Any one have any recommendations for inexpensive but decent motels up in Canada ?
We're planning nite-stops at Picton, Port McNicoll, and Welland areas.

thanks, dapiglet

For the Welland stop, you'd be just as well to run right down to Niagara Falls. A bunch of the Canadian Crew from the Erie Run stayed at a joint called the Bonanza Motel on Lundy's Lane, only a few blocks from the downtown tourist area. I think it cost them something like $50/night, and the bikes were obscured from the street, so there was a little extra safety (not that it's a high crime area, but extra security is always welcome!). Plus it's right across the street from a gas station and a Red Lobster, and about two blocks away from a beer store! :D

Here's a link with their contact info and location on a NF map: http://www.niagara-info.com/motel.htm

However, if you really want Welland, I'll do some recon for you (since I'm in the area) and let you know what shakes loose.

I'm VERY jazzed about a Lake Ontario run.....

Maybe this is even better than ANOTHER Lake Erie Run!

AFTER the 4th weekend, and on Bert's birthday....how appropo'

I'd miss our buds from Michigan, tho.... :(

Thanks for the suggestions Casper.
We're planning on catchin' the motorcycle races in Welland.
Someone suggested I check with Choice-Hotels-Int. since they
have Comfort Inns in Picton, Port McNicoll, & Welland.

In that case, I'll scout it out for ya.

If it's the same one I think it is, it's a pretty nice place! (Been there once).

The Comfort Inns in Belleville & Welland worked out fine .... parked the
bikes right outside the rooms sliding glass doors.... nice people too.
Didn't get to stay at the Comfort in Midland ... we didn't make it that far north.
'cause my engine blew-up about 25 miles south of Orillia, Ontario.
Got towed ~ 60 miles to HD dealer in Barrie ......
tore her apart & found a chunk outta the rear-piston, ... shattered
rings.... tore up cylinder walls & combustion chamber.....
fragments got sucked thru the intake manifold into front cylinder ....
ugly story.....
fatal damage to pistons & cylinders ..... was able to rebuild both
heads.
No pieces/metal got past the oil-rings so the bottom-end was clean...
rods didn't bend.... valves didn't get bent.
Didn't have the parts in stock to rebuild mine, so we took parts off one
of the mechanic's personal chopper bike to make me an engine..... quite
a great bunch of people up at Barrie Harley Davidson - Eeh ?.
26-hours after explosion I was back on the road.

The bike had been running great the whole trip, getting about 55 mpg on
and I had just checked the tank level as the odometer showed that I'd
gone 110 miles since my last
fill-up so I had more than a gallon of fuel in the tank - easily enough
to get to our next planned stop.
Then, suddenly .... there was a little "flutter" that usually indicates
fuel-starvation.....

The only danger to me was from the TRUCKER that was ridin' my arse just
as the power fluttered the first time, instantly reducing my speed from
55mph down to 10mph as I gradually pulled over to the edge of the 2-lane
road to get out of everyone else's way without getting into the gravel &
sand that bordered the roadbed.
At first I thought it was just the fuel getting low so I threw the valve
to get to the reserve-setting and the rev's seemed to pick back up for a
bit and I shut her down. (notice that engines are always named "her".)

When I started it back up it was only the rear cylinder that was making
a little ticking sound ....
(probably the first little piece of aluminum off the rear piston) so we
tried to get down the road a bit further, ..... and we made it about 500
yards before the "ticking" sound changed into something else as the rear
piston came apart and shattered the compression rings, and it all got
sucked thru the manifold into the front cylinder - at that point it was
obvious that the engine had suffered a critical failure but we didn't
know how serious it was.

Not sure why the piston failed .... had ~ 25,000 miles on the Wiseco's;
dyno-runs in 2002 & 2007. The repair parts used were off a 883,
so it will be a while before I can afford to do another 1200 kit.:frownone :frownone :frownone
