View Full Version : Oil Vent Hose leaking

I have a 2000 1200c that had a recall on the trans vent hose that runs behind the oil tank for being too short. The guy I bought the bike never fixed it upon recall, so whenever I'd ride for more than an hour and park my bike, it always leaked oil afterwards (just a small amount - 2 quarters worth). I took it in, they found the recall problem, and replaced the hose with a longer one that ran behind the oil tank and up under the seat. I rode Saturday for more than an hour, came home, parked it, and when I went back to see if it had leaked, it had leaked all over the place - about 10 times the amount it had before it was "fixed." Anyone have any insight on this problem? Thanks in advance.

It sounds like maybe they didn't tighten the hose clamp(s) when they "fixed" it. I'd check that first. Then I'd check the fluid level in the primary.

This should help you cure your problem. The 2000 has a
recall bulletin, something about the hose being to low and
they show you how to reroute it. Sounds like the previous
owner didn't fix the problem. Hope this helps.:yikes

Thanks! That could be helpful. I'll have David check and see if the mech shop re-routed it properly. They knew about the recall, and thought they had fixed it. They weren't happy to hear from me. They thought they had me all fixed up. :D

make sure that there are no dips or sags in the hose, if there are, it will act like a trap and the oil will puddle up in the hose. mines a 95 and had the same problem, i ran the hose up high then came back down by the battery. was a real pain to do, but it worked

Thank you both so much! Your comments and suggestions were dead on, and thanks to you we found the problem that the mech even missed. The part about the sags and dips is what was wrong. The mech understood the recall to be that the hose had to be raised, but he was thinking the end of the hose. There was a large dip at the beginning of the hose right after the hose leaves the primary - it dips down and then back up. It was that way from the factory, and when the mech fixed it, he just raised the end; he didn't start at the bottom and make sure everything was raised. Your insight was a huge help. Thanks!!!

Bump... Hate to be digging up bones, but I've got a q...

Is there another link to this tsb that can be found? I'm not having any luck and I want to make sure this has been routed properly on my new to me bike. I've been cleaning it up and took a few pics that I'll upload later. Still waiting on my service and owners manual to come in. Been a week and guy at Harley said that they have the printing of these subcontracted out and it takes a while to get in. I want to sort my issues out before I post pics and confirm how goofy I really am. My primary vent hose is up under the seat pointing skyward and it revaled itself to me today after I had cleaned the bike and headed out for a day of riding through the Cherokee national forest. Gee whiz, after changing my fluids, I don't know if it was a smart idea to remove the seat while I cleaned the motorcycle and hosed it all off. Guess I'll be cleaning it again and sorting this out. Anyways, just looking to find out the proper routing for the vent from the primary. Thanks!

found the link myself after digging a little. Here's one that works for anyone else who might have a scoot with this tsb neglected.

Kudos to you for finding and posting that link! I hope this finally takes care of the issue I've been having for quite some time.
