Hi Folks,

A while back I mentioned our saddlebag buy back program and promised details when we get the program on the road.

Basically send in your used, beat up saddlebags and get a Seventy dollar credit toward a new set of bags. Toss them in a box with your email address, name and shipping address. I'll send a coupon code that is good for $70 valid until 12/31/09. Check here for frequent updates.

Here's the official write up:

Objective: To determine how motorcycle saddlebags wear under real world conditions in order to identify improvements that will be implemented in our saddlebags.

Eligibility: Any used motorcycle saddlebags regardless of manufacturer, design or material of construction.

Scope: Fifty saddlebags

Method: Riders may submit used saddlebags to:
DONSCYCLEWARE.COM
405 N KNOB
IRONTON MO
63650

Rider should include email address, name and shipping address with the used saddlebags.

A seventy dollar coupon code good toward the purchase of new XL SERIES saddlebags will be issued to the participant via email and US mail.

Returned saddlebags will be inspected and analysis of failure modes performed.

Areas for improvement will be identified and corrective actions will be implemented in future production.

FAQ

How long is the coupon good for? Answer: Until December 31, 2009

What is the best way to ship the used saddlebags? Answer: I recommend shipping the used saddlebags via the least expensive carrier available. USPS, UPS Ground and FEDEX ground are good options. NOTE: Ship with tracking do not spend any extra for insurance.

What if the returned saddlebags are lost in shipment? Answer: I will issue your coupon in the unlikely event that the used bags are lost in shipment.

What are you going to do with the used saddlebags? Answer: They will be inspected then if usable listed on eBay for 99 cents. There is a chance that you may receive $70 for your used bags then buy them back for 99 cents!

Can I use the coupon for other purchases? Answer: The offer is being made to Sportster Riders. The coupon is good for XL Series Saddlebags only

Who pays shipping? Answer: the customer

How do I make sure I'm one of the fifty? Answer: The best way to make sure is to send your saddlebags in right away. I will post updates on the XL Forum often. I am also very flexible. If a few additional bags are submitted I will still issue a coupon code.

Any more questions? email me at DONC314@HOTMAIL.COM or post your question here.

Thanks

So far I have heard from two people. If they follow through 48 coupons will be left.

Why are you limiting the exchange to only new XL saddlebags?

If the XL saddlebags are priced at $149, can we use the coupon for a total single order more than $149?

Hi,

The whole buy back thing is about saddlebags. I was originally going to buy back just my bags. Then I expanded the scope to include any bags. If I keep going I'll be accepting anything from anybody in exchange for anything.

All my best

Ozark, my bags I got from you are great and work perfectly... However, I did mention a few things before... The bending of the front and rivets being loose.

Note that the right side bag only has loose rivets while the left has that bend. I don't know why that happens.... These bags have daily use for groceries, 6 packs of beer, etc.. you name it stuff into my bags... Personally, I don't have a problem with them like that, I like the used look.

Oh, one more thing, the tie downs on the back (to tie to the shock towers) have broken off. So my bags just swing in the air if I don't have any weight in them.

I'll have to measure my bags. I have a set of Willie & Max throwovers, and they've served me well.. If the XL Saddlebags from you are a lot bigger, I'll send them to you. (They're in great condition)

Hi,

I appreciate the feedback. This information is priceless for continuous improvement. Thanks for the pic.

I'm not sure what causes the bend. I saw a similar thing on a pair of bags that I used on my Iron Head. In that case it was both bags. I believed it was caused by my gal's legs resting on them. She liked having the bags to rest her legs so I left them alone. As I recall you don't carry passengers so I'm at a loss to say why this happened.

A couple of people have mentioned loosing the D rings. I believe this is due to three factors:
* Bad rivets ( I've addressed this with the manufacturer)
* Not leaving enough slack when attaching the tie-down
* The rivet pulling through the leather D ring strap. I have a couple of ideas for addressing this. I'm working with the manufacturer to implement a fix.

I'll forward some Chicago screws ASAP so you can reattach the D rings if you want. Please email me.

Thanks

Hi,

Mine are: 13" WIDE X 11" TALL X 6" THICK That's about as big as I can make them and still fit a Sporty without modifying the bike :)

I've been wanting to get my hands on a pair of W & M bags I am interested in seeing where they reinforce the stress points.

Incidentally, I read a lot of your posts. I appreciate having your input and tech info from a dealer's perspective.

You're welcome Ozark. The bending on that one bag happened about a month after I got the bags (we spoke about that on another post). I don't carry a passenger, but I do stuff them pretty good with groceries. I use that side the most because its easier to get to for me. Maybe its the combination of heat and humidity down here.

Parking at work they are exposed to full sun so they literally cook during the day. And I've gotten then soaked a few times with rain.

What are Chicago screws?

Any saddlebags will work. Got a pair your Pit Bull chewed on? Those are OK. ( Mention this because a buddy of mine left a bag of dog food in the saddlebag of his V Star. Do this and leave two Pit Bulls in the yard with your bike. Quess what happens? :wonderlan)

Did I forget to mention my buddy isn't the sharpest crayon in the box?

Hi,

Those are gals that work North Ave. oops I mean:

They are a type of fastener that looks like a rivet but screws together.

B) You've been good to this forum, and I've actually recommended you to several of my customer's at work. I like stand up people, and you seem to be one of them..

This is pretty much the optimum size for Sportsters if you do not want to relocate the rear signal lights.

I'll be happy to return your bags if you want.

Regarding treating people right. It sounds a little corny but I honestly believe you should treat people the way you would like to be treated. It's good business and you sleep better at night.

Hi Guys,

I have 40 coupons left. The first trade ins have started to arrive. A couple of people have asked about the best way to ship. I like Priority mail. Tracking is included and it takes about three days for the package to arrive. The boxes are free. Many saddlebags will fit in two of the 12X8 boxes one slid over the other. If you purchase your postage on line you get a discount. Here's a link (https://sss-web.usps.com/cns/landing.do) My advice; save your money don't buy insurance.

WOW!! $3500.00 buy back to improve your product. You rock!! The bags I bought from you are still new. My only suggestion would be a better lower attachment method (the shoe string around the shock could be upgraded).

A very satisfied customer.

Thanks Bob,

I appreciate the kind words.

I've got some ideas to strengthen the D-rings. At present I'm advising people to leave an inch or so of slack to allow for suspension travel. I'm looking for something better than the leather ties to do the actual attachment. So far the best idea anyone has submitted has been Velcro straps. I'm looking for an inexpensive source. I don't want to add five dollars to the price of the bags that the Velcro would cost.

Ride Safe!
