View Full Version : Changed things up a bit on the ol' 883N (PICS)

So, three things occurred to me recently. One, I don't like turn signals at all. Two, I don't want switches on my bars anymore. Three, the Biltwell Clubman bars made my primary member go numb. Not good.

So I found this guy's site, "Kilby Deuce," (www.kilbydeuce.com) while scouring the internet. This guy makes some really cool stuff. Including his Double Down Bars. So I ordered some, started cutting things apart, and bought a few switches. I figured since I'm one of maybe 4 EFI owners that doesn't mind the plastic loom cover under the tank, I'll utilize that for my switch bank.

Well...no turning back now. I figure in the future, I'll solder on some inline clips, in case I ever want to go back to handlebar switches.

Starter button and Kill switch locale

High-beam switch all buttoned up, ready for install.

Installed. The bastards I ordered my switches from decided not to tell me they didn't send the back-ordered button I wanted for my horn until I realized it wasn't in the box. It'll eventually go in front of the high-beam switch. Rubber boot pending.

Cut and mocked up, then off to the powder-coater.

I used a Joker Machine throttle housing, which is a VERY NICE unit. Accepted the stock throttle lock too. I've got a brake light switch banjo bolt I have yet to install, but I'll throw some more pics up once I get the horn button and brake light switch done.

Done for now.

Kirk that looks amazing! I love the no switches look... At some point, I'd love to steal some of your ideas!

So what's going to happen with the clubman bars now?

They're just sittin' on my workbench...switches still hanging off, haha. Those wires aren't going anywhere. If I use the switches again, I'll run wires, and solder on some quick connections. There's no use in saving what's left of the stock wiring.

I actually bought about 3-4 feet of switch wiring I saw on E-Bay a while back. Thought it would be handy, and as it turns out, it was.

Love those Kilbyduece bars and the switch setup. Did you see the kilby bars that are adjustable. I dont know what they are called but they are pretty bada$$ looking...Looks rad. Only thing looks wise I would add is a joker machine sproket cover.

Yes, the riding position rotates my butt, relieving pressure on my tailbone, which is most everyone's gripe about the ECM styled seats. I haven't done more than 20 minutes yet, but I'll report back soon...

It's funny too, how having bars back up top actually helps turn the bike with less effort, even though these bars are much narrower. Must be the angle of steering input is more perpendicular with the neck than with low bars.

Looks really good. Nice work. Those bars look great on there and the tan grips go nicely.
Funny, but I'm collecting bits and pieces for the build of my 96' and I was thinking along doing what you did....I may have to study your pics some more!

Anyone know what size the banjo bolts are on these bikes? I thought it was a 10mm x 1.25, and got a 3/8 x 24 for 10mm, but that one doesn't fit. The threads are too fine...

Anyone know what I should get? I have no idea...

Haha, yeah. I'm having to re-learn where my new switches are, and I keep finding myself trying to shut my bike off with my thumb while my hand it still on the throttle.

I'm gonna try to find some used hand controls so I can grind off the "flange" on Harley controls... Aftermarket M/C's and Clutch Perches are PRICEY!

Well done.

Why did you cut them (don't mind me asking) ?
for the feel/looks or did it interfere with something ?

I just wanted them about as narrow as I could without having the M/C sticking out in the middle of nowhere. I could probably go an inch more on either side, but like I said, the stock M/C will be sticking out in the middle of the bars...

I got my back-ordered momentary switch in, but still waiting on a boot for the high beam.

I simply CAN NOT find a brake light banjo bolt to fit the newer M/C's. I think the bolt is a 3/8 - 20, or a 3/8 - 16 and all the bolts I've found are 3/8 - 24. So I'm waiting til' the 9/16 size Dyna M/C I got from a guy to come in and I'm gonna switch to the V-Rod Caliper & Rotor setup. Should be fun switching out the rotor without a lift... :geek

Looks great. I like the cleaned up bars. Which part is that you used for the indicator lights? I am getting ready to do the bar/riser swap and I am thinking about some different options for the speedo relocate and indicator lights setup.

The thread I used to get part numbers for the indicator lights is this one:

The stock visor already has the hole for that style indicator strip. Just solder the new one on, it's pretty easy.

Should be fun switching out the rotor without a lift...

Looking good man... since I am down to one bike, I havent really done much to mine... I guess I like it, because it resembles mine.....

Anyway, the no lift part, if only removing the wheel to swap the rotor, isnt a problem....

Make a small block out of wood... for my dad's XLC, I used a 6x6, with a 2x4 on top(temporary, to change out a tire).

Use a 4ft section of 2x4, with 2 eyebolts on each end for a tie-down... just in case...

Then, use...2, 2ft sections on top of that... should be enough for a lowered bike....

lean the bike over on the side stand, to lift the front wheel up, and make room underneath for the block, and have some one slide it under the bike...lift the bike back onto it, tie her down, and go to work....

now I am sure this is a stupid question but here goes - do you have to put on turn signals for inspection? or is it okay to not have any?

The answer is...I'm not sure. I think all states fall under federal statute, which is that any bike produced after 1974 are required to have turn signals. Same year they switched to the mandatory left side shifter.

I guess I'll find out for sure when I got for inspection next March...

You know...if you get bored with that look, I bet hacking off the bottom of those bars, about an inch below the top cross bar, then using the top cross bar to mount to the risers would look pretty bad ass.

As for the rest, I'm right there with you. I'm going to reroute my ignition, kill and start switch down to my battery box (currently hardtailing my ride), then looking into micro switches for my bars. Signal/horn on the right and high beam/signal on the left. That should clean it up nicely.

Good job!

Only issue about the top cross bar is that it's a 7/8" OD. I'd have to use some shims I guess for that to work, but good idea...

By the way, I found this about turn signals in Texas, and posted in the thread asking about it, but thought I'd share here too...

Found it... sweet.

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/publications/rules/rules.html

Chapter 4: Inspection Procedures
05.07 Inspect every motorcycle and motor-driven cycle - lists items required to pass inspection
20.29 Turn Signal Lamps – in item 3 it notes that they are not required for motorcycles

Motorcycles, motor-driven cycles, and mopeds are not required to be equipped with turn signal lamps.

Though, I believe federal statute states that motorcycles manufactured after 1974 are required to have turn signals. They, though, can only regulate manufactured, and new vehicles. What you do afterwards is up to the state's regulation.

It does depend on the state.....

In Texas, and Virginia, I never had a problem about no signal lights...

Here is the Socialist State of Taxachusetts,

You need fenders.. not only that, they have to be a certain length....

You NEED reflectors

You NEED signal lights

Bars, can only be a certain height...

Hell, pretty much, any departure from stock, will make it difficult to get a sticker... and people ask why I still have Texas tags on my bike...

I dont have a front fender, have a shortened rear fender, pipes, etc....

Kirk... I've got a few questions if you don't mind...
1. What did you do about the clutch switch (there is one right?)?
2. What happened with the front brake and the banjo bolt? Was that for the switch or the break line?
3. What were the "ratings" on the switches you used? I guess they just need to be more than 15 volts (more than the fuses)?
4. What other problems did you face that you could give us the heads-up on before starting the switch removal?

Thanks!
