This is probably a really stupid question, but I'm technically challenged to say the least....

I have some new footpegs I'd like to swap out on my XL. It looks like the stock ones are held on my some sort of semi-circular ring with a hole on each end. How do I get the ring off? Better yet - does anyone have a link to some instructions? Am I going to need a special tool? Thanks!

they are kinda like a snap ring....you dont need any special tools to get them off, it's prolly a lot easier with a special tool but i did my pegs and a few friends pegs w/o any tools...just remember to put them back on you dont need to lose a peg going down the road

Those are snap rings. Best to use snap ring plyers to remove them. It saves bending them out of shape.

Oh, ok. Anything else I need to do? After I pull that ring off is everything going to just slide out? I assume I just slip the new footpeg in and reassemble in reverse order?

off memory, ring comes off pull out little pin, take off old peg, slide new into place, put pin back in, and ring back on...

don't forget the wavy washer, if there is one. its function is to apply a little pressure or friction so the peg doesn't flop in the breeze.
snap ring pliers are relatively inexpensive and will make life much easier when working with snap rings.

Those little snap rings can be very frustrating, especially getting them back on. I went down to ACE hardware and bought a pair of snap ring pliers -- $13. Made the job very simple, plus they carry snap rings if you happen to goon up the original ones when trying to take them off.

I just did mine the other day. I used the snap ring pliers, you pull the pin out, and then pull the peg out. There is a small wavy washer about the size of a beer can tab that will drop out, take a look before pulling your old peg to see where the washer is, it shouldnt make any difference if you put the washer in any orientation.

I found that the regular circlip (snap ring) pliers that I could buy at the local car accessories place was no use for the circlips on the footpeg pins. The holes in the circlip are too small. instead I got a pair of Snap-On circlip pliers with especially small pins: #SRPC3890.

FYI

There are two types of snap rings, internal and external. If you are buying a set to keep in your tool box I would suggest the combo type.

Sears has a set for 20 bucks plus tax.

I posted the Sears link because most people know where it is. Snap-on tools you have to look for.

Just giving people a second choice...
