Got a few ideas I'm toying with, but need to know how successfull this is. I know you can do it (hell you can paint over ANYTHING if you want..), but how does it last? Does it scratch off easily, or would a few coats of clear prevent it? It would not be near engine heat...

Any ideas Gordy?

The paint job would not be very durable, as it would have a hard time sticking to the smooth chrome. I would scuff up the chrome first.

I've done it. It is just the same as anything else. Base coat wont stay put without proper clear coating. Candy colors over chrome are sweet. You can see your reflection through the paint.

So you reckon clearcoat the chrome, then colour, & clear again..? Would be going black, so don't think I'll pick up any reflection. And if I'm not happy with the result, you can just take it off with some thinners or whatever, right?

I have done it on a fair bit of my bike, both for paint and powdercoat...I just give them a light dusting with the bead blaster first.

Don't do it too hard or ya go thru the chrome...ya just want a light dusting to take the shine off and give the paint somethin to key to.

Mines been on there for years without any more chipping than would be considered normal on a race bike

Better still just drop it off or send it to Gordy and let him do it.

No on the clear, color, clear. Just a neat look with translucent colors. Light candy base with clear coat to hold the base on.

Paint will not stick to chrome unless you sand the chrome
seal it with a sealer than prime so you can sand it smooth
than paint it. Also a little bit of flex mixed into the paint will help
it stick real good if someone decides to bump into any of the parts
later on.

If you sand it very well and use a special groundcoat painters use for cars, etc. its ok and works.....

Hi Ya Hero

You will have to wet and dry the shine off the chrome then clean with degreaser or white spirit then it depends on what you are looking for in a finish. If your looking at a black or solid colour you could go with a spray can plasti-kote super enamel(from B&Q)is pretty good have it on the centre of my brake discs and it lasts. Or you can spray hammerite.

Otherwise you will need a primer, colour and clear. If you have access to an airbrush and small compressor (hobby unit will do) you can get a can of U-pol primer in a spray can from halfords, as for colour try Autoair water based colours - cheap, excellent quality and reasonably safe(you will need the airbrush and compressor for these ). You will also need a clear coat to finish off and once again Halfords have a clear in a can that will work ok on most areas of the bike.

You might want to check around your town for a shop that does chroming, they can unchrome just about anything for not a lot of money. It comes back as a bare metal, then you can prep it like any other piece.

I did this to an exhaust a few years ago, it worked out pretty well.

Yeah, unchrome it is the best value to make it. But if you have to save $, you can also choose the other way.
