Received my NRHS HurricandFlow 3" Offset air cleaner yesterday, installed it today. The following are my observations.
First of all I ordered the 3" because I wanted as fully...or as close as possible...a free breathing system as possible. Even though the NRHS web site said that the difference between the 2" and the 3" wouldn't be felt until the bike was increased to 95-100 HP, my reasoning was less restriction would would give better performance at higher speed regardless. After I ordered it I had the chance to talk with Justin of NRHS who graciously answered my questions, confirming that it would improve performance.
When I opened the box there were two packages: the HurricanFlow air cleaner, and a Drag Specialties breather kit, which I also ordered.
Quality: ***** (five out of five stars) both the breather kit, and the air cleaner appeared to be of top quality
Fitment: ***** the HurricaneFlow with the bracket included with the breather kit fit perfectly. All were heavy duty, well cut, no jagged edges. When bolted on, everything fit solidly.
Instructions: *** Drag Specialties breather kit included no instructions. It was only through remembering the various discussion in the forum…and of course superior native intelligence…that I figured out where to put the 6 clear plastic washers. The instructions included with the HurricaneFlow were minimal, leaving considerable room for interpretation. If I were to offer any suggestions for improvement to NRHS it would be to improve their instructions. I strongly suggest including a couple of extra pages that contain prints of the excellent photos on their web site. It also wouldn’t hurt to have a couple of scale size drawings of the screws so the less techie of us could be sure we are using the correct screw in the correct application.
Performance: ***** Wow! Felt more at the higher RPMs, the replacement of my Screamin Eagle air cleaner with the HurricaneFlow 3” was nothing less than spectacular. I’m somewhat at a loss as to how to explain the performance at lower speed. It seemed to “smooth out” the engine, and made the rumble of the pipes much more “mellow.” At higher speeds, the bike seemed to run with much less effort and seemed limitless in capability for higher speed and power. As an example, I pulled onto the interstate and merged into traffic. Feeling the “need for speed” I snapped the throttle to full open. Almost did a wheelie at 70mph!!! I was at 90mph before I knew it, and it showed no signs of not being able to continue well beyond that! Taking off on a quick, impromptu trip of about 80 miles, I saw an noticeable improvement in mpg. More to follow in this as I measure a few longer trips.
Overall: ***** Well pleased with the HurricaneFlow 3” after my first day of experience. :clap
