View Full Version : I bought HD boots from Zappos
gardkarlsen 20th April 2005, 14:52 Hi
My local HD store doesn't really have a good selection of boots and they are also quite expensive here in Norway. The boots section is not that great on the HD website but I found lots of options when I found Zappos. Check out http://www.zappos.com/n/es/d/722000796.html for a selection of HD boots (for men that is). I went for a pair of boots called Neo and I'm quite happy with them so far. There is a zipper on the saide so getting them on and off is easy. The boots are quite thick so it is hard to get under the gear level but it is not a big issue because the boots have a thick sole that sticks out so I use this to change gears :-) Well, here is a picture of the boots...not too flashy...just enough :-)

socal1200c 20th April 2005, 22:10 I bought a new pair of boots last weekend from the local stealer. I got the "Austin"
http://www.spiritharley.com/store/media/D95355_L.jpg
They are $135 USD. They are re-soleable have a foam cushioned footbed and they are already comfortable needing little if any break-in. If you like this style of boot I'd say give 'em a try.
One more thing, if you notice the sole on this boot isn't monster sized so they allow for easy shifting on my forward controls....
canroc 20th April 2005, 22:29 Nice boots.
I'm looking for a pair of waterproof ones but cannot find anything that looks good.
socal1200c 20th April 2005, 23:08 You can treat the leather on these boots with your favorite tratment to make the water resistant. I also like that there are no laces on the front to let water into the boot.

Most of the time my feet got soaked it was from the spray off the front wheel, I am hoping these help cut down on that a little.
But man you aren't kidding... these are some comfortable boots. I have been riding to work in them all week but I am looking forward to breaking them in this weekend for sure :D

I use these (http://www.redwingshoe.com/shoe-zoom.cfm?style=1270) from Red Wing (http://www.redwingshoe.com) and I absolutely LOVE them for riding...then again I haven't had a pair of Red Wings yet that I haven't liked. I've alway$ purcha$ed my own in the pa$t but I'm lucky enough now that I have an employer that will buy me one pair of work boots every two years. I just make sure that I get some that work for riding. :clap

That's exactly what I am looking for :clap .. but can I get them in North America?
I want good looking waterproof boots like those. Even if I spray waterproofing on my boots, on long eight or more hour rides in the rain that I do on my long trips invariably, the waterproofing does not last... I have been using gators to cover my boots up to now, but they take up valuable packing space, and they are a pain to put on and take off.. and impossible to walk with.

pperrone 25th April 2005, 14:17 I bought a pair of H-D Relax boots from Zappos a year ago. They where on clearence and I paid $50 including shipping. The dealer in Mobile hasd the same boot for $120 + tax!
Bottom line: good deals to be found on line rather than at the dealer.

Try u.s. calvalry. com they have a lot of boots there!! When I was active, I would get my boots from there instead of clothing/sales.

Thanks for the tip. www.uscav.com is a great site :) Lots of waterproof boots to choose from... and the prices are reasonable too.
04newhog 1st May 2005, 02:41 Leatherup.com sells Harley boots resonably priced.
engine 10th May 2005, 00:34 Right now I wear Timberland Pro series waterproof boots with 400g thinsulate. I use the same boots for work for the steel toe and ANSI electrical rated sole and stuff (job requirement), but I also have a pair that I wear when not at work (and for riding). I'll probably buy another riding boot that goes higher up the leg, these are just over the ankle. http://www.timberland.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1775203&cp=1762199.1780841&clickid=mainnav_browse_txt&parentPage=family

Stang951 5th October 2008, 04:55 1. How do you stop the top from getting destroyed by the shift peg? My justins are getting ruined already, and so are two other pairs of boots, Hitechs and Altimas. Both were very good duty boots for me, just cant' hold up to riding and working.
2. What the hell does waterproof really mean!!! I had my altimas which have never let any water in while working. Rode in a serious storm one day and had to stuff and restuff with newspaper for two days to dry out.

Now now...Not worried about scratching.. that gives character. I mean destroying....!!! The top of the last three boots lasted for less than a month. The top layers of the leather were literally chunked off!!
OH and a NOOB here YES, but not to the cycle. Just more in tune to the cost now that I have 2 extra mouths to feed. I want to get the most for the buck now!!! Thrash me if you will, but if I can learn from someone elses mistakes or experiances who is the wiser????
luisuie 5th October 2008, 06:45 I bought my HD Phantom boots on ebay for 60 bucks shipped. Local stealer wants 130 plus tax. They look great but could be a little more comfortable and they are not waterproof. I still like them. Just applied a coat of mink oil to seal them off from the rain and installed Dr. Sholls gel insoles and I am good to go.
Most of the time I find myself ridding in my duty boots. These are combat boots made by Altima that I wear while working (police/fire/medic). I am just to lazy to switch them out at the end of my shift.

That is how I found out that the Hitec's and the Altimas I had were not good for riding. I took a closer look this morning at them. The "tactical" coating is chunked off, not the leather (my apologies) which shows the undyed leather underneath.
The Altimas are Litespeeds and not as bad as the hitecs. I definitely would not recommend Hitecs if someone wants a boot that will hold up.
jarhead 6th October 2008, 11:21 Stang, it doesn't matter how waterproof your boots are, if you are in a serious downpour, they will get wet. Even gortex can't protect if the water is running down your leg into the top of the boot.
I don't really mind being wet, but then again, I'm amphibious!

Have you done anything silly like check the bottom of your shifter pawl...?
Stang951 6th October 2008, 17:09 Have you done anything silly like check the bottom of your shifter pawl...?
I am surprised that no one brought that up sooner. Answer is Yes I checked it. My shifter peg is a black diamond so it is naturally a little course, but there are no spurs pr gawls in it to cause problems with chunking leather. Like I wrote a few posts ago, it is not actual chunks of leather, it is the tactical coating on the boots that is coming off. This has always been a problem with Hitec boots (if you keep them for any amount of time). As much as I used to love them, their quality has gone down and I will no longer buy them.

I didn't mind getting caught in the storm that I swam through. Just making a statement that waterproof does not mean that water will not get in. I definitely have to give kudos to the Altimas as they drained fairly well, and quickly. Just had to cycle newspaper through them for two days before I could use them to go to work again.

Sucks to hear. I have a pair of Hi-Tec Magnums that I wore back when I was a grunt, but only in garrison (IOW not too often). I love the comfort of them (like sneakers) along with the ankle support. They've about had it by now and I was hoping to get another pair like them.
Stang951 6th October 2008, 19:14 I like the Altimas much better, but havent had then for more than 6 months. All of my Hitecs just did not last. I wore the soles out on one pair in the mid 90's. I replaced them somewhere in 97 and have not had a good pair since. I even went above and got a pair of their side zip waterproof Phantom V-Lites. the first pair started to come apart on one of the side panels. Took them back and were swapped out for a new pair. The next pair the side zip locked in place after the waranty expired. I had to completely undo all of the laces to get the boot off.
Really ashame too because I liked the Phantom V-Lite series.
I tried the 511 boots after that and really liked them, but they do not breath very well. I got the waterproofs and a friend got the regular boots. Both of us had problems with odor after three months, and noticed that our feet constantly sweat with them.
Now on the Altimas. I have ridden with them a few times, but dont want to take the chance of messing them up too much, so I bought a pair of 65.00 Justin Ropers from Academy Sports. That way I dont feel tooo bad about them getting ruined later on.
luisuie 22nd November 2008, 07:54 Stang951, I know this is a late response to your post but I have used the Altimas for about 8 months and they are still going strong. There is a spot on my left foot where the shifter goes that is lighter in color to the rest of the boot, but other than that, they are fine. It is breathable and holds up to water ok. Only tested on a light drizzle day. Mine have the side ziper for easy on and off and a velcro strap at the top of the zipper. Both are fine. There is some wear on the soles and the over all apearance looks like ok not to shity. I should say, however, that these boots were used at a detail shop where alot of chemicals were splashed on, such as wheel cleaner acid, concentrated soaps, plastic dressing, rain-x, and paint sealants. In addition, they are used as my daily shoes for my other job in public safety where they are under constant strain. They are my hiking boots during Search and Rescue where we "hunt" people who are missing in the woods. Also used during Mounted Search and Rescue where they constantly come in contact with horse manure. So I do expect them to show some wear. Shoes generally last me about a year before I need to replace them and I see no short comings from the Altimas.
