi.
The part the OP needs is on the other side and is a flat disc with one big hole and four small ones.

I picked up a used air cleaner set up and the venturi doesn't fit tight against the backing plate. The hole for one of the screws is broken out and slips past the head of the screw. Will this affect the way it runs? Is a replacement available?

From an airflow standpoint, it's not good, but how bad it is, I dunno. I don't know what the part # is, but your local dealer should be able to tell you. I'm not sure if it's an obsolete part or not. Hopefully not. :D
