Guess I'll be the first to start a thread. I'm interested in a possible group buy for progressive shocks. Anyone else?

Trout
14th April 2005, 22:26
Your title says 04+. You may as well include the 03- bikes too, since the Progressive part numbers are the same.

Group buy or not, it's tough to beat the prices on Progressives at Jireh Cycles.

JetEngineMech
14th April 2005, 22:38
Yeah, I would. Like Boomhauer, er I mean, Trout said, if the price will beat what we can find ourselves. Also, would we all have to get the same model shock?

I didn't want to proceed with anything until someone cleared up the questions I asked in this thread (http://www.xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5678)

Anyway, I don't need the 440 series. 412's in the 11" size are what I'm after. I've already got a white bros. front spring kit so I don't need a kit for the front.

412's in the 11" size are what I'm after. Yup, that's what I'd be after too. DCINPA, thanks for taking picking up the ball. I guess the first Q to ask them is if we all have to get the same thing to qualify for a discount. If we do, it's going to be tough getting enough folks together I guessin'.

I have a few companies working on group pricing, one large and well-known. IF they come through with some decent pricing, this group will be able to order anything they carry at the XLForum discount.

However, we will need to set up to the table and make the first group purchase (of course, if the price is right). So be ready to go... should know something tomorrow, maybe?

Sounds promising.

Please find out form your contacts if they will ship overseas and to APO (Army Post Office ) addresses. APO is a US address used by military, DoD Civilians, and DoD COntractors living overseas.

Will do.

The well-known company is Arlen Ness. Ness is a distributor for certain models of progressive suspension, but considering the quanity, they are looking into providing it for us.

Also, they make/carry a lot of other parts, as you folks are aware. I asked them to set up discount pricing for the XLFORUM on their catalog. They seemed very interested, but it will require approval, which is being done today or Friday.

Again, I don't want to get everyone's hopes way up, but it sounds promising and if the discounts are there, it should be a win for all involved.

I may be interested in a set of 440 Series I.A.S.® (http://www.progressivesuspension.com/440.html) 13½" Black if the price is right.

Additionally, I may be interested in Progressive Rate Fork Springs (http://www.progressivesuspension.com/springs.html) if available & if the price is right.

I had a pair of 418's with progressive fork springs on my last my last bike. I would'nt put on the rear shocks without doing the forks too. It will make all the difference in the world! You'll think your on a completely different bike. Anybody that's a true rider that really pushes there bike will just enjoy them that much more! :tour The fork oil should be changed about every 2 years at the most. That's one thing alot of people forget about.

G'day Bill.
Did you like your 418's? How much of an improvement over stock are they?

Yes I've already changed my fork springs a few months back and I replaced the oil with 15w and I'm really happy with the results so I'm lookin forward to gettin the back end of the bike up to scratch next :)

Doesn't look as if this is going anywhere anytime soon and I need to change my shocks, so I'm going to be ordering myself a set of progressive 11 inchers probably from easternpc on ebay. Hope it pans out for those of you who can wait it out.

I've been watching this thread and have been interested. But the truth is, this is an extremely difficult thing to actually pull off. Especially with so many variables in product desires.

I want this size, I want this style, etc.

In order to make it work, it has to be easy on the supplier. They can't be putting together three dozen different orders going out to three dozen different folks. Becomes too much of a hassle for them. Especially when we would be asking a "favor" by getting a discount.

The other problem is people not following through. I mean if I was a supplier, and I agreed to give a discount based on a group purchase, I would want some guarantee of the numbers involved. I get a request and work through the details and I'm told say 25 folks will be buying and suddenly there's only six actually buying and 19 excuses. That would also leave a bitter taste and likely ruin any future chance of another buy.

I believe in this idea but it has to be thought out and looked at from the seller's POV and not just a "get a deal" POV.

How do you get folks who say they will buy, actually buy?

If we had a timeline and a parameter of what choices one had, how about a relatively small deposit from each potential buyer... refundable if the deal fell through?

Very true...and unfortunately I've had an unexpected expense come up so I would have had to pull out if this group buy was up and running. :o

I still want shocks but will have to wait a month or 2 longer before I can afford them again.

Does that make me "excuse # 1" :laugh

Sorry folks, but I can't seem to get a distributor to follow up on thier initial replies. One (Ness) seem willingly and excited to get something goin', but when it came time to do it, they never called back. :censor

I will keep tryin' , but I can't promise results. Once again, my apologies...

We've done something similar to this on another website i visit, thing is, to get a list of people who are in, and maintain that list for all to see.
Someone is going to have to be a buyer. He fronts all the money, and everyone pays him back. It's the easiest way to do this. But the person fronting the cash can get screwed big time.
Someone could get a paypal account and have people give him the money that way. But you're going to end up giving more than required for the parts, due to paypal taking some.
Things like this are very cool, good for everyone concerned, but very difficult to pull off.

...what did you do to rit the 160 tire on your 04+?

On my 04 it seems impossible to put in anything bigger than the stock 150 without serious mods...

(Ok, it's off topic, I know, I know...)

This would probably only work if we could deal directly with a manufacturer that was set up to deal directly with the public (credit card pay, shipping and receiving facility, etc.) as we did with SuperBrace. Unfortunately, Progressive only deals through distributors who sell to retailers, with big discounts at each step in the chain. It made sense for SuperBrace because they had a public sales mechanism in place and the group buy, no matter how many sold, went out at a lower discount than they would have to give their distributors, and so they made more money per unit (check their web site and you'll see they do group buys all the time on different models and manufacturers' bikes). In essence, they functioned as the single point of contact someone else mentioned earlier and collected all the money up front before they shipped (or made) anything.

Maybe one of Progressive's distributors has a mechanism set up that would allow this kind of buy, but I doubt it. Not enough volume to make it worth the trouble.

Sorry, I missed this post...
The tire just fit, nothing special. I had the dealer put it on. Metzler shows the 160 as an upgrade option for the 04.
