I use it on my '03. It is a shorty filter. I don't think they offer it in the long version. You get better filtering, but the flow is reduced. Your best bet is to find the same filtering as this one but a longer version for better oil flow. I think amsoil or K&N might sell one. That's what I am going to do next time.

This 10 micron filter was developed for the Twin Cam 88 motor and has recieved a lot of bad publicity latley in American Iron magazine. Some people are doubting the wisdom of having this level of filtration, not sure of the specifics. As long as you change your oil and filter regularly I don't think there will be any problems.

I can look into this further (I work for an oil company).

Apparantly (after speaking to my mate) Harley do not recommend fiiting this filter onto Sporsters, although the catalogue is vague about this. This is because the oil pumps have been designed at a certain flow rate and if you change the filtration level it could cause problems at high rpm or mileage. I suppose they are refering to a smaller gauze which would restrict oil flow slightly.

Personally I think it unlikely any engine damage would occur but I certainly don't see an advantage in fitting this filter.

There is, however, a definate advantage in switching to a fully synthetic oil.

Hope this is of some help.

your right about the smaller guaze Sportymark. If you use that filter what will end up happening is that you will bypass the whole filter more often as the oil pump doesn't have enough head pressure to flow through the filter (due to the smaller openings in the filter).

Another good question is what pressure the bypass is set up for. If the 88 pump operates at that much more pressure would the filter bypass at a higher pressure too? Then maybe the sporty pump may not even make enough pressure to trip the bypass, then the fine gauze would restrict flow and bypass would not bypass causing bearings to starve for oil.. :yikes
I would not use one until these questions have been answered. Or better yet, I keep changing regularly with synth and a new standard filter of my chioce of manufacture.

I've been told by several HD parts people not to use the 10 micron filter on the Sporties. I'm sticking to the stock filters. I bought several from Chicago and at about $6 each they are more than half the price of my stock Suzuki filters.
