View Full Version : Official 1st. Lake Ontario Ride
olderthandirt 26th May 2007, 16:03 Aug 10-14 will be a ride around Lake Ontario, Anyones invited to join, on any bike.
We will start on Fri. to allow the Michigan riders a day to get near Buffalo as that will make a great starting point.
After that its open for suggestion on clockwise - counter clockwise and I hope Steve and Mick will be joining us and can set up the northern rt.
All thats needed now is some plans on where to meet and who's going :tour
The best part about any trip is the ride everything else will work out :banana
Bikerchk 26th May 2007, 16:26 Is Mrs. OTD going on the trip?
I'm in, and already have the time off of work!
Bikerchk 26th May 2007, 16:50 When is TO traffic ususally the worst? Would it be better if we go into TO on a Friday night (I'm thinking that everyone might be heading out of town?) or should we try to hit it midday on a weekday?

Friday night traffic is bad in Toronto, in or out. Midday is the best. Weekends are ok for the most part.
Bikerchk 26th May 2007, 18:16 Ok so that probably means we need to go counterclockwise, eh?
olderthandirt 26th May 2007, 18:16 Is Mrs. OTD going on the trip?

yes she is going.
If Toronto present a problem we can go around it or I'll check with a local HOG chapter about an escort through the city. They usually can get permission with the local cops to block traffic at major intersections if theres enough riders.
Quebeker 26th May 2007, 18:45 When is TO traffic ususally the worst? Would it be better if we go into TO on a Friday night (I'm thinking that everyone might be heading out of town?) or should we try to hit it midday on a weekday?
TO traffic is best between 2AM and 215AM IF there is no closure on ANY of the freeways.
I cant make it, my vacation is 2 weeks before.
canroc 26th May 2007, 19:01 Ok so that probably means we need to go counterclockwise, eh?
IMHO that would be the best direction to go.
Friday night would be somewhere in NY... somewhere east of Rochester.. maybe Sodus or Oswego depending on start time from Buffalo or Lewiston area and route. We could do 104 from Lewiston to Rochester and along Lake Road east of Rochester. From Lewiston to Rochester is about 2 hours. From Rochester to Sodus is over an hour. Maybe staying Friday night in or near Rochester might be more reasonable.
Saturday night could be in Kingston, just over on the Canadian side... then through Toronto on Sunday midday, perhaps stopping at the Beaches in Toronto for a nice break.. arriving in Niagara Sunday evening... then back home on Monday for those going further west.
Note: stopping in Toronto for a break at the Beaches depends on how many bikes we have.. parking can be an issue on the weekends there.
Hanoverfiste 26th May 2007, 19:44 I know I wont be able to make it for the whole ride. But Will be able to catch part of the route... once everythings figured out, I will be sure to attend some portion of the ride...
olderthandirt 26th May 2007, 19:50 Fri. nite in Rochester is too long a ride for the Michigan riders. Buffalo would be a long ride but doable. Rochester by noon Sat. would be more manageable

Ok. Leaving Buffalo on Saturday and taking the scenic route along 104 and Lake Rd will still get us to Kingston Ontario for Saturday night.
SteveK 26th May 2007, 21:39 I'm in. I will have to make sure its okay with my client but since its over 2 months out it shouldn't be a problem.
Danny3nose 26th May 2007, 22:06 Here we go again!
oakies 26th May 2007, 22:19 Wont be able to make this one....I go to Watkins Glen for the week every year for the Nascar Race...which is on the 12th of Aug.
olderthandirt 26th May 2007, 23:45 Ok. Leaving Buffalo on Saturday and taking the scenic route along 104 and Lake Rd will still get us to Kingston Ontario for Saturday night.
That would be riding counter clockwise, which puts us in Toronto sun afternoon?
That would work, Ohio and Mich. riders could stay at the same hojo in Oh and make it home mon.
xbuzzardx 26th May 2007, 23:49 Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make this go-around. August is a very busy time for the family. Hope you guys have a safe trip and I'm sure you're gonna have a blast.
Have a beer for me, if you would,
Mike

Yeah....I'm thinkin Buffalo, or just a little south/west of there....Hamburg or so?
I can hook up a hotel around there....then under the lake (maybe the Canadians can join US this time! :) ) and around...TBD...Second day's gonna have to be a bear!

That's right about the second day. You'll need to take off early that day.. no lollygagging about at the breakfast table. We could probably spend the night in Watertown NY and still make Toronto at a decent time.
olderthandirt 27th May 2007, 00:43 The Ohio posse has already said there in. That would be Danny, Joe, Nancy Dave, Steve, Me & the wife. :banapart
Now we need to hear from the meechigan riders and the Eskimos:D
We could probably spend the night in Watertown NY and still make Toronto at a decent time.
No we need to get Shark Doc. across the bridge ASAP lol
Bikerchk 27th May 2007, 15:58 Just to clarify, I don't think Dave is going to make this run so it will be me solo-maybe I can borrow his BT, whaddya think?????

We make the run through Toronto on Sunday the Ohio and Meechigan riders can ride like the wind and be across the north part of lake erie to the ferry back to Ohio or to Windsor for the nite.
That makes mon. a walk in in the park to make it home.
Shark Doctor 30th May 2007, 16:06 OK. So it's no secret that I have a problem with bridges... And the Thousand Islands bridges are actually the cause of this (I would elaborate if I was sufficiently wasted!).
So, I have an alternative suggestion to the crossing at I-81 in NY to Canada... Might actually even save some time, too.
If you look at a map of NY, you'll see to the west of where I-81 crosses into Canada the town of Cape Vincent. To the north is Wolfe Island, an area known for snowy owls, among other things, and to the north of that, Kingston, Ontario where we plan to spend an evening I guess.
It just so happens that there is a cheap ferry from Cape Vincent to Wolfe Island and then a FREE ferry from Wolfe Island to Kingston.
If we did this route,
1. We could stay along the lake for a better ride heading east and north,
2. We could shave off some time
3. We could see some very scenic island sights,
4. I could keep my breakfast down.
Just looking for alternatives. (NOTE: I would probably do this anyway and just meet everyone in Kingston once we decide on a place to stay.)
Any thoughts?
Bikerchk 30th May 2007, 18:00 I wonder how many bikes those ferries can hold at once?
I'm good with this idea because I really don't need to see SD's regurgitated breakfast
Casper 30th May 2007, 18:11 So just to make sure I have this right (as my boss is bugging me to confirm vacation time ASAP):
Friday: Michigan -> Buffalo
Saturday: Buffalo -> Kingston
Sunday: Kingston -> Ft. Erie
Is that the plan so far?
Bikerchk 30th May 2007, 18:19 I think that is the plan!
Shark Doctor 30th May 2007, 20:50 I wonder how many bikes those ferries can hold at once?
If there is any support for this route, I'll call and find out and see if we can make reservations or if they're even necessary...
Look: you guys are probably scared of sharks. I'm not.
But bridges? Damn. Put me under the water, not over it!

A guy who plays with sharks doesn't like bridges. Go figure! LOL I'd like to hear that story.
I just may join you on your ferry ride; the last one was pretty neat. I found a link to one of them, I think. Schedule is pretty good -- leaves every hour.
http://www.wolfeisland.com/ferry.php
Someone at work took the ferry(s) to Kingston once, saved her a 7-hour wait on the bridge.
Ok. Leaving Buffalo on Saturday and taking the scenic route along 104 and Lake Rd will still get us to Kingston Ontario for Saturday night.
Scenic for Western NY would be head up from Buffalo to Lewiston along the Niagara river, then take Rt 18 to Rochester. It would be nice to take the parkway but the western end (Debsters house to Hamlin beach) is like a washboard. Then from Rochester 104 to RedCreek then 104A to Oswego, back onto 104 to NewHaven then 104B to Rt 3 then up to Clayton or where ever the ferry is on Rt 3.
Alternatively you could take a more southern route from Buffalo along Rt 20 maybe passing the north end of a few of the finger lakes, then head up to Lake Ontario near Seneca Falls to RedCreek and the same as above.
Thing is you don't get to see any of the lake along Rt 104. Rt 18 on the west end will put you near the lake in a few places. Then 104A and Rt 3 at the east end will let you see some water.
Or were you talking lake road east of rochester? That's a nice road.

I talked to them this afternoon. No problem getting on the ferry: just show up. No reservations required (or taken!). Can easily handle up to 50 bikes!!! $7 for the ride. No tie-downs necessary (as some of us know, they can be required by some ferries). He said the island and Kingston were biker-friendly.
I've actually started work on another book, but this one just a tad different than the others. This will be a photo essay on a biker's view of small ferries of Americana, or "How to Travel America by Motorcycle and Avoid Puking Over Bridge Railings." (Title needs some work.)
The neatest one I took was 150' long and is pulled across a small stream by a cable.

Sounds good! Great price, too. Thanks for checking it out.

Bikerchk 31st May 2007, 02:09 The ferry sounds awesome and I would use the savings from the Ferry price to pay for the story from SD as to WHY he loathes bridges...
SteveK 31st May 2007, 02:34 The ferry works for me. Looks to be a better scenic route too. Friday will be a long ride 345 miles from Columbus to Niagara Falls. All payment pounding. Let me know if anyone wants to meet up along the way Friday. Also where we are going to meet up at Niagara.

All sounds good.. I was referring to Lake Rd between Webster and Sodus Bay. That is a nice ride, and Sodus Bay has the outdoor restaurant deck and ice cream etc., and the beach at the lake. But that would be if time permits. 104 is faster.
canroc 31st May 2007, 03:14 I also like the idea of taking the ferry.

Thanks, I was hoping I could meet up with you and/or Mr and Mrs OTD. Wasn't sure when you would be heading east. Since It will take about 2hrs for me to get up where you will get onto I71 or I90.
As the date gets closer just let me know what your plans are. I am taking the Friday off and the rest of the following week.
Shark Doctor 1st June 2007, 00:56 SteveK I will meet up with you and ride up to Niagara- Mr and Mrs OTD will probably join us
I'll prob roll in the night before and join up with OTD/Dar and y'all and ride across with the pack.
I assume the plan will be to ride through to Buffalo on Friday as the thread has proposed?

Danny3nose 1st June 2007, 01:02 Shark, are you the itinerary guy for this trip?
Shark Doctor 1st June 2007, 01:11 Shark, are you the itinerary guy for this trip?
Not really. It appears somewhere back in the thread, but sure looks like fun. You and Joe gonna go?
I guess it plays out something like this: (and anyone should feel free to correct this!)
Thurs - head to Cleveland (for some of us)
Fri - head to Buffalo from Cleveland.
Sat - head into Canada via lake roads leading to a ferry in NY for crossing to Kingston, Ontario.
Sun - back through Ontario, maybe some crossing at Buffalo, some others heading through Ontario and maybe catching the ferry across the lake (Erie) to Sandusky.
Mon - home for those who don't go all the way home Sun.
Don't know who all is going. haven't heard much of anything from most of the Canadians ('cept Casper), so don't know how many "regulars" will be aboard. (Hope they ALL will be!!!)

Doc, love the way you set the intenery for the ride and what more need to be said?
Everyone have there cell phones where they can be heard and we'll give 10 min. notice that where coming through just fall in somewhere.
Aug 10th we get to see Bikerchick big twins :D :D :D
on edit> Iron Mick is going, he just not been told yet. LOL
Shark Doctor 1st June 2007, 15:43 Though still two months 'til the trip, we will need someone to scout out Beefalo to find a place to stay Friday night and someone to find quarters for Saturday night in/around Kingston. Also will need good restaurants to get together in both cities. The "ideal" find would be a place that has a small separate room so we could be a little isolated and not bother other folks...
Motel doesn't have to be particularly elaborate, but not a dumpster dive either.
Who would volunteer for NY and who for Canada?
(OTD: I think Mick is "in" for this trip, too. Haven't heard from Steve and Joan, but Mick could rattle their cages if necessary.)
olderthandirt 1st June 2007, 23:05 I-90 East to Rochester turn left cross river turn left.
Food? theres a Timmys on every corner

What do you think?
If we have a head count I can call and see if they will give us a discount
Bikerchk 18th June 2007, 17:52 Here is something else we can do while we are in Kingston:

olderthandirt 20th June 2007, 18:02 Just came back from Canada and the exchange rate is 4%, not very favorable
Plus they have the GST tax and other motel taxes. a room that was $99 actually cost $122 american.
I checked that link and the price was $42 per person or $112 for 2 people. So :censor
We need to find a small mom and pop motel that excepts cash :D or look into a a block of rooms with a great discount. Or If the Super 8 is all good with everyone I can find another motel
BTW-- Cleveland to Buffalo took 3:40 to ride on I-90
Also just stayed in Batavia NY which is approx. 20 east of Buffalo and a king room cost $50 for the nite at a Best western
We need some reservations soon as rooms will be hard to get and cost a premium if we wait much longer. The Niagra Falls tourist crowds will be in full swing at that time.
debster 20th June 2007, 18:15 Also just stayed in Batavia NY which is approx. 20 east of Buffalo and a king room cost $50 for the nite at a Best western

olderthandirt 20th June 2007, 18:48 For all those coming from points west we could ride into Rhochester for the nite and stay at Motel 6

Shark Doctor 20th June 2007, 21:10 I think Mike and I (and maybe one more) will ride to Cleveland the night before, then ride with you and Dar, if she has the time off (and Danny & Joe?), to Rochester (or wherever).

We would have to meet Steve and could do that at the ponderosa in brunswick and then hit the freeway north to cleveland and meet Danny and Joe and head west on
I- 90
Maybe bikerchick could meet us someplace along I-90 and I think that would get the whole western contigent heading east.

Your plan for meeting up with everyone sounds good.
We need to get some input into this thread. Everyone go walkabout?
Bikerchk 21st June 2007, 02:38 what the heck is walkabout?
Shark Doctor 21st June 2007, 02:45 what the heck is walkabout?
Checked out.
Comes from Australia where disappearing for awhile to find oneself is common and natural. It has come to mean roughly the equivalent of AWOL, or where the hell is everyone?!
(With apologies to our friends from Down Under who could better clarify the original meaning!)
Bikerchk 21st June 2007, 02:48 OK I got it- maybe we just have to punt with our lodging- another idea is that Gananoque is very close to Kingston- should we look there for cheaper lodging
Hey OTD good catch on the room rates!
2wheeltodd 21st June 2007, 02:51 I would like to join the ride someplace on the US side. When the itinerary is finalized and posted I'll be better able to say where. I would likely pick up the group in the Rochester area and go as far as Watertown. (That is if the ride goes counter clockwise).

canroc 21st June 2007, 04:11 There are plenty of motels along highway 2 through and near Kingston, similar to the types we stayed at in Delhi. I have stayed there a few years ago. The trick is in finding these on the Net.

Trouble is the one I picked up expires at the end of June. But they have a Days Inn listed in Kingston for $69 a nite singe or $79 a nite for a double
The # is 613-546-3661 if anyone from the area wants to give them a call and see if they will honor the rates for Sat. nite the 18th
Then we need one more room for sun. nite around Buffalo or between Buffalo and Erie
debster 21st June 2007, 14:29 I can meet up with everyone in Rochester Saturday a.m. (I'm about 50 minutes west of there.)
debster 21st June 2007, 14:36 The 18th??? I thought this run was the weekend of the 11th! Is it really the next weekend?
Shark Doctor 21st June 2007, 15:02 Aug 10-14 will be a ride around Lake Ontario, Anyones invited to join, on any bike.
This was the first quote in the thread. I thought this was still the date as well...
Did it change?
Bikerchk 21st June 2007, 15:28 I think OTD has been out in the sun too long! He has his dates mixed up in August- it is the weekend of the 11th and 12th

debster 27th June 2007, 23:34 A friend of mine told me about a couple motels in the Rochester suburbs. This one on Rt. 104 starts @ $38/night (Spencerport is 5 mi. east of Rochester):

This one in Webster starts at $37.72/night (9 mi. NE of Rochester):

Just wanted to pass the info along.
Bikerchk 28th June 2007, 21:04 Thanks Debster!!!!
olderthandirt 1st July 2007, 16:15 The time is soon approaching for departure so we need some confirmations on who is DEFINATLY going to make the ride.
And anyone from michigan or Ohio whos interested in a differnt route home its possable that we can still book the ferry across lake Erie from Leamington Ont. to Sandusky Oh.
That would eliminate the buffalo route on the return trip. We could stay in London ON. for the nite and visit with Steve and Mick :smoke
Friday nite arounnd Rhochester ferry over to Kingston on saturday nite and find motel there and London for Sunday nite. We could then ferry across the lake on Monday and go are seperate ways from there.
Thoughts, comments?
olderthandirt 1st July 2007, 16:57 A quick note to anyone interested, the ferry across lake erie still has room for a few bikes and departs Kingston at 10:00 AM monday morning for Sandusky.
If your interested you should make reservations ASAP as they do book up fast in thwe summer.

I'm in for the ride.
We need to hear from our Canadian friends... Where are y'all? I know the Sportster "Bruce" ride is this week. How about chiming in when you get back so we know if y'all are joining us when we cross.
IronMick?
Force50?
Casper?
Pretty soon we'll need to know for sure who will be joining so we can make plans that consider everyone's thoughts.

SteveK 1st July 2007, 21:34 I am in for sure. Not sure about the ferry crossing on Monday morning. Isn't that a pretty long ride Monday morning from London to Kingston?
What is the number to book a spot on the ferry?

Mapquest says 105 miles - 2 hr 5 min.
Should be an easy run.
Ferry leaves at ? (noon?)?

If its noon that would be easy. I thought olderthandirt posted a departure time of 10am. That would be getting on the road by 8am, or even before. Certainly can do, but we would need to get up and get on the road.
I am up for the ferry if there will be a group going back through Canada. Let me know and get me the phone number to book the reservation. I am taking Friday and the next week off, so I have the time :)
debster 2nd July 2007, 03:22 I'm in.
I'm thinking I can meet everyone in Rochester for breakfast on Sat. morning & ride with the group from there. I'll be cutting off to complete the Ontario circuit south toward Buffalo instead of going west to London with the MI/OH folks.
Are we just going to just wing it & follow whatever roads hug the lakeshore, and stop for gas/meals wherever along the way?
Bikerchk 2nd July 2007, 16:27 I'm in for the ride and for the ferry- Thanks for the VM OTD- can you book me please? Thanks!!!

Okay here is where I got confused... The Kingston ON ferry were is the US departure point for this ferry? This would be for Saturday at 10am? What number can I call to book this ferry?
Also what is the number to book the ferry ride from Leamington ON to Sandusky OH? This would be for Monday around noon? What number can I call to book this ferry?
And are these the correct ferry crossing dates and times?
Thanks,
Steve

A slight mistake: the ferry to Kingston needs no reservation; we'll go when we get there.
The ferry from Leamington to Sandusky leaves at 1000. Phone number is 800-661-2220 for reservation for Monday the 13th... We'll have to leave London EARLY - 6 a.m. or so - to make the one hour before departure deadline. REMEMBER YOUR PASSPORT OR ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE!!!
As far as I know, you, Mac, Nancy, Mike (a friend of mine), and I will be crossing.

Steve, from the sounds of it you're wanting to go around the lake clockwise -- there isn't a U.S. ferry departure; you'll be riding the ferry back into the U.S. like we did on the Lake Erie run.
We're going around Ontario counterclockwise. Ohio to Buffalo to Rochester to Kingston, & west thru Canada, etc. (At least that's my understanding -- correct me if I'm wrong guys!)
Never mind, Steve, I read your note wrong. :doh :doh

Shark Doctor 3rd July 2007, 15:35 OK. I think this is fleshing itself out a bit more. Here is what I think is happening:
THURS - Michigan riders (and anyone else interested) ride to GENEVA, OH for the usual HoJo.
FRI - Mac & Dar, SteveK, and Nancy (and others?) meet us in Geneva and we ride to Rochester, picking up others (Danny? Joe?) en route. Overnight at the FRIENDLY MOTEL.
SAT - pick up Debster, Oakies (?), Canroc, and others (?) and ride toward east end of Lake. Catch the ferry and cross to KINGSTON where (hopefully we meet up with Canadians). (NOTE: we need a motel in Kingston),
SUN - ride to ???. Some will cross and go home via Buffalo. Some will go to London for the overnight. (NOTE: we (Mac, Dar, Carol, and I) stayed at a good motel in London last summer and I can look that info up if folks are interested?)
MON - ride to Lake Erie and take ferry across to Sandusky, then all head their own way home...
Sound close?
-Jeff
debster 3rd July 2007, 15:53 That sounds like an excellent plan to me.
I even know where the Friendly Motel is, so I can ride there Sat. morning and join everyone for breakfast.
Oakies won't be on this trip -- he'll be in Watkins Glen for the races.
olderthandirt 3rd July 2007, 18:01 I have 5 rooms reserved at the Friendly Motel for Friday Nite. ! double and 4 singles with double beds.
I'll be using 1 room, Jeff will take 1, Mike will take one and Nancy will take one
That leaves 1 room open for Steve if he wants it.
Mick its up to you and Steve to get your lazy azzes down to Kingston and "guide" us to London where we will be spending the nite being entertained and fed the best Canadian meal by ya'll.
I would like to place an order for 8, 1-1/2 # porter house steaks, baked potatoes and fresh garden vegetables.
I want to thank you in advance for the meal and your hospitality
Edit> Jeff make the reservations in London for us if you would please.

PM me if I need to change any of this... and who else needs a room?
I am assuming Mac & Dar, Mike, SteveK, Nancy, and I. Anyone else?

SteveK 4th July 2007, 00:24 The reservations at the Friendly Motel Friday night and Comfort Inn Saturday night are both fine with me.

Don't forget me.
I'll either met you guys east of Rochester somewhere along Lake Road or maybe I'll stay at my parents Friday night and come to Spencerport with Debster (they live about 5 miles down the road from her). I'm only going as far as the ferry then head back home from there Saturday
What time are you all leaving Spencerport Saturday morning?
Gazza
debster 4th July 2007, 04:35 You're certainly welcome to cruise with me to Spencerport if you decide to go to your parents. It'll be great to finally meet you! Will you be finished with Dog Breath by then?

Mac, here's a post from Shark Doctor about the Kingston ferry:
I talked to them this afternoon. No problem getting on the ferry: just show up. No reservations required (or taken!). Can easily handle up to 50 bikes!!! $7 for the ride. No tie-downs necessary (as some of us know, they can be required by some ferries). He said the island and Kingston were biker-friendly.
Shark Doctor 20th July 2007, 01:42 SteveK - Friday is the 10th!!!
HoJo in Geneva for Thursday night: 440-466-1168...
Mike and I will be there.
They have only a few rooms left, so book soon if that's where you'll stay. Let us know so we can all have dinner together.
Mac- will you and Dar be coming to dinner?
-J
SteveK 20th July 2007, 03:45 Booked a room at the HoJo for Thursday night (Aug 9th). Since I work Thursday I wont be leaving Columbus until around 6pm, so I doubt I get in till around 9pm.
olderthandirt 20th July 2007, 17:20 Mac- will you and Dar be coming to dinner?
Planning on it, my niece lives real close and has suggested some good restaurants that we could eat at. But Dars working so we won't get there till about 7:00-7:30
Is C and B along for the ride?
Rumble 20th July 2007, 18:33 Suggestion for dinner in Rochester: Dinosaur Barbeque - the bikes will fit right in.

As far as I know, we're winging it in Kingston.
I reserved 4 rooms at COMFORT INN in London, close to where we stayed last year. I think I booked for Mike, myself, Mac and Dar, and Nancy and Deb (sharing). If we need to alter any of that, let's do so. Just let me know and I can add more rooms to the reservations I already have, one for you, and one each for Nancy and Deb if they don't want to share. Anyone else? Let me know soon so we don't get shut out.

Only 2-1/2 weeks to go!!!

RATES: (these are individual rates; we could do better on a group rate, but since we are ABSOLUTELY clueless on how many are joining, a group reservation is ridiculous!)
I have maps for all of these:
RATES for a queen size or two double beds (tax not included in the rates below):
-Best Western: $129.50
-Holiday Inn: $209
-Highland Motel 5: $74 for a dbl bed; $79 for 2 dbl beds
-Super 8: $85.50 (either a single or a dbl)
-Comfort Inn: $109 single; $119 dbl
-Thriftlodge Kingston East: $89 single; $114 dbl
There are others, but you see the trends.
Highland Motel 5?
Better let me know pretty quickly so we can either all book individually or try for a block if any of these seems appealing...
-Jeff
Shark Doctor 25th July 2007, 15:01 MAPQUEST says London is 276 miles from Kingston via the 401.
Just FYI.
Danny3nose 25th July 2007, 15:16 I wish I could make this run... Sadly I will have to work :( Hope you all have a great time, ride safe!
Shark Doctor 25th July 2007, 22:55 OK. I went back through everything and this is what I have put together... Correct this and I'll keep revising until we're ready to go.
================================================== =====
THURS - Michigan riders (and anyone else interested) ride to GENEVA, OH for the usual HoJo: 440-466-1168.
================================================== =====
FRI - Mac & Dar, SteveK, and Nancy (and others?) meet us in Geneva and we ride to Rochester, picking up others) en route. Overnight at the FRIENDLY MOTEL (4670 Ridge Road West, Spencerport NY 14559; (585) 352-3785). MAC: "I have 5 rooms reserved at the Friendly Motel for Friday Night: 1 double and 4 singles with double beds. I'll be using 1 room, Jeff will take 1, Mike will take one, and Nancy will take one. That leaves 1 room open for Steve if he wants it."
Suggestion for dinner in Rochester: Dinosaur Barbeque ("Rumble").
ROUTE: (Gary): "Scenic for Western NY would be head up from Buffalo to Lewiston along the Niagara river, then take Rt 18 to Rochester. Then 104A and Rt 3 at the east end will let you see some water."
(Canroc): "Taking the scenic route along 104 and Lake Rd will still get us to Kingston Ontario for Saturday night." "I was referring to Lake Rd between Webster and Sodus Bay. That is a nice ride, and Sodus Bay has the outdoor restaurant deck and ice cream etc., and the beach at the lake. But that would be if time permits. 104 is faster."
================================================== =====
SAT - pick up Debster, Canroc, and others (?) and ride toward east end of Lake. Catch the ferry and cross to KINGSTON where (hopefully we meet up with Canadians). Ferry goes from Cape Vincent to Wolfe Island and then a FREE Ferry from Wolfe Island to Kingston. No problem getting on the ferry: just show up. No reservations required (or taken!). Can easily handle up to 50 bikes!!! $7 for the ride. No tie-downs necessary (as some of us know, they can be required by some ferries). He said the island and Kingston were biker-friendly. LODGING STILL TO BE DETERMINED, but possibly the Highland Motel 5 : $74 for a dbl bed; $79 for 2 dbl beds. No reservations yet.
(NANCY): Here is something else we can do while we are in Kingston: August 10-12:
-20th Annual Kingston Sheep Dog Trials: Over 100 of North America's top trial competitors will celebrate the 20th annual Kingston Sheep Dog Trial, Canada's largest Sheep Dog Trials. Trials run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The event offers a variety of side attractions (Birds of Prey demos, Sheep Shearing demos, the Time Bandits Canine Games, Jungle Cat World, Bear the Tinker, to name a few), food concessions, a craft and artisans fair, kids activity area and much more:
-Abrams Brothers Concert at noon on Friday, August 10.
-Location: Grass Creek Park: Tel: 613-546-4291 ext. 1706
================================================== =====
SUN - ride to London (MAPQUEST says London is 276 miles from Kingston via the 401). Some will cross and go home via Buffalo. Some will go to London for the overnight. Five rooms at the London Comfort Inn... unfortunately not as cheap as Mac found: $90. All have queen size beds, non-smoking. I can change any of this if anyone so wishes. MON - ride to Lake Erie and take ferry across to Sandusky (Mapquest says 105 miles - 2 hr 5 min.), then all head their own way home...
SteveK 26th July 2007, 01:32 I will be staying Thursday night at the HoJo in Geneva. Just to long of a ride in the morning to then continue on into NY that morning. Should arrive in Geneva around 9pm.
SD - thanks for making the reservation in London. I will take the other room at the FRIENDLY MOTEL :)
debster 26th July 2007, 01:58 Nancy may be staying with me on Friday night. I'll PM her and get her to confirm. You may not need 1 reservation at the Friendly Motel.
Sounds like an excellent plan so far!
You may want to reconsider not taking the Lake Ontario State Parkway. It's only from Kendall to Hamlin Beach that you feel the seams in the concrete. I've been riding the bike on it regularly, and it's not THAT bad. (Or maybe I'm just used to it. LOL) It's MUCH worse in a car or truck. The only reason I bring it up is because you can see quite a bit of the lake on it.
The Highland Motel 5 in Kingston sounds good to me. I'll also confirm with Nancy that we're splitting a room Sat. night.
Nice job, Jeff!
olderthandirt 26th July 2007, 23:22 J
were joining you and Mike for dinner thursday eavning. My niece lives there so I won't be staying at the Ho-JO I'll be staying FREE at her house. She knows some good places to eat so we might want to go to another reasterant instead of the usual. Nancy can ride with us on Friday morning if she's not already in NY.
Let me know if I need to cancel a reservation for the Friendly Notell
If the canadians don't chime in soon I have a plan to take over Port Dover bike week and americanize it. Then it would be fun :D
Nancy you want to ride to Geneva with me and Dar let me know and we'll me you on our way there.
Shark Doctor 27th July 2007, 01:42 OK. So it's no secret that I have a problem with bridges... And the Thousand Islands bridges are actually the cause of this (I would elaborate if I was sufficiently wasted!).
FOLLOW-UP:
Some friends - Shark Babe and others - knowing my fear of bridges, commissioned a local artist to do a caricature, and here follows his work. Quite nice image of the Ultra and pretty good likeness of my "good side" as well! Check out the sharks under the Mackinack Bridge! :laugh
BTW: there is a name for this condition:
Gephyrophobia
Gephyrophobia: (JEF-eer-ah-FO-bee-ah) An abnormal and persistent fear of crossing bridges. Sufferers of this phobia experience undue anxiety even though they realize their fear is irrational. Their fear may result partly from the fear of enclosure (claustrophobia) or the fear of heights (acrophobia). Phobic drivers may worry about being in an accident in busy traffic or losing control of their vehicles. High bridges over waterways and gorges can be especially intimidating, as can be very long or very narrow bridges.
Fear of bridges is a relatively common phobia although most people with it do not know they have something called "gephyrophobia." However, the derivation of the word "gephyrophobia" is perfectly straightforward (if you know Greek); it is derived from the Greek words "gephyra" (bridge) and "phobos" (fear).

We're gonna have to get you wasted so you'll tell us the 1000 Island bridge story....

Shark Doctor 28th July 2007, 16:14 Though many of our Canadian friends will not be participating in the entire run, we will join up with many of them from London once we leave Toronto Sunday for an escort via back roads to London (the Sportster Club has a ride that day). In phone conversations and PM's with with Steve ("Force50") and Mike ("IronMick"), we have agreed to stay in touch and pick a spot to rendezvous after Toronto. Once we arrive in London and check in, the plan will be - hopefully - to have dinner together that evening.
Shaping up!
Make sure to check this thread often as we are fast approaching time to ride. Still haven't heard from many in NY as to whether they will ride for a segment or simply join us for dinner or breakfast.

Bikerchk 30th July 2007, 18:29 I'm good with all the plans so far! Sorry to have been so quiet (me???) but we just got back from a week of riding in WV!
meemabeepa 30th July 2007, 22:04 Just logged in; been in Nepal for 10 days. I'd like to join you, but must attend a memorial service in Buffalo on Saturday. I'm new to the forum; would like to know of future runs in the WNY area.

Gary 1st August 2007, 04:19 I'd like to meet up with the ride along the way on Saturday. I'm not going to
stay at my parents on Friday night like I thought I might last time I posted. If
it would be okay, maybe I could meet you folks near Wolcott. There's a
McDonalds and a gas station right on the corner of 104 and Whiskey Hill Rd in
Wolcott that I imagine you'll all be riding by between 11:30 and noon. I can
be there at 11:30 waiting.

Gary 1st August 2007, 04:48 Oops, Debster just said "only a week away"... I had the wrong weekend in my
head. I've been trying to juggle a buisness trip around a few days in either
direction and finally cleared this Saturday up, but that's the wrong week. I'll be
flying home on the Saturday the 11th while your all riding.
Debster gave me her cell number, If I can get home early, I'll give her a call and
try to meet up with you folks. Otherwiase I'll be waving to you from the air as
my plane is landing :(

I need to hook up with the group Saturday somewhere (Rochester area). Saturday will be my only day, so I don't plan on going much further than Watertown or thereabouts.
Debster, where are you going to be in the am?
Casper 4th August 2007, 04:13 Sorry, kids; I'm a confirmed scratch. I'm presently house-sitting, and the owners return that weekend. Since I have their house keys, I sort of have to be here to let them in.

SteveK 5th August 2007, 04:00 The time is near :)
canroc 5th August 2007, 15:46 Unfortunately I cannot make it for this run. I was hoping to ride with you all but a teacher/parent/student bbq is planned for Saturday of which my family wants to attend. As well we have a family reunion on Sunday.
Hopefully you get some guidance on the ride through Toronto, unless you are planning to take the 401 right through.
A nice stop on the way if taking the the 401 is at Mackie's Harley in Oshawa. It is opened on Sunday from 12 - 4pm. There is a Tim Horton's at Thickson's Road and Champlain just off the 401 on the way there. http://www.mackieharleydavidson.com/contactDirections.html
Have fun on the ride. See you next May.
cantolina 5th August 2007, 16:09 Looks like it'll be a day-trip for me....on Saturday...
I'll keep an eye on the itinerary and figure out a place to join up....Any planned fuel stop might be good?
debster 6th August 2007, 02:53 Now is the time, people, to tell me that getting through Toronto by myself will be a piece of cake!! :yikes
Bikerchk 6th August 2007, 13:51 What time will we be rolling out of Ho-Jo's on Friday AM? About 9am?
debster 6th August 2007, 22:33 Are we going to meet up in the Chat Room this week to iron out any remaining details, like arrival/departure times, meet-up spots?
Shark Doctor 6th August 2007, 23:53 I guess we should. Wednesday night (I leave Thurs)? 8:00 p.m.?
We seem to be pretty much on our own now that almost everyone has pulled out... Friday from Geneva we'll follow a bit of the route we follow in May. The critical leg seems to be Saturday, from the Friendly Motel in Rochester to Kingston. Cantolina may be aboard for the day trip and maybe he and Deb will lead. Otherwise we'll just make it up as we go, probably along the Lake shore to the ferry.
Mac (Olderthandirt) will be back from Sturgis in plenty of time (I just got off the phone with him, and he'll be leaving tomorrow (Tues) to return.
Sunday we'll get through Toronto and meet up with the Sportster Club (Ontario) for the ride to London. I'm still trying to work out the place with Steve (Force50).
Bikerchk 7th August 2007, 01:30 I think I am going to branch off Sunday and go with Deb around Toronto rather than do the Leamington ferry or whatever the name of it is 10 miles west...us girly girls have to stick together and I wouldn't wish riding through Toronto alone on anyone (I am hoping Casper will meet up with us and show us the hot route through that town....)

Wont we all be going through Toronto in some form or fashion? We are going around lake Ontario counter clockwise, correct?
The chat room Wed @ 8pm sounds like a good idea.

Blazenontario 7th August 2007, 17:05 FYI
The easiest way to get through Toronto is the 407 toll road you can take it across the top of TO with significantly less traffic and follow it right to Hamilton for those not going to London or get off on the 401 exit prior to that to London. I did this 2 weeks ago and it is much better faster and safer IMO. The toll is billed to you by mail and I think it is about $15 cdn, I haven't received my bill from my trip yet, Well worth the price to avoid the problems of the 401. If I can afford it I will try and meet you around Kingston and ride back to London with you. Taking HWY 2 from Kingston is a nice, relaxing and scenic ride, you can pick up the 401 and 407 in Port Hope.
If I can't make it have a good ride.
Jim
Bikerchk 7th August 2007, 18:01 Casper won't be joining us; he's house sitting.
I thought they might be back on Saturday and being the gentleman that he is, he would come find us on Sunday....yeah, I'm dreaming I know!!!! Love ya anyways Casper!

Nope, you're not dreaming! Now that I know what's going on with this house/catsitting schedule (particuarly, when they're returning), I could hightail it out to Kingston and meet up with you guys Sunday morning and then ride back with ya's from there (if you want me to, that is). I don't know TO well enough to give you some magical, 'locals only' shortcut, but I'll gladly wade through it with ya! I just need to know roughly when you plan on leaving Kingston (and where you'll be staying).
As to Blazenontario's comment, the 407's certainly faster than the 401 or the Gardiner. Lake Shore is more scenic, but at that point in the ride, I'm sure everyone will just be looking to get the hell out of Dodge. There is a small matter regarding the toll billing on the 407, but I'll tell you in Kingston. ;)
Bikerchk 7th August 2007, 19:03 Woohoooooo you rock Casper! That will be fun to ride with you again. Can you make the chat tomorrow night? We could talk about Sunday departure times then (I really don't care- I don't have to be to work until Wednesday!)
Shark Doctor 7th August 2007, 19:14 I'll have a "Lake Ontario" Chat Room set up before 8:00 p.m. Make sure you know how to change into other chat rooms from the main room before then!!!

Maybe we can plan the ride away from TO in such a way that we ALL meet up with Steve and the Sportsters Club BEFORE y'all make the break for Beefalo and we head to London. That way you could at least say "Hi" before you head elsewhere. Maybe I can get Steve to join the chat tomorrow night. I'll call him and see where he had in mind to meet up.

This is a really fine idea SD- I would love to say hi to all those guys again- and rub my favorite beard!!! :smoke
Shark Doctor 7th August 2007, 21:07 Steve has proposed - in the most recent Sportster Club newsletter - that we meet the Club for lunch at Dundas, west and south of TO. Might be a bit of a push, but we should be able to make it. Here is a map just to give an idea... MapQuest says 205 miles. He then proposes a BBQ at his place in London, a mere 77 miles! Deb and Nancy: how about reconsidering Sunday night and a BBQ?

YES! I made them including a room for you (and Deb if you want to share, or I could add another). But I need to do something tomorrow.
I really hope y'all will consider extending to London!!!

Bikerchk 7th August 2007, 21:22 I hate to bail on Deb riding through TO by herself...I wonder if Casper will be able to accompany her or if she has flexibility in the amount of time she can take this weekend.
The idea of the BBQ sounds terrific though!

But we ALL have to ride through TO anyway, presumably together. Let's see what she and Casper have to say. I could make him a reservation, too, if he wanted to head over to London if his house-sitting chores will be done... Just have to add or cancel by tomorrow since we leave here Thurs early a.m. to get to Geneva.
debster 7th August 2007, 23:41 I like the idea of meeting the Canadian contingent in Dundas -- it'll be great to see them again!
Casper, glad you can meet up with us on Sunday. Yea!
I don't think I'll be able to make it for a London BBQ -- I have to pick the dog up from the kennel on Sunday night. They were pretty booked when I made reservations for her 3 weeks ago, so I doubt they have space for an extra day. I'll call them Wed. and check though. I'll know for sure on Wed. whether London is a yea or nay.
I better start packing! LOL
Bikerchk 8th August 2007, 01:08 Cool Debster! Let's see what we can work out- SD says I already have a room reservation so we can split the room if that works for you!
FORCE50 8th August 2007, 01:27 I'll be in the chat Wednesday at 8:00. Dundas is in the right spot for a meet whether you're going toward Buffalo or London. 2:30 pm will work for us leaving London at noon or leaving Kingston in the morning, depending on the route. The meeting place is Cook's Corner Bistro. Have a good breakfast to tide you over 'til 2:30 for a late lunch. It'll be worth it. The manager of the place has a Sportster and the owner's nephew has two, an iron and an evo. The ride back to London will be nothing like the ride through Toronto, like a different country. I have some steaks to have for supper back in London, should be back here by 6:30, we timed it last week.
Steve.

Bikerchk 8th August 2007, 13:25 Did you find out about the dog? Huh, did ya? Did ya?
Shark Doctor 8th August 2007, 13:55 We've had some crappy weather here lately and forecast for our ride tomorrow morning to Geneva looks like it might get a bit dampish. Went to the Tigers game last night and dodged the rain, but we might not fare so well tomorrow... (Tigers Win!).
CHAT tonight at 8:00! BE THERE!!!
Shark Doctor 8th August 2007, 16:29 I'm a little concerned that we may be lacking for "local knowledge" to serve as ride guides. So, here are the routes I'm suggesting for Friday and Saturday. Feel free to offer suggestions, etc. I've taken Saturday's route from what Gary and Canroc suggested with a little poetic license from my maps...
Fodder for tonight's chat room discussion.
===============================
FRIDAY: Geneva to Rochester (~215 miles)
Take 20 and 5 (familiar routes to Lake Erie riders) to Silver Creek (reservation fuel), then 5 to Buffalo where we'll take I-190 to I-90E, getting off again on 20. Following 20 east, we'll get off onto I-390 toward Rochester where we will exit (Exit 24B) and head west on 104 to the FRIENDLY MOTEL at 104 and 261.
==================================
SATURDAY: Rochester to Kingston (~211 miles)
We'll start on 390 to 590 where we'll exit onto 286 to 250. 250 will take us north to 104. Then 104A to Oswego, back onto 104 to New Haven, then 104B to Rt 3 then up to 189, 180 to Limerick and 12E into Cape Vincent where we get the ferry.
Bikerchk 8th August 2007, 16:55 The first two legs look great SD! You leadin? j/k!!!!
If we get to Kingston at a reasonable hour we might want to ride 28 miles NE to Gananoque. I will see if I can get a recommendation on restaurants from a friend who has spent a good deal of time in that area.

We actually don't have motel rooms at Kingston, so we can go anywhere and stay anywhere.
And, yes, I guess I'll be leading unless someone else steps up (shows up!).
Bikerchk 8th August 2007, 17:23 OTD could lead maybe...I know you like the sweep position- where the heck is he anyway????
Hanoverfiste 8th August 2007, 17:40 Was really hoping to make this. but we have a bit of a family crisis to deal with.. and my bikes not ready for the long hauls yet.... But, if theres an iteniary posted of meet points along the trip, I still may be able to pop in for a small part of the ride, a buddy is going the let me borrow his bike If I am all done with the family stuff..
Bikerchk 8th August 2007, 20:41 SD: Flash flood warning from 10 pm tonight til 10pm tomorrow night for all the areas you are riding through from Michigan to Geneva tomorrow- so please be careful!!!!
* THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN ARE LIKELY LATER TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY FOR MUCH OF THE REGION. MUCH OF THE AREA HAS SEEN FROM 1.5 TO AS MUCH AS 4.5 INCHES OF RAIN IN THE PAST DAY OR TWO...SO ANY ADDITIONAL HEAVY RAIN WILL LIKELY CAUSE LOCALIZED FLOODING TO DEVELOP.

Mac is on his way back from Sturgis. He expected to make it back with plenty of time to recover and make Geneva tomorrow night. I left him a phone message today, advising him of "chat" tonite. Also told him he could bunk here tonite if he was behind schedule and then ride to OH with Mike and I tomorrow. I'll prob lead, just to keep speeds subsonic and off the interstates!

Yeah. We've been watching. Could be a crappy ride to meet up in Geneva. If we have to park it for safety, we'll just figure out something else. I'll have a laptop along, so if we get beached, we'll advise.

Call Steve (Force50) and he'll chat with you. Then call me so we can figure out a meeting time and place. We thought that if we met you at the ferry in Kingston, that might get it done...

We're on "HOLD" up here in MI. A wall of water falling. Unknown when we'll get underway, maybe not 'til late today unless it gets even worse...

It suppose to hit along the lake shore here at 10:00-11:00 so you can hold off or head south to Rt. 30 and take 30 east. That will keep you south of the rain
BTW-- suns out here.

I think Force50 was going to call you about meeting up in Kingston.

Just looked at the radar -- Michigan is clearly the winner in the rain category! Sorry 'bout that. I'll get on my mocassins and do a little dance & see if I can clear it away for ya.
Bikerchk 9th August 2007, 14:02 OTD- I am going to leave my house and head up to Geneva about 6:30am tomorrow morning
I am amazed at your mileage on the return from Sturgis- you is crazy, Dude!!!

Looks like we'll need it. Radar for Toledo and Cleveland show it moving east, but we don't think we'll be leaving 'til after noon. Maybe head due south (as Mac mentioned) and then east, hopefully following the storm's tail...
NASTY weather up here. High winds are the real problem, though the rain is just too heavy to ride in (LARGE puddling).
[SIGH]
Bikerchk 9th August 2007, 14:17 That is a bummer to just sit and wait-I'm sure you were up early and ready to go! It looks like it is moving pretty fast though- so if you ride slower than the storm...you should be good!
Shark Doctor 9th August 2007, 14:25 ...so if you ride slower than the storm...you should be good!
Not likely!
We're talking about taking theTurnpike now, that's how desperate we're becoming! Still don't think we'll be leaving 'til after noon...
At least the forecast for the next five days looks good.

Holy crap! You rock!
If your butt's not iron, it's at least stainless steel!

Much more talk about Mac's butt and this thread will wind up in the SUPER OFF-TOPIC forum!!!
:D

It looks like you won't be able to avoid at least light rain today....
The Western New York area looks iffy but ok for Friday, FINE for both Saturday and Sunday, tho...

So... Are you riding Sat?
Bikerchk 9th August 2007, 16:27 I just looked at the radar for Albion Mi- looks like you should be able to shoot direct south and then turn east and be out of the rain for most of the ride (at least for the next few hours)
olderthandirt 9th August 2007, 16:36 Hold off till as late as you need to, from toledo to geneva is 2:15 min. on the turnpike.
Chick you still want the reservation for the ferry across lake erie or you comming home through NY?
Bikerchk 9th August 2007, 16:39 Chick you still want the reservation for the ferry across lake erie or you comming home through NY?
I don't know what I am going to do on Monday!!!! I really want to ride some of those NW PA roads but I need to check on mileage and times-
And I hate the thought of going through Buffalo by myself...

Let me know so I can cancel with enough time to take it off my CC ;)
Jeff,
Rains here NOW so you should be good to go anytime after noon and I can already see the clearing behind this band of clouds. Stay south and its not as bad, even if you hit rain its not storms, just rain.
Like a normal lake Erie ride :D

YUP!
We're leaving now... with any luck we should be in Geneva for dinner. You still coming over to your niece's? (Though I guess you better leave me a message on the cell since I won't see this thread again for some time!!!)? Maybe I'll call you as we approach the Cleveland area...
See y'all sometime...
Bikerchk 9th August 2007, 17:01 Ride Safe Jeff and Mike!!!!

I have to go thru Buffalo, too, albeit east instead of west -- maybe we can do it together until we need to split off.
olderthandirt 9th August 2007, 18:01 How much notice do you need?
Tommorrow by 10:00 AM
I just called and asked them
Bikerchk 9th August 2007, 18:03 Deb I thought you were going through Buffalo on Sunday?
debster 9th August 2007, 20:13 Deb I thought you were going through Buffalo on Sunday?
I am. Were you talking about Monday? After London?
Bikerchk 9th August 2007, 20:34 Yes I was talking about Monday-
I'm thinking if you are brave enough to do it by yourself, I should be too!!!
Bikerchk 9th August 2007, 21:06 OTD
I am taking the ferry Monday morning! Final answer!
olderthandirt 9th August 2007, 21:36 Just talked to Jeff and his bike broke down about 25 miles west of me. He's close to a harley dealer so I'm waiting on a phone call, as soon as I know whats going on I'll either pick him up or I ride out and join him for the rest of the ride.
BTW-- Tornado in the back yard.
2wheeltodd 9th August 2007, 22:03 Our usual plan is about 8:30 or so, + or - 30 min...
I'll try to be at the motel right at 8:30 Saturday morning.
Black & smoky gold XL1200 C.
olderthandirt 9th August 2007, 22:04 UPDATE
Jeffs bike is now back to life and him and Mike are heading east slowly. I'll be joining them when they get a little closer and were leaving the back rds. for rt. 90. I just need to convice them we need to make up time. We will make Geneva tonite.
A little rain, a break down and a small tornado can't stop the ride
debster 9th August 2007, 22:32 Buffalo isn't bad for getting through. Mostly it just depends on the time of day. Rush hour sucks!
