It appears that the requirement for passports to re-enter from Canada or Mexico by ground transportation may be delayed. You will remember that Jan 1 (2008) or thereabouts was to be THE date when a passport would be REQUIRED for cars and bikes (it already is a requirement for air travel, though just showing that you've applied for one will work for awhile). There is now apparently a bill in Congress that would delay that requirement further. The news report I heard mentioned a delay of about 17 months so that the passport backlog could be reduced, but the report was not clear whether that was 17 months from now, or 17 months beyond January.

I could find no reference to this bill in the House of Representatives, but I'll try and run this down since many of us travel together around the Great Lakes.

I should just get one anyway, looks like I'll need it sooner or later.

That's good news for me, since I really don't want a passport. I wish they'd come up with something different for use just on the North American continent. Maybe that would help with the passport backlog, too.

Thanks for the info, Shark Doc.
