View Full Version : Sturgis 2007 attendance thread

I'm going to try a poll to set up a list of names of members going to Sturgis this year. When you "vote" yes I am going, your name will be listed in the poll and everyone else going can find people to hang with and maybe ride up with.

I will try to organize some events while we are there. Nothing big but things like a ride or 2, watch some races together and meet up at the NRHS booth. Oh yea, and some beers.

Anyway, keep an eye on this thread for more info and if you aren't going you can vote no and bump the thread to the top.

bump,
I wish I could go, but I work at a school and it starts back up like 3 days after sturgis. Ain't no way they are gonna let me take off the week before school starts. Anyways, have fun and drink a few for me!

Same here, I would love to go but have other vacation plans this year. I'm hoping I can get there next year. It would probably be best if I had a few more miles of experience anyway.

My dad is planning to go with me when I can make it. He's never been on a motorcycle either. I guess he went through when he was long-haul trucking at one point but said it just wasn't the same.

For all that do go, have a blast!

The dates are between the 6th thru the 12th of August but a lot of people will show up as early as the 3rd and leave whenever.

In my mind the best way to enjoy it is to camp and you can get a site even after the rally starts so you don't have to worry about reservations. It looks like we have a small group growing from the midwest (IA IL so far) so if you are looking to hook up with a riding group you should be able to.

Went the first time in 74 and numerious times since including last yr.

If you never been there before get use to high prices for everything. All rooms in Rapid city will probably be booked and if your lucky enough to find one it will set you back $300 a nite for a Best Western. Rooms 70 miles away will cost $150 a nite.

The upside is its STURGIS Bike week, nothing more needs to be added

I map quested the directions to Sturgis from my house :geek All I would have to do is get on I-90(2 minutes from my house) Ride 900 miles, Exit I-90 in Sturgis :D

If I'm going solo, I might look for some riding buddies :) But I don't even know if I'm going.

The Buffalo Chip is around $40 a night or $255 for the whole rally and that includes the concerts. Beer is $4 a can at the shows and the bars or BYOB in the campground.

My old lady and I are both riding our bikes from AZ. My friends Joe and Sheila will be there too. We are staying in the dorms at the University in Spearfish. It was 350 dollars for two people for the entire week. So it was a bargain.

Last time I stayed at Creekside Campground. It was like 120 for the entire week and I did not make reservations.

I have that phone number it is (605) 642-6464

Their cancellation deadline is July 15, so you might get a room. and if you bring a friend it is 1/2 price. They also have a linen service so you don't have to pack any of that.

I just got my new Airhawk seat cushion today and I'm getting excited. My bike is on the lift for a bit though so I can't even try it out. I tried to take my rear tire to my local Indy and found out they went out of business as did the one I used to go to when I lived on the East side. So I need to find a new Indy, I'm waiting for HD to get my new axle and I've gone rattle can crazy so a bunch of the parts are ripped off and curing. It is way to hot to ride anyway but that doesn't stop the urges.

1200sportycustom: I want to buy you a beer. The trip sounds exciting. You will probably run into groups on the road out if you don't hook up with any riders here. You start to recognize faces at gas stations along the way. KOA campgrounds are usually cheap and plentiful and I used their map to get through half of WY.

RoadChick: Glad you are getting serious about going. :clap I'd ride up with Diesel if the darn rockies weren't separating our route but I'm planning some meet ups starting with the races on tuesday.

To answer a couple questions, the rate that the Chip and Glencoe charge is per person not per site. It also includes a concert everynight so it is worth the price in my mind. The Chip actually charges for the concert and camping is free but you have to pay for the concert to get in.

Yes, there will be XLF get togethers. That was my whole intention in starting this thread, to get a list together. That and to try to hook up riders from the same area to have riding partners up and back. The first meeting so far will be the drags to support NRHS. Other than that I will try to get a couple rides together for everyone.

If you haven't already but are interested, PM me and I'll get you my number so we can keep in touch. If you are looking for someone to ride out with we already have a big group from the midwest, a couple SW, one NW and a lone rider from AL to hook up with.

I'm very excited for this year. Last year I didn't get together with any members and it was embarassing that we never planned anything.

no worries about the seat. I did not get her an airhawk--going to make a cheapo pad and then check out the booths in Sturgis to see what's available. Against my wishes, she really doesn't want the windshield and says the seat is fine--we will see.

I have driven that in a car, Please be careful between Rawlins and Laramie. That is a shitty road!

If you guys are going to be in cheyenne, let me know what day--We will be there the 5th and the 10th. I have a friend with a huge garage there if you want to crash for a night.

I was planning on heading North at Rawlins up to Casper so we would miss Laramie. Probably shooting for Gillette on the 5th to be close without being too close.

I've got a bunch of numbers that I need to get organized So far the first meet up will be Tuesday the 7th at the races. If anyone wants to come up with a ride for a day let me know and we can work out the details.

Man do I love living in SD this time of year. Only 390 miles to ride.

SO and I will be pulling out of Brookings, SD, 8-9 AM on the 9th. She's chasing in her car; I'm on the Sporty.

We're planning on riding Spearfish Canyon Friday morning and then we're going to do Needles Hwy. on Saturday morning. People are welcome to join if they like

We're staying at Camp Rapid in one of the "tin huts." They have some really nice BOQ there but there was a huge wait for them when I called a month or so ago. There are probably some tin huts still open for those of you with military IDs. I'm pretty sure the lady I talked to said the cost was going to be ~$5/person per night for your own hut. ....and the Clock Tower (bar) is right across the street. I'll be calling them tomorrow to see what the final story is on those and will report back.

It would be nice though, sitting in traffic for hrs, waiting in lines to see women wearing next to nothing, walking around the vendor areas bumping into everyone, spending too much money... I went last year and had a great time. We stayed in Rapid City. Left out early each morning and got back before it was too late in the evenings. Usually didn't have lines that were too terribly long or traffic that was too bad. But attendance was way down last year from what I understand. That was fine by me! I'd like to go again when it's not bike week just to appreciate the scenery and countryside more. Sure wish I could make it this year but it's just not in the cards.

Shoot, I wish I would have known that you lived here earlier, I only live about 100 miles from you in Bristol. My BIL works down there at the Advanced Auto Parts, so I am down there quite often, especially at Skinner's! Good bar and good beer! We need to meet up before the riding season is over and just cruise.

BTW, I am Josh and my cell is 605-201-2838 if anyone wants to meet up. Will be there from the 5th through the morning of the 8th. I have the whole week off (I love working at a place where no one else goes to Sturgis!!!), but I take the last half to watch the farm for my Father-in-law while he rides to Sturgis for the last half. I will be at the drags on the 7th for sure! Everyone ride safe! I am taking Hwy 12, to Hwy 83 and the rest of the way on 212 through Newell into Sturgis.

Some info for the first meet up.

Tuesday August 7th 2007 around 12:30 PM till ?

AHDRA at Sturgis Dragway

We will be meeting in the pits where NRHS will be working on their stuff between 12:30 and 1 PM. After that we might be in the pits or in the stands but we will be there. If you can't find us call me, Keith 702-856-6750 or find my bike in the lot and I will be there after. The entrance fee is $15 or $10 for HOG members, active and reserve Military are free. Tuesday is qualifying, Wed. is eliminations but I'm not planning on making Wed.

The drag strip is on the East side of Sturgis very close to The Buffalo Chip and Glencoe Campground. Directions are in the links. At some point we will try to get picks, probably after the races.

Is there anyone from this forum staying at Buffalo Chip? If so, I just called and I would purchase NOW. I was informed that the weekly rate will go from 255 to 500 if you purchase when you arrive.

Just saw a warning on the Reservations page of the Chip website.

July 29 at about 6:00 PM MDT, will be the cutoff to get the Early Bird, the Extended Rally, or the Rally Pass at the current low advanced rate. Event rates will be in effect at that time. Save yourself some $$$ and get your reservations now! The Rally is almost here!

With tax and processing the rally pass from Monday to Sunday is currently $280.50.

For all of you military people:

I just talked to Camp Rapid this afternoon. The BOQ is full (figures). She said they are authorized to use 801, which is the building with all of the bays in it (8-10) bunks per room. I've been talking to her randomly since early June so she set us up with one of the "tin huts" for $5/person per night. There are definitely still spots there if you don't mind sleeping in a bay. PM me if you want to get the number for the training/rooming POC.

BOQ fills up pretty early, so if you're coming next year it wouldn't hurt to get on the waiting list now. I'm planning on getting on the list for next year while I'm checking in this year. They're pretty new and nice.

Also, there's a bar across the street from the secondary, entrance, the "Clock Tower Lounge. " That would be where you'll find me Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.:laugh

Also, we're still planning on riding Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway (Norbeck Scenic something) on Saturday (11th) morning. It's a GREAT ride. Let me know if you want to join us.

The thought of riding into new territory is really exciting. Going new places is so much fun to me. I have never been to Utah, other than a airport layover, nor have I been to Wyoming or South Dakota.

I want to thank Vegas1200C for organizing these get togethers that are going to happen at Sturgis and allowing me to ride up with him, and also his staying in the same camp ground. AND letting me use one of the racks he has built!! Thanks!!

But the rub of this is that I have to go out of town WED and Thur, and We will be leaving friday. And, as everyone knows, I don't have internet at home (I know) and want to have a semi completed list by Wed. morning when I leave for business. gkudel@msn.com

I'm planning on doing 3 long rides probably Wed, Thurs, and Fri. They are in no particular order:

Deadwood to Spearfish Canyon out to Devil's Tower back to Deadwood.

Circle around the Badlands Park

Mt Rushmore to Crazy Horse thru Custer State Park and the Park South of Custer (Wind something I don't remember)

There are parts of all of these rides that I've never done so if someone wants to lead or plan the excact route I'm open to suggestions. One thing I'm trying to work into the plans is to start or end at places like the Rapid City HD or the Top 50 area. Places that have vendors so we can look around while we wait for everyone or hang out to chat after.

I'll post my route maps on my website and get a link up sometime tonight hopefully.

I don't know if you've ever done the Custer State Park thing, but just a suggestion if you haven't. I REALLY recommend that you take Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway through the northwest corner of the park. Some of the greatest views (IMO) of the state are on that chunk of road.

We'd probably join you, but I don't think the times are going to line up. Plus, both my SO and I are from here, so we've been to Wind Cave a few times.

I think this is the route we're going to take through Custer: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=US-16-ALT+%4043.891470,+-103.427330&daddr=Unknown+road+%4043.863080,+-103.440640+to:US-16-ALT+%4043.776060,+-103.343030+to:CSP+Road+1+%4043.641680,+-103.367440+to:SD-87+%4043.701920,+-103.478910+to:US-16-ALT+%4043.767930,+-103.457140+to:Unknown+road+%4043.891300,+-103.587540+to:43.89146,-103.427353&mrcr=6&mrsp=7&sz=11&mra=dme&sll=43.884037,-103.337402&sspn=0.360778,0.6427&ie=UTF8&ll=43.766135,-103.41362&spn=0.361491,0.6427&z=11&om=1

Just heard on SD public radio on my way home today that attendance is expected to be down once again this year. I think they said it was at ~456,000 last year and they're expecting 350,000-400,000. Reservation numbers are down at most hotels and campsites, with the exception of Glencoe and the Buffalo Chip, which are supposedly both up from last year.

Interesting to hear attendance is down- I want to go sometime, maybe some of the 'fad chasers' are tired of it, and it won't be such a circus. But then, everyone wants to see a circus.

I just got home about an hour ago! Had some adventures along the way home. Ran out of gas two times and lost my wallet in CO. No id, money, or credit/atm cards, and lost my bra in Cheyenne the night before.

I will post some pics later, I have to run to the DMV etc.

Also had a one in a million event. Decided to ride home alone, go through CO, Utah, and along the way I run into Diesal, Sylvia and their friend at a gas station. Strange BUT so so lucky because I rode home with them .... More to follow.

Glad to hear everybody made it home safe. Can't wait for your story Rene. Cool that your found Diesel and Sylvia. Thanks again for the slip-ons. Pretty serious riding Keith. I took two days to get home. 700 miles the first, 500 the second. 100 degrees when I hit TX. Don't know why but I got some serious crappy gas mileage in NE and KS. Wind wasn't any worse. Enjoyed meeting everyone.

We had a great time. I road the bike out and my girlfriend chased in her car. 1178 miles total (we live on the east side of SD).

Had beers then supper with my parents at Sanfords in RC on Thursday then cruised over to Sturgis so the SO could see what it is really like. Ended up right behind some older lady wearing chaps, a red g-string, and a candy necklace bikini. Nice welcoming for my girlfriend.

Test road bikes Friday morning. Road a soft tail, Buell, and Nightster. Soft tail was smooth (but slower than my 1200) but the riding position sucked. Buell was "meh." Nightster rode pretty damn stiff and the seat sucked. Love those new 1200 engines though. I'll be needing to upgrade if I stick with Sportsters. Rode over to Spearfish and rode the canyon around to Deadwood for supper. Beautiful ride. I'd never ridden the whole canyon before. Cruised back up to Sturgis and did the main street thing since the Lazell exhibits were all closing by the time we got there. Rode back to RC and had a bunch of Jack at the Clock Tower.

Saturday we cruised back over to Sturgis to check out Lazelle. Also cruised out east of town to show the SO where the Chip, Glencoe, and the Full Throttle are. Went and rode Iron Mountain Road, Custer Wildlife Loop, and Needles Highway. Should have done Needles first and skipped the Loop. Oh well. My digital camera took a shit while we were up there. Needed to be replaced anyway. Froze our butts off up on Needles. Went to Keystone and had and old-time picture taken (not my idea). Some idiot on a bagger was doing cookies out in front of the boardwalk when he layed his bike down. I asked the cop about it and he said, "Yeah I told him he should have stayed on the front brake better." Go figure. Same cop was doing the robot on the dance floor of the Red Garter after the frozen shirt contest two years ago when I was there.

Thought I was going to get drenched on the way home Sunday. Dad looked at the radar and told me I'd get wet half way home. Was roasting in my rain gear by the time I hit Wall. Kept the rain pants on until Vivian just to be safe.

No problems with the bike really except that the altitude was making me run pretty rich. Mileage was great: 38-45 mpg solo up to 85 mph, 43-50 mpg 2up going 10-70 mph. The new LePera Daytona LT seems to be better than my old Fastback. Apes were a nice addition.

Girlfriend is addicted so I guess we'll be going back next year. Might try to ride the Sporty out the whole way if I can get some luggage and new shocks by then.

So I guess that's my report.

Good pics everyone.

It was great to meet some forum members. Diesel and I talked about getting a South West ride/overnight together. Try to find a central location for AZ, So Cal and Vegas riders to do a weekend. Met him, his fiance and 2 friends as well as CPMike, Dan from NRHS with Road Chick at the Drags. All great people.

CPMike and I ran through Spearfish Canyon after Road Chick left us to get her bike checked out (a story I'm sure she will be sharing). We headed back to Sturgis and headed to the Corbin display to meet Sporty John and looked around at some of their stuff. After a couple minutes we asked if they had a Sporty rider working with them and they pointed to a tent where a guy was trying to get the seat off Road Chicks bike. She thought it was funny that we ran into her there, we thought it was funny that the guy we came to meet was the same one helping her. Small world or small rally. It was great meeting Sporty John, you making it out to Vegas Bike Fest or Laughlin? Be sure to give us a holler if you are on this side of the country.

Running straight through on the way home was a challenge. My entire body aches and my hearing is a bit messed up but it was worth it to run the desert at night when it was only in the high 80's. I ran into a bunch of other bikers at gas stations that stayed in Rawlings or other WY hotels the night before that were stunned that I was doing the whole thing on a Sporty. Respect was earned and paid.

Enough of my babbling, here a couple Buffalo Chip Ampitheater pics.

I am at work right now so I can not post pics. They are on my home computer. The story behind the bra... Diesal and Sylvia have a good friend in Cheyenne that let us stay the night and he cooked us a great meal.

Elk/Venison burgers, banana/cabbage coleslaw, beer, and even made us coffee in the morning. After drinking a few beers in his garage he asked for my bra to add to his wall collection of panties and bras.

So, I took it off right there and he hung it on the wall. Pictures to follow.

Thought it was the least I could do for all of his hospitality.

This road trip has rejuvenated my belief that their are goodhearted people.

Vegas1200c was nice enough to give me a rack for my bike.

Diesel and Sylvia took me under their wing when I lost my wallet and ran out of gas. They paid for my gas, meals, water, and lodging until my dad could wire me some money. They let me stay in their home, and treated me with the best hospitality. They are great people!!

Diesel's friend Rick opened his house to me, cooked dinner, and made his home feel like mine. Great good hearted guy.

When I ran out of gas the first time a man gave gas to Diesel and Sylvia for my bike.

The second time I ran out of gas, two men (Paul and Juan) drove me to the gas station, put the gas in my bike, and followed me to a gas station to make sure my bike was running ok. They even gave me their work number for me to call and let them know I made it home.

RoadChick
14th August 2007, 23:38
The trip has also opened my eyes and closed my heart to d:censor head dave. He did not even return my call when I was looking for someone to send me money when I had lost everything in CO. He owes me money from the cremation of his dog. His dog died while he was out of the country and called me to take care of it because he did not have anyone to do it. I guess he knows a sucker when he meets one.

I was having a hard time getting ahold of my relatives to send money. Finally I reached my dad.

Diesel and Sylvia were awesome though and I did not feel stressed out at all.

I'm not sure where my Pops was staying (campground) but I think he said it was Friday some drunk A:censor hole was doing donuts in an El Camino. Long story short he was headed for my Pops and his friends, they had to run and jump over a fence to avoid being hit. My Dad (61 y/o) cleared the fence but landed on his side and bruised his ribs. He thought they were broke, but had it verified at the Dr. the next morning they were only bruised. He said even on his Electra Glide it was a painful ride home.

Also, a guy he was riding with on a new Road King crashed twice in two days in Colorado. The 1st wasn't bad he locked up the rear on a slow turn and it high sided him, dusted himself off and kept going. The next day he got his jacket sleeve stuck on his throttle rocker, panicked and when he tried to pull it away it stuck wide open and he crashed hard on the side of the road, twenty feet from a 30' cliff. He had to be airlifted to a hospital, and now has plates, and screws in his wrist, and the bike is totaled. Pops said he didn't know how he did it, but his hand was stuck up in the rear fender wedged against the tire. He had to let the air out of it to free his hand.

Glad I haven't heard of any other serious problems with riders.

So riding up to Sturgis I really liked the sound of Keith's (Vegas1200C) Vance and HInes. I had no idea I would be purchasing them at Sturgis though. So we are at the Rapid City, SD Harley dealership that has tons of vendors for the Sturgis Bike Week. I see Vance Hine and decided to get the pipes.

I had the SE's from 2 years ago. After installing the Vance/Hines my bike starts to run like crap. So I dyno check and it is off. I decided to have a power commander installed and they can not get the Corbin seat off to install it. So, they send me to Corbin's both and I leave with a new seat.

Sturgis was awesome!!!! We cheated, shipped the bikes to Rapid City and flew up, this way we had more time to spend there (7 days) and we were not exhausted when we arrived. I had a few problems with the Sporty, I was heading into Sturgis the first night and my bike sounded odd and everytime I let off the throttle it backfired. I stopped to discovered that my front pipe was completely disconnected from the engine. Apparently the Sampson pipes that were on it when I purchased it were not a good fit which caused one of the front engine studs to sheer
off and the other bolt to come off. Two weeks prior one of the brackets holding the pipes had broken and I had it welded but I had no idea why it had broken. I found a guy in Sturgis who was able to remove the stud and replace it with a new stud and new bolts but he told me it wouldn't hold and sure enough the next day it was already coming apart. Vance and Hines had a booth at Black Hills Harley so I ended up trashing the Sampsons and put V & H Short Shots on. Then the bracket that holds the chock knob broke and my chock knob hit against my horn sounding like a cow bell. I had to have that welded because none of the HD shops had it in stock. I was having some trouble with the cross wind and the gusts which can be strong in some areas so I had the Progressive people replace my stock shocks.....wow if I had known what a major improvement this would be I would have done it the first day I bought my bike. I never understood how all these people could ride so confidently and corner at high speeds when it was all I could do to keep my bike on the road. The back end now feels like it nailed to the ground no matter how fast I'm going. I was so happy I just had to put purple lights complete with ground effects on my bike to celebrate!! Before leaving for Sturgis I'd put a custom 19" wheel with a Metzler tire on the front so in a 2 week time period I spent a bundle on the bike. But when I parked it on Main Street Sturgis at night with the lights on it was a hit! We rode over 650 miles while we were there, my husband even got hit by a tumbleweed in the Badlands. It's beautiful country, great riding, the people are VERY biker friendly, and every vendor you can imagine has factory reps there to service your bikes at discounted prices. I will go back again for sure. My Sporty got home on Tuesday and I was really happy to have her back.

I need one of these!! http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t51/bigbluebowtie/DSC03901.jpg Sorry about the big pic... I spent all of my money on a new tattoo this year. http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t51/bigbluebowtie/DSC03867.jpgSorry about the big pic again... Oh well, had a great time. SPent lots of money, four hours at the drags, heard concerts from my campground (btw, if you enjoy sleep, try crazy coyoteys campground, crazycoyoteys dot com), spent lots of time with my wife. It was a blast and at four years straight I see no reason to stop!! BTW, the tattoo is getting a Sporty underneath her in October. THat is why she is sitting.
