View Full Version : Speedometer debris/ needs cleaning
I need to clean some debris from under my glass that have accummulated. I took the back two screws off and slide the unit forward out of the mount. Do I have to remove all the wiring and connector nuts and will this allow the glass to come off? Thanks

The glass will not come out unless you remove the bezel. It's not designed to be removed, but you CAN pry it off if you're really careful. I don't recommend it though - it's really not designed to come apart. There's no other way I know of to get that glass off.

Thanks Chris:
I noticed that the black center piece on the needle fell off and is resting at bottom of meter. So your saying this is basically a throw away unit when this type of problem occurs? That stinks.

It definitely stinks, I agree. But it's designed as a sealed unit, not serviceable. I wish I were wrong. I have taken them apart in the past to install those silk-screened skins on them, and basically you peel the metal bezel off, then remove the glass, then the two screws on the numbered face plate, then install the silk screen thingy. Then you crimp the bezel back on. If you're good, it doesn't look super terrible. The trick is doing it face down on a soft cloth, then when recrimping, you need something that fits the bezel tightly, a big hard rubber ring, the press the speedo down into while you recrimp the bezel.
It's crude, but you have nothing to lose, right? If it gets screwed up, you needed a speedometer anyway. If you try it, take pictures. Maybe it's not as bad as I remember.

The speedometer is built this way to keep costs down and to prevent odometer tampering.
You can get the bezel off, and you can try to crimp it back in place, but unless you have the proper tools, it will never be right and it will look like crap.
If you can live with the turn around time you can send the speedometer to a place like North Hollywood Speedometer (http://www.nhspeedometer.com/).
