View Full Version : Gyro stabilized mirrors?
nc5p 7th December 2004, 04:53 Anyone ever heard of gyro stabilized mirrors for motorcycles? Digital cameras have them, why not motorcycle mirrors? My mirrors aren't too bad at some speeds but at others you just see a blur. Also got to thinking that you might be able to attach three speaker voice coils and drive them from a 3-axis accelerometer (digikey.com has that stuff) to eliminate the vibrations. Maybe just two axis would work to eliminate the blur. You could cement the accelerometer to the back of the mirror and use amplifiers to null the vibrations out. Yes, I think about weird things but it comes from the weird work I do.

wickedsprint 7th December 2004, 05:52 I think instead of making our harleys more expensive, you should just put a 30 dollar webcam on your harley facing backwards, then you pay me a thousand dollars and I will call you when I see cars behind you.
sportymark 7th December 2004, 08:08 Some mirrors are worse than others, on some jap sports bikes I've owned you can only see your elbows - nevermind the vibration!
FastFwd 7th December 2004, 09:06 Sorry, nc5p, gonna have to do it like we always have. Weight the bars and turn ya head when ya want ta turn... :laugh Thinkin' outa the box is good though.
New Mexico is famous for weird work...can ya give us a clue?

TiBaal89 7th December 2004, 15:06 I've been working on an anti-gravity system for my bike so I can just glide an inch off the ground all the time. Think of all the problems that would cure! :smoke
xl1200r 7th December 2004, 15:18 nc5p,
You have a 2004! What are you complaining about! I have the same problem as you, blurry at certain engine engine speeds. At least you know that "something" is behind you, whether you know "what" it is or not. If I'm really interested at what it is, I can just grab the grips REALLY hard and the mirror clears up.

:werd
Both Japs that I have had, you can only see your arms. I have to put my arm out to see the cops behind me.
missyd 7th December 2004, 21:12 Add bar end weights and mirrors and the blurring and blocked vision is gone! ;)

I put my sporty mirror on my jeep and it viberates just as bad so I think its the mirror itself that is bad not the bike
stevo 25th December 2004, 01:52 Nothin like a Thousand $$$$ fix for a ten $$$$ problem.
Good to see someone is thinking outside the square, BUT ya havn't got too close to one of those test facilities in New Mexico have ya????
Ya buy a sporty for SIMPLICITY..... NOT to make it more complicated than a jap car
xllent01 25th December 2004, 03:34 Dump the stock mirrors in the trash, the stems are way
to long thats why you get the buzzing mirror effect.
Go out and buy a aftermarket mirror from drag, j&p,
or anybody else that have shorter stems on them.
The difference is like day and night. :yikes
