View Full Version : One bad Buell!
Y2K 25th April 2005, 02:41 Thought some O' you Buellers and fans might like this local bad boy Buell that has been a bully out at the local track lately with 1st place wins in two classes.I had the same guy that built this li'l rocket do the 95" TC in my Glide.

Bill2 25th April 2005, 03:10 Nice man, i'd like to take it for a few laps! I bet it pulls like gangbusters!
Ingemar 25th April 2005, 10:45 Finally a more detailed spec sheet of a competitive race bike.
I think the ride on that beast will be kinda scary at first for us mere mortals.
Thanks for sharing. If you ever run into a recent dyno sheet of that bike please post it.
wickedsprint 25th April 2005, 13:44 Nice looking bike, I bet it is a screamer, although for around 10k you can get the same performance from most bone stock 1000CC sportbikes, although that buell will be easier to work on I imagine.

The same number representing HP, on the crank. Not quite the same as 160RWHP.
Besides, they don't come with 110 ft-lb of torque. And if they do, it will be at 9000RPM which is where it stops on this bike.
Even worse, A stock XB12 has more torque than a stock 1000cc repli-racer. :p
I know. I apologize for being a smart ass. :)

B
First off...that buell posted 147 at the rear wheel, not the 160 they expected. (the specs SAY 160 expected, 147 actual)
A BONE STOCK 2004/2005 yamaha R1 makes 158 hp at the rear wheel and 180 at the crank..
FYI..that yamaha is making those numbers while meeting EPA standards..IE "un-taxed"...

Yeah, but then you'd be riding a Yamaha :frownone .

LOL and is the end of that!!! :smoke

That was with the first build and test ,if you look closely the compression has been bumped from 11:1 up to 12:1 and more tuning in the works.
Knowing Mike I'd be supprised if he didn't come within 5 hp of what he expected when it was all said and done.
wickedsprint 27th April 2005, 14:55 Still missing the point...you said the crotch rockets aren't making that kind of power stock, they are. I am not arguing the merits of USA bikes vs. Jap bikes, just saying the jap bikes are throwing down insane power numbers for being bone stock and meeting EPA standards, some of them even as maintenence free as our beloved sporties. That Buell is likely a wheelie monster though!

Incorrect...someone else said that,I was just pointing out you error about the chart. :smoke
AZbiker 27th April 2005, 18:27 wickedsprint,
Which asian motorcycles are more maintenence free than the Sportster? Not the GL1800 (shim-under-bucket valvetrain), maybe the FJR1300 (if it has hydraulic lash adjusters, but I somehow doubt it). Could it be the ST1300? I dunno. The Nighthawk 750 doesn't count, it's not in production anymore :( .
There's a few cruisers that beat the H-D for maintenence (Shadow 1100's come to mind). But AFAIK, no standard-style bikes or sportbikes.
Ever pulled the cams on an inline 4? Honda's V-4's are even more fun. In addition to that, the maintenance the cooling systems & chain final drive require make them much more high maintenance than any hydrauilc-lifter equipped air-cooled H-D IMHO.
Of course those bikes throw down good numbers, they have liquid cooling, 4 (or 5) valves per cylinder with shim-under valvetrains and EFI. Not to mention, more cylinders.

Maybe my old GSXR. Have not done anything on it in 12 months. Just fill 'er up and go! :D :D :D

I do not believe I made an error about any such chart, lets recap..someone posted about a 160 rwhp buell..which cooincidently only made 147 at the rear wheel..as shown in the links spec sheet, I said you can get comparable performance from a bone stock Jap bike...in actuality the jap bike bested it by ten HP, all the while meeting EPA standards for pollution.
Which chart are you refering?
wickedsprint 27th April 2005, 19:21 Obviously just about anything requires more maintenence than a sporty, but I consider chains and whatnot as not a big deal since it takes all of 5 minutes to adjust a chain, FYI that Yamaha R1 gets its first valve check at 26,600 miles, not to shabby.

OK...here's the error :D The chart shows 147 RHP with 11:1 compression on the initial dyno run.
The 160RHP expected is after bumping compression up to 12:1 and more tuning.I started this thread,I took the pictures and I know the engine builder.
I have not seen the dyno results after the compression bump and tuning so I don't know the final result.
Anyway ya slice it they're still impressive numbers from an aircooled pushrod twin.I never remarked about any comparo with a Jap inline watercooled four that was someone else.On that point I would agree with you even if it's comparing apples and oranges.

wickedsprint 27th April 2005, 20:19 Well technically it is not an error until they re dyno the bike with the upped compression :), for all we know it could detonate or pop a head gasket :), the FACT still stands..it has dynoed 147rwhp :)
It was me who made the initial comparison to a jap bike. I would rather have the Buell still, nothing like 160hp that you can rebuild in an afternoon.

Lol! well I guess that's close enough for me,however the pics I took were taken last fall and this spring the bike took first place wins in two classes on the track at PIR.
I have no doubt it made more ponnies but I haven't seen the dyno results only the race results :smoke

Was that before or after it popped a head gasket?
