...I know, I know --- I've been promising this to a couple of you guys for what seems like forever.

This is what you end up with on the primary side.
No cable, no ball & ramp, no bullshit.
I tucked the hydraulic line in between the ribs of my MPD cover, but it can just as easily be tucked beneath or behind the primary for routing up to the m/c.

The H-D repop master cylinder I scored on eBay.

Totally off-topic, but I just had to show you one of these bad puppies mounted up. It's a Lyle Landstrom a/c cover for S&S Shorty E carbs (http://landstromsfoundry.com/Custom/Custom.html). He sand-casts them by hand out of 100% aluminum and is the way to go if you dig really big ribs. He ended up making only a few of them, but I'm sure he'd knock one out for you if you asked him nicely...

http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/ab61/ivancoachcoach/HeavenCycle32ndParty001.jpg

What I ALWAYS do to my a/c covers: Get out the drill and punch some 1.25" holes along the front edge to get that airflow going! The gauge near the forward control is my oil-pressure VDO plumbed up to the oil pump.

...put out by XLF member Machinist Mike ( http://www.tequilapress.com/hclutch/ ).
It's one of the very best upgrades you can perform on any '71-'84 ironhead.

fehd, I'll see if I can snap one for you this week.

I like everything about this bike (well, I'm not crazy about the big nuts on the rocker box and the pushrod covers, but that's probably just me). I'm wondering what that is above the oil tank. If it's a filter arrangement, I'd love to get the details, as I want to do something similar on my chopper.

I think that cylinder looking thing above the oiltank is just a housing for the ignition switch.

...that Desktop Defender 2010 virus and it's been hell trying to clear it out.
I finally got it out using the newer version of Malware Bytes.

Here are the full bike pics that I've posted before, with a different a/c (a velo stack and S&S mushroom cap cover). When these pics were taken, it also still had a regular headlamp. It's now running a Unity decklight that I scored off a 1962 American La France firetruck headed for the crusher. I'm really happy that at least one piece of such a cool old vehicle is still rolling down the road.

http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/ab61/ivancoachcoach/IRCprofileLEFT.jpg

The brass tube behind the oil tank isn't a filter, but rather, an electrical box (or tube, in this case) that holds the key switch on one side and the main lights ON/OFF toggle on the other.
It's a chunk of stripper-pole that a buddy who was remodeling (electrical upgrades) the joint (The Booby Trap in South Miami) scored for me.
It keeps all of the wires coming out of the frame bone-dry and routes them back to the circuit-breaker panel, which sits about all of two inches behind the tube in it's stock position.
Brass is an EXCELLENT electrical conductor, and besides, the joint where the pole came from holds many fond memories...:smoke

sweet ride Ivan. really like that exhaust, and the rear mounted oil filter. im fabbing up a mount for mine in the same spot, but angled to match the rear shock.

Ivan RoachCoach
5th January 2010, 19:37
...fabbing up a battery mount for my head, or running it in my back pocket. :) :) :)
You know what's funny?
I've NEVER had that battery tray scrape while cornering, and even though it's a Harley, I'm a hard-leaner who grew up idolizing and emulating Kenny Roberts.

You can even mount the filter vertically.
It will still flow just fine, no matter what kind of foolishness you read on the Internet about "proper oil filter orientation".

i was gonna ask ya about that, but i know you ride the ass off your bike, and i dont see any "unloading the rear wheel and slide out" marks, so i figgered it was cool. ive got a kick only and have an small AGM from a KTM dirtbike im mounting somewhere?? i moved the rear shocks back to the rear mount for the fender rail and the same amount on the swingarm. the filter will mount where the mech reg used to.

Moon Wolf
5th January 2010, 19:55
I've seen the battery mounted almost everywhere, including up between the handlebars and tied to the sissy bar--figuring out where to place the battery on a custom XLH is a common dilemma, especially on a swingarm bike.

And Machinist Mike,
Just so you know you will be the next one that I will be giving money away to as a reward to myself for quiting smoking.

Ivan RoachCoach

...fast, and never to return.
Been there, done that, don't miss it.

There are PLENTY of twenty-somethings on the QCB with fresh kidneys to cover that end of the spectrum.

Doyle, your $$$ will be well-spent.
The HydroClutch works like a charm, eliminates a sackful of unnecessary crap, and will remind you of why you love your ironhead.
Not only does Mike put out a killer and innovative product, the man is giving S&S some stiff competition for the best tech-support going.

Ivan do you recommend using the tamer along with the HydroClutch, I got the primary side torn down and the cost of a tamer is not that high.

Thoughts??

...when you're in gear, it will also serve as an excellent anchor point for your adjustment bolt (which will become your clutch pushrod).

This is how I did mine and got great results.

As mentioned before on this post - for those of us fortunate enough to have seen Ivan's bike in person its a real thrill and honor. I for one cant get enough of this thing every time I see it.

You mentioned to me once that you dragged her kicking and screaming into the 21st century and you sure have. Its like a traveling time machine that's been resurrected and is currently living in 2010. I just cant get enough of this thing and always find something new on it. From front to back I don't think there is one thing that hasn't been messed with or customized.

Besides all that - you know your stuff man and you never hesitate one second to share your knowledge with any and all of us! THANKS! You truly understand what is to help out and when it comes time to ride, you ride the snot out of that thing and never look back!! You're a class act stand up kinda guy!!

Cant wait to get out there and hit the pavement with you once it warms up a bit cause aint no way in hell youre gonna catch me out in this weather.

Weve been rained on...sweat our asses off in the summer but I can do without the frostbite.

You know what - come to think about it...Its pretty much the only riding condition weve never ridden in. Well, I guess Im just gonna have to suck it up and loose a finger or two!!! YEHAWWW SCREW IT LETS RIDE MAN!!! 30° aint nothing

...we can handle it...right???...:banasad

+1 on that. not tryin to blow smoke up your ass, but i have much respect for people who tell it how it is AND know they're shit. i look forward to when i move down there so I can ride with ya'll ALL YEAR ROUND. the cold here sucks, but the ice covered roads make it impossible to ride safely. so Ivan, and all you others down in FL, i look forward to scrapin pegs with ya'll. :smoke

...to do it while you're still above ground, drawing breath, and able to enjoy the year-round riding.

Florida has no mandatory helmet law (if you're over 21) and doesn't require ANY form of insurance if you own your bike outright.
Yeah, it's chock full of crappy Third World drivers out to commit jihad on you --- but it's STILL mothorcycle heaven... :) :) :) :) :)

12th January 2010, 11:46
Great looking bike man. I don't know about the seat though
Think they have a hydroclutch model for 86' to 90'? Would be much cleaner than a huge cable that pretty much rubs the hell out of the mounting brackets of my 1/4 fairing.

Ivan RoachCoach
12th January 2010, 17:49
...I've done the Key West Poker Run (300 miles one-way from Miami) on it numerous times with ZERO comfort issues.

It's not even spring-loaded or padded --- just a thin strip of leather over the steel seat pan.
The trick?
The pan is shaped for support with the ends lifted at the front & rear, also the seat is wide enough (14") so it doesn't feel like you're straddling a fence post or riding your old Schwinn Stingray from when you were a kid.

Machinist Mike isn't making a HydroClutch for post-'84 Sportsters (yet), but Harley uses it on the newer ones.
Look into it, use a little imagination, and get out the tools.
ANYTHING can be made to work with ANYTHING else.

...on a daily basis.
Your shifting will be slicker and smoother, the engagement much more positive and less squirrely.

It will also eliminate the creeping forward that you often get when stopped at lights while in gear.
