View Full Version : Sign Language while Riding...

For years I've thought about the feasibility of using sign language while riding and wondered what everyone else's take is on that? I rode routinely with a bud and we could pseudo sign each other, like "low on gas", "gotta pee", "thirsty", "eye candy ahead", and stuff like that, but I've wondered if two people could actually sign, it would open up a whole new way of communicating on bikes...I'm not high tech enough to go with an intercom or radio type set-up...just looking for a little better way to let your buddies know what's going on...I think I'm going to learn basic sign language anyway...my daughter's roommate is a speech pathologist, so I've got a patient teacher to try to teach this old dog a new trick! :D

wouldn't be good for me, only sign I know is to tell people that they are #1 :D

Same here...the only hand signal I know is the "International Symbol of Unity". ;)

I have a friend with no hearing. I've watched the signing (don't know it yet) and it seems to require LOTSA attention. That would seem problematic and potentially dangerous when trying to focus attention of the road as well... I'd sure be interested to know if it does work, though.

When you ride with someone who knows you, those "quick signs" are awesome....unfortunately, not enough people KNOW sign languge....and it seems to be visually too intensive, tho I could be wrong.....

Thanks, Reeky! There were a few there that I'd never seen, so I'll add those to my "riding dictionary"!

And you're right, Jeff...it wouldn't be safe to carry on a whole conversation in sign while you're riding...I guess I had visualized just being able to let my buddy know what my intentions were more clearly...it would probably be a good idea to have a shortened version of signing for riding like you mentioned...maybe I'll just add a few more to the ones Reeky referred me to, and that will probably cover most situations! I have three hearing impaired people here at work that don't sign yet, but they are experts at reading lips! Although sometimes I won't trim my mustache for awhile, and they have a real hard time reading my lips! I know...my bad! :D I don't think reading lips would be safe while riding, either, so that option is out!

I think I'll learn to sign anyway...us baby boomers who have been to way too many concerts in our lifetime will probably be signing in the nursing homes!

Funny you should mention concerts....in the biz, we have a LOT of hand signals we use....we have to, you can't hear s**t!

That's how my best friend and I are able to communicate so well when riding...he's in the biz, too....

I can usually get my point across to my husband that I need to stop immediately or that he has done something that I'm not happy about (lead us down a road I don't like, etc.) with just a simple look. Of course, I understand that we ladies have an advantage, having been born with the instinct for perfecting "the look." ;)

Another problem is that American Sign Language requires both hands.

Signing to another biker or cager is real easy. Here are the basics:

I need gas.........I point at my tank

I need food.......I point at my belly

I need a beer.....I tilt an imaginary can toward my mouth

I need sex..........I grab my crotch

:censor you ....I give the middle finger salute

really, what else is there?
