Hi,

New to the forums, so please excuse me if I post to the wrong place.

I'm in the process of "Street Tracking" my '95 sporty. So far all I've done are the wheels and handlebars. It looks REALLY square right now!

At this point I'm planning on the Storz rear end, unless I can find something better.

Anyway, my questions is; Where would a guy find an old-style ('70s to around '80) XR750 Tank? Does anyone build an aluminum tank in that style that could be adapted to fit my bike? I'm wary of fiberglass.

Thanks,
Garrett

I got an real Harley OEM XR 750 gas tank off of Ebay about a year ago, and I've seen several others since. The old ones are fiberglass, and would need some custom fab work for the mounting brackets to go on a newer bike.

FYI - there are two basic styles, the "teardrop" shaped one that Storz has, and the older ones, which have more of rectangle profile to them.

Have you had any problems with the fiberglass reacting to additives in pump gas? Ideally, I'd like to get an OEM one as well. I don't mind if it's not totally "bolt-on". I'm not a huge fan of the new teardrop ones.

Did you mount yours on a sporty? I'd love to see pics!

Thanks for the reply!

My tank is still un-mounted, as my XR is still in pieces, waiting for my cams to show up. The tank looks to have some kind of factory sealing inside it, but I intend to have a local custom paint shop re-seal it when they paint it (they said they have some kind of set-up for doing a fiberglass tank). I may have to do some fab work myself, since the tank is for a factory XR 750 and not a normal XR 1000. If I remember, there are just 2 mounting lugs on it, on either side of the center tunnel.

I haven't been on Storz's website lately, but I think they have ones that should bolt right on.

I do have a Storz rear tailpiece / seat and it looks mean, especially compared to the regular full coverage fender

The Storz tank requires you weld a small bracket to the top of the frame. That holds the top of a bolt as it sticks up and the tank has a rubber bushing in the center and a nut holds it down. Tunnel has strips of rubber that sit between the frame and the tank. The tank is alumium so it can't touch anything steel. I wasn't sure about it at first but it works just fine.

AirTech has a nice fiberglass one that's exactly the style I want. Pricey, plus 2 petcocks. Hmmmm....

Dang! Can't post the URL yet. Guess I have to do 15 posts before I can. Sorry.
