So im planning a cross country trip on the scoot going coast to coast at least once starting NE the going south etc. Anyways i plan on camping out most of the time, more often then not theres national parks and recreation areas that i can stop and pitch a tent for $2 for the night or so. But my real worry is that at some camp grounds or if i decide to camp out in the wilderness im a pretty open target.

The evidence is all there for me to be a target, 1 motorcycle, 1 man tent, just passing through. The obvious odds are that im alone, and probably dont know anyone.

So the real question is, would you guys recommend bringing a small pistol along with me? Since there is little reciprocity as for as concealed weapon permits between states i dont know of a feasible way to bring it along unless i maybe pack it in a bag. Secondly knives are alot more legal in most states and can be fairly large as long as its sheathed.

So what are your opinions inputs and information that you guys can lend me? any input is appreciated!

Not sure about any where but Arkansas. You can have a hand gun as long as the clip is in a different location, preferably locked up. Like in a car the glove box.

A knife would be a must......

Do you have CHCL?

I have a concealed carry permit for Alabama, and it's reciprocal in 22 other states. I guess it depends on where you live and where you're traveling. If I needed protection, I'd rather have a gun than a hammer...

Here is what I would do. Get a concealed carry permit and then find out what states accept the permit you have. Then plan your trip accordingly so you stay in CC friendly states. Your gun won't do you much good with the clip locked in your underwear bag...

Probably your best bet is getting a CCW permit in your home state and keeping your piece unloaded in the bottom of your saddlebags while you're riding.

To be honest with you I have been riding for over 40 years and never felt a need for a gun unless I was someplace I knew I shouldn't be, probably doing something I knew I shouldn't be doing.

Agreed! Better safe than sorry. If you have to go into a state without a reciprocal agreement chances are you won't get caught but,.... you can always try to play dumb.

I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six.

Here in tx. you can carry without even the concealed carry permit, if you can prove you are traveling in more than a 3 county trip . Also if you pack away while riding and pull out to sleep with I don't think anyone would bother you. I carry 24-7 without a carry license. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Good luck on your trip you lucky fool.

This is what i was planning on doing although i do plan to hit more then a few states that dont have it. There's another thread in this section that has the reciprocity listed by state which is cool.

Do you guys think i would have trouble with it being unloaded and packed away in no reciprocal states? God forbid i do get pulled over technically its still gonna be registered, permitted, unloaded, with the ammo kept separate. I guess if i really want to be technical i could throw a lock on my bags which im probably going to do anyways.

As far as knives go im going to have one regardless im thinking a Ka Bar 7", has always been my favorite company known for quality. does anyone know any resources where i can find out about carrying that on my person, concealed or out in the open such as on my hip or ankle?

Check out the laws in those national/state parks you plan on visiting/camping in. I'm not sure but I believe you cannot carry any firearms in the national parks. As long as it's packed away in a safe place and your not being foolish with it I see no problems at all. Have a great ride. I think you'll find that 99.9% of the folks you run into will envy you and mean no harm. It's those damn 1%'s you have to watch out for!LOL.

Loaded firearms are now allowed in the National Parks as of this year (I think they reinstated an old law). Proposed by a republican & passed by a democratic party majority.

If you want to avoid the concealed debate, pick one of these puppy's up and loader 'er up with buckshot. If you want protection, I'd pick that over a handgun any day if it was an option.

Unloaded and cased would be legal in any state I imagine. As far as the knife goes, the laws on carrying knives are not nearly as strict as guns....Nobody has made the case that knives kill people yet...:)

I've had a Mossberg super convertible next to the bed for a couple of decades OO magnum loads. I haven't had to use it but I sleep better at night.

I know its not what you were talking about, but I carry a Surfire E2D flashlight around. :) It might come in handy on a camping trip too.

I think i may have found my solution, its a mace pistol that shoots pepper spray up to 25 feet per blast. All the benefits of a pistol sort of without the moral and ethical repercussions of possibly killing someone.

I'd opt for the light and shotgun, flash the shot gun before you blind them, you may not have to shoot.

a shot gun at close range is wicked for sure.

I'd rather have a gun than mace, just in case the bad guy(s) are drugged up enough they find the mace rather tasty ... or in case of large carnivorous 4 footed creatures that might just get pissed off at the mace.

A plus here in the southern US is that from Arizona (not the left coast) I can ride clear to the east coast and my concealed permit is recognized in all the states I would pass through.

FYI, that doesn't take effect until February 22, 2010, I believe.

I have been looking in to this for the same reasons

I just took the class for Utah, which is good in like 23 states?

BUT!!! the funny thing is, a lot of states have great open carry laws.Making it so you can just hang it on you belt and go.

And knives aren't something you can just hang on the belt and go.I wouldn't carry one with more than a 4" blade, and it would be a folder. Then it's just a "pocket knife".

The instructor told us to carry, with our gun,a kubaton, mace,THEN use the gun if necessary.
The other two make it so you tried to defuse the situation but had no other choice but to shoot.
And it could save you a lot on court fees

Now,in Nevada you can own a full auto gun,but in a couple cities they have "dangerous weapons" laws(No.LV) so you can't have a gun on you at all, within the city.Similar in Denver,I believe.

I'll stick to the reciprocity states and keep out of the rest.

Look at these sites to get some ideas on the laws.
Great links also.

http://www.opencarry.org/

http://www.carryconcealed.net/

Check out this map. With like 3 states CCP you can carry everywhere but the communist states of Mass,Cally,NY

Not legal to conceal in most any state.

Washington change the "weapons" permit to a "conceal carry pistol" permit for this reason.

Now there is some AR pistols out there that are kinda cool
OK VERY COOL;)
