I lost a great friend last week...my buddy, Sid. We exchanged email messages on Tuesday and he sent me this pic. He was killed on Wednesday.

http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/831/Sid_Brookshire_g.jpg

MAJ Sid Brookshire, Operations Officer (S3) for 1-64 AR, 3 ID was killed during an IED attack in Baghdad on 20 JUN 07. He left a wife and two small children.

If any of you are Patriot Guard Riders (or if you're not) and want to attend his services, here is the information as I know it:

Memorial Service: 1400 on Monday, 2 July at the Richmond Hill First Baptist Church (where the girls go to school), in Richmond Hill, GA. It's on Hwy 144 at 9184 Ford Avenue. Take I-95 and get off on the Hwy at Exit 144. Go east and the church will be on the right. There will be a reception following, and childcare provided. Please call the church if you will need childcare. 912-756-2196.

Burial Service: Friday, 13 July at Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA with full military honors sometime in the afternoon (exact time to be determined). A reception will follow at Point Loma College.

Tree Planting Ceremony: Thursday, 19 July at Fort Stewart GA. This is a ceremony to honor all 3rd ID fallen heroes for the past month.

If any of you make the trip to Richmond Hill on Monday, I'll see you there. I'll be in an Army Class A uniform, HARRISON on the name tag.

Here is the PGR link: http://www.patriotguard.org/Forums/tabid/61/postid/561928/view/topic/Default.aspx

Sid lived on two wheels. He rode a BMW R1100RT like it was a part of him...across the U.S from Ft. Irwin, CA to Newport, RI and back-and-forth to work everyday.

Sid and I attended the Naval War College together in Newport, RI last year. We took motorcycle rides through RI, MA and CT...and we tipped back a beer or two. He was as fine an officer, gentleman, father, husband and friend as I've ever known.

Thank you, Sid...

-MAJ Kenneth "Dean" Harrison

Rip in Peace to an American Hero. Sorry for the loss of your friend and prayers to his friends and family. I will light a candle sunday.

From that picture he looks like on helluva guy , and I would imagine a handful in a fight.

I did not die

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.

Old Irish Toast

May you have food and raiment,
A soft pillow for your head,
May you be forty years in heaven
Before the devil knows you're dead.

You guys are great. Thanks so much for your support...to me, Sid's family, our troops and your country. Someday, history will clearly show he did not die in vain. I'm glad so many of you already get it.

I'm off for Savannah to attend the service...by way of Orlando for a day or two. I never wanted to ride the scoot more than on this trip, but I'm dragging the family along.

I'll pass your well-wishes to Sid's widow. Thank you, again.

Gee, that news comes right off the page and smacks you across the head.
Seeing a picture of a hero that has fallen... it rips your heart out.
It is very grounding… makes you stop and think about some of the
relatively silly things we sometimes spend precious time debating.
Our brothers are in harms way, so that we may sleep in peace
and so that our kids can grow up knowing a freedom not available
everywhere. I am Canadian, we have lost some of ours also in this
horrible battle. Usually on the news you hear a number.
Seeing the picture that was posted… such a fine looking person,
in the midst of life, taken away far too soon.
God give his family strength. and God bless all those who stand
in the face of the devil sometimes paying the ultimate price.
May his family know no more pain and sadness.

It is especially sad when anyone of our friends dies as a result of conflict. You and his family can take some comfort that he died in the service of his country. Very few of us can say that. I hope that his sacrifice and those of his fellow troops can result in a lasting peace that can be a memorial to their sacrifices. Amen
