Acually, never. He was on a chain with the stake that has a swivel on it when that pic was taken at a local park here where we all were. He's been on a chain about three times is all, our back yard is fenced and he's free to roam there. He & I are alot alike, sorta free to roam at times, then on a real short leash other times. :shhhh

Finally. It doesn't really count 'cause I fished for the question, but I will answer anyway.

My avatar pic was taken after a long, challenging, yet ultimately rewarding ride. I left home that morning header for parts unknown. I took a few roads I had not traveled before, through twisty farm roads with dirt washed across the pavement, to bumpy and broken up asphalt where great wineries loomed. I still eschewed Hwy 101, and instead headed over mountains to fall into Santa Barbara from the east.

It seemed that I had enough time left, so I took a putt down State Street looking at the ladies, enjoying the site of the fine folk exploring the shops and restaurants, and the occational mutant out on display. One last gas stop in town, and I would be home not long after beer-thirty.

I pulled up to the pump, killed the engine and dropped the bike onto the kickstand. That was when not only my AC, but my Carb as well, sort of fell away from the engine. My carb support bracket had broken on one side, and was barely attached at the other. As fortune would have it, I had a single pair of vise-grips in my toolkit, and was able to re-insert the carb into the intake manifold, and clamp the support braket tight enough with the vise-grips to ride real slow, but it was clear the other side of the bracket was ready to break.

I puttered around looking for a bike shop or a hardware store. A Napa store had a small pair of needle nosed vise-grips, but not a matching set. That mis-matched pair got me to the OSH store in Goleta, where I bought one of each. The rabbit ear like projections in my avatar are tools, functioning as structural elements, that held up over a 2 1/2 ride home at highway speed. I did a lot of looking down during that ride. I took pictures when I got back home safely. The bracket has since been replaced.

To be honest ghl, I never did notice the vice grips in the avatar pic, but interesting story. Sounds like they would be a good thing to carry in one's tool kit for sure. If you like your avatar, leave it, do waht makes "you" happy...vice grips/air cleaner or flaming Boston Terrier dog avatar...it's all good. :smoke

A friend, who was very mechanically inclined, had a 6" pair of vise grips and we loosened up the cable enough to get a pigtail through the lever, enough of one to grab with the vise grips. I rode around like that for the rest of the day and into the next, until I could get to the dealer for a new cable.

What ever gets you home. Be it a XLF member, your wonderfully attractive significantly other, or a pair of vise grips... it's all good.
