View Full Version : uh oh, help, Transmition leak
crackers 6th December 2004, 09:35 Help,
i just noticed this morning a little fluid patch on the concrete floor, nothing under the bike.
rode to work, and home again and check the bike.
it does have a little trans fluid under the cases, around, but not on the drain plug?
i checked the level of the fluid inside and it looks normal, maybe just a little on the lower side of normal.
has anyone who has an 04 model had any leaks yet?
mine is 6 months old with 12000 kays on the clock, and not expecting it to leak just yet.
it has been very hot here lately and i went for a long trip over weekend, could the gaskets melt or dissolve and leak?
the local dealership is 100km away from home and 150 from work.
its not a easy thing to drop the bike off on my way to work.
i am headed that way for work, in 1 week. i'll get them to check it out then.
cheers

SportsterBart 6th December 2004, 09:44 Crackers, check to see if the primary cover bolts are properly torqued down. I'd try that first, it's worth a shot. ;)

crackers 6th December 2004, 09:54 have done that,

stevo 6th December 2004, 12:19 Degrease it, wash it and dry it.
then have a look later
sportymark 6th December 2004, 14:29 Definately check the crankcase bolts for tightness. I've had a few bolts shake loose and I've only done 2000 miles!
By the way 12,000 kms in 6 months on Tasmania is pretty good going!
wabiker 6th December 2004, 19:20 have done that,

.....by any chance did you pull off any silicone/RTV streamers off the bottom of the engine....???
IronMick 6th December 2004, 22:06 My experience with m-cycle leake is the same as with the roof of the house - where you see it is not likely where is comes from. My technique with the scoot is to degrease as someone has suggested, then attach paper towel over the whole area, then go for a ride, being somewhat careful not to lose the paper towel.
crackers 6th December 2004, 22:44 i dont think there is a need to degrease it as it was just washed friday nite.
i keep the bike fairly clean anyway.
had another look this morning and it may be originating from under the starter motor area.
just rang the dealership and am awaiting a call from the head mechanic.
will let you know how it goes.
cheers

crackers 7th December 2004, 01:31 just heard back,
apparently the earlier models had a habbit of leaking at the alternator plug into the engine at the starter motor area.
he hasnt heard of it happening to an 04 model, but also hasnt seen an 04 model with as many kays as mine (11500km).
can tell me if the older models did leak much around the plug.
and how often it happened.
cheers

willprevale 7th December 2004, 01:43 it's also possible that the breather hose is leaving a dropping and I'd check all your hose fittings. Don't panic. It's probably a real simple problem.
crackers 15th December 2004, 01:32 heres the update to the problem.
cleaned and degreased the engine twice during the last 7 days since noticing the problem.
the leak had slowed down, though i might have ran out of fluid!
it apeared to be coming from the centre of the casing at the top, under the starter motor.
the dealer said he will look at it, and if thats the problem wont be able to fix it till after christmas. http://xlforum.net/forums/images/smilies/frown1.gif uh ohhh.
well dropped it in yesterday morning, showed him the problem.
sugested he pull the primary cover off, remove the starter motor, and check for leaks. he said thats exactly what he will do.
made me look like i know what im talking about http://xlforum.net/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://xlforum.net/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
i rang back about 4 hours later
the problem was the starter motor gasket. fixed and ready to go. http://xlforum.net/forums/images/smilies/clap.gif
it leaked to the centre of the casing and ran down the joint.
i asked before hand, if the problem was fixed could they replace the trans & engine fluids with syn3.
this being an extra, it cost me almost $180. http://xlforum.net/forums/images/smilies/yikes.gif
so all ends well, just a bit less in the pocket.
cheers

stevo 15th December 2004, 02:36 By the time I got there I'D need an oil change....and a few beers.
stevo 15th December 2004, 02:41 Mind you as it gets hotter up here...Tassie is lookin good :)
And I can work anywhere I'm a Fitter/machinist by trade with mining/construction and workshop experience as well as the bike and car engine recon side.
Basicly can do most things mechanical trade...... but prefer bike engine and tuning and custom work which is why that's what i do in my own shed.
Whatever else just pays the bills and means I don't have to deal with too many idiots in order to make a livin. BIG PLUS when ya been dealin with 'em for years....
crackers 15th December 2004, 03:30 its been unseasonally hot down here to.
up in the mid 20's :laugh

crackers 17th February 2005, 01:56 heres the final update.
at the next service they stripped down the starter and re-gasketed every joint.
a week later the trans oils started to piss out of the bike even more.
took it back monday night, lpicked it up tuesday night. all seem fixed now.
the problem.
the o-ring seal between the dry/wet side of the clutch on the starter motor was sliced (not all the way thru) in several spots.
after removing the o-ring they found metal shavings in the o-ring bed that had not been cleaned out before assembly. this was the way it came from the factory.
was told from the service guy "thats what you get somtimes when a japanese factory makes parts for the bike"
well all is fixed and now im happy, not more oil leaks on the concrete.
cheers

You forgot to bend over when they stuck it to you. LOL!
I had the same leak on my 04 1200C starter motor at around 10k miles. Also had a manifold intake leak that made alot of backfires and flames shooting out my pipes as I rode it to the stealer. I've got about 19,400 miles on her now with no other problems. I'm running the SE airkit with D&D pipes and 2.75 turns out the air mixture screw...she runs real good. Also been busy making my own custom fenders and paint job. Still masking flames hope to finish paint in a week or so. I'll post pics when done.

I've had my bike since late march last year which is longer than you've had yours and you already got a cuppla hundred kays more than me :cry1
I'm a bit embarassed about that...coz we have more good weather here in Vic than down there in rainy old Tassie :laugh :p :D
Glad ya bike's all fixed now matey :)
crackers 17th February 2005, 07:43 thanks gronk,
good to hear from ya.
yeah i ride to and from work on the bike
so i rack up around 2000 kays a month just in that.
let alone any playtime in between.
the only time i had second thoughts about riding was when it hailed.
not enuff to damage anything, but !@#$ it hurt getting hit.

markrumsfield 4th March 2005, 04:26 I have the same problem on my 04 but I still havent been able to get it fixed. My dealer has tried to fix it three different times, the first time they replaced the starter 0 ring, the second they just replaced the starter gasket, and this last time they replaced the alternator/stator assembly, because they thought the leak was coming from the stator plug. The damn thing still leaks. What a bummer. It has leaked since I bought the bike and the way it is looking it is going to be leaking as long as I own it. It is coming from the same place as it was on yours, underneath the starter, and then it works its way back along the left side engine case and down the backside of case and drips on the ground, not a lot but still leaking. Sure wish I could get my bike fixed but how many fricken times do I have to take it in...

crackers 4th March 2005, 04:37 thankfully the oring was the problem on mine.
next they were going to split the cases and reseal everyhting.
i had mine in 3 times
once was during a scheduled service.
it is a pain since i live 100kays from the dealership and work another 50kays away aswell.
hope all goes well with you.
cheers

markrumsfield 4th March 2005, 18:27 I am starting to wonder if the leak is still coming from the o ring and they just botched the repair.
