View Full Version : Sportster Rally 2010 at Riders Roost

7th January 2010, 00:39
The 4th annual Sportster Rally is planned to occur May 14th, 15th, 16th of May 2010, which is the weekend after Mothers day. Again it will be at the Riders Roost in Ferguson, North Carolina. I sent an e-mail to the folks at "The Roost" but have not heard back. I assume the date will be fine.

As usual I am lazy, no tee shirts, bands, or pins and we eat out at restaurants. I will plan the rides, one for Friday and one for Saturday, which I really enjoy doing. Any ride suggestions are welcome. Plan on Shadley Springs for lunch on one of the days, an interesting place if you've never been there.

Also, I'm not planning on riding over the eastern continental divide at 3am this year as I am too old for that :censor

You can contact me at gary@higbee.us for info or suggestions and we have a web site at ecr.xl-rider.com but it has been neglected and needs dusted off for 2010.

7th January 2010, 00:54

I'm going to keep my eyes on this one..Folks where talking a great area of riding around the North Wilksboro NC area, not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway, and some great roads around Boone or West Jefferson area..

You'd be crazy to miss out on these roads and the great scenery to boot!

7th January 2010, 02:36
That would be great. I rode up to the Dragon from Florida Labor Day and had a blast. The twist and turns where awsome. We rode about 1600mi. in 5 days what a trip! Can't wait to get back up there.

7th January 2010, 02:48
You know, if you and JoeSporty could work around the KC Rally, it'd be awesome to do 3 rallys in a row.

7th January 2010, 02:51
I can hardly wait!

31st January 2010, 17:39
I recieved an e-mail from the new owners at Riders Roost.
Thanks for the info. They can make reservations now since they will be with your group. We look forward to meeting you and your group.
So when you reserve your cabin mention your with the Sportster Group so we can be grouped together.

31st January 2010, 17:43
this sound interesting.

4th February 2010, 04:55
I have been planning on this ride. Was that eastern continental divide the road we took back to the roost last year in the pouring rain? that was an interesting ride home especially for my half blind arse. lol. I should be better this year since I am installing HID Bi-Xenons in my bike (if they fit).

5th February 2010, 01:17
Yes, thats what they call it. That was quite a ride.

5th February 2010, 14:45
i'm interested

Presuming I can get the time off work, I'll be there. Who am I kidding...I'll be there regardless!! ;) Always a great time with a bunch of great people on great roads. Well, with the exception of the midnight ride across hell... that definitely ranks up there in the dumbest things I've ever done. But, I'd probably do it all again. :doh

5th February 2010, 19:02
I'm hoping to make it again this year but it's not definite yet. I need to figure out a few things with another trip I'm planning first and see if I can combine them.

7th February 2010, 03:28
I mite be able to make the KC one, my old hometown.

7th February 2010, 04:57
I plan to be there also, if I'm still on the east coast then.
It's a great time and great roads to ride. :tour

8th February 2010, 21:55
I'm planning on it. Anyone else gonna reserve a bunk house rack? PM me if you want to share a room. I'm gonna make it this week. (the resevation that is) Looks like a good place. Been in the neighborhood a few times & the riding is always fun.:tour

10th February 2010, 08:03
The Lincoln County CBA Rally is at the Roost, that same weekend. That means I'll be with two groups at the same place again. This should be fun!

11th February 2010, 01:32
What is the Lincoln County CBA? When I was e-mailed from the Roost there was no mention of another event that weekend.

11th February 2010, 01:34
If it's Consuming Beer Association, I'll join... :laugh

11th February 2010, 04:23
What is the Lincoln County CBA? When I was e-mailed from the Roost there was no mention of another event that weekend.

The Concerned Biker Association. Don't worry Pam and David know that both groups are coming the same weekend. Everything is under control. Gary and I are friends with the new owners. They have made lots of changes. They now have wi-fi, and you can rent storage lockers to keep your stuff in, which is good for us because we go there quite often. They also have an apartment that they rent out!:banana

More info on CBA/ABATE...

29th March 2010, 03:24
any updates? I tried emailing them about reserving the cabin but they never got back to me. I am taking the days off work tomorrow and will be calling after I get them off to reserve the cabin then.

3rd April 2010, 21:27
Nothing has changed so far. There hasn't been a whole lot of response but theres a little time left.

5th April 2010, 23:31
I got an e-mail from them a week or so back confirming my reservation for the bunkhouse. So some one is there.

6th April 2010, 01:43
I called today and talked to Dave. Sending the check in the AM.
They did not respond to my first query from their web page.

I'll be coming in Thursday evening.
If anyone is interested I'll be leaving NJ on Wednesday after work, stop someplace that night and finish up the ride
on Thu, so I don't get in too late.

The gang from last year.

6th April 2010, 02:52
I'll be there this year. I Have to get the time off work one way or another :) !!!

6th April 2010, 05:08
It's gonna be great seeing everyone again!

7th April 2010, 16:52
As of now, I think I'm out. I need the vacation time for a big trip later this year. When it gets closer, I'll see if I can maybe take off just that Friday.

7th April 2010, 16:57
Too bad it is the same weekend as the Smokeout

8th April 2010, 04:30
Decman ... If you are coming down Eastern Shore across CBBT we can hook up in Tidewater.

Mike LI or Red Tig, same offer if you come this way.

14th April 2010, 23:49
I'll be there. Have the cabin reserved and the time off work. I'll be riding down with Redtigger but don't know which way we are headed down yet. I want to take the BRP down but that is way west of wear we will be starting from so that probably won't work. pcwolf, I'll get back to you or tigger will when we figure out which way we will be headed down. I would prefer the least amount of highways possible but I don't think that will work due to time restraints.

24th April 2010, 17:44
I'm just getting started planning the rides and food stops. If anyone has anything they would like to see, do, or eat, let me know.

24th April 2010, 22:16
As long as we get to ride and stay on the road, I'll be happy.:tour

And don't order the rain like you did last year...:p

I'm just getting started planning the rides and food stops. If anyone has anything they would like to see, do, or eat, let me know.

25th April 2010, 20:14
Well, I got the time off of work and so does the wife. She doesn't want to take the kiddies out of school for friday, so I'll not be bringing her. :(

I think I'll pass on the rain this year as well. :) So if we're starting a poll vis a vie, rain or no rain, put me in the no rain category please.

Not really sure how we're headed this year. I was planning on going across VA again, but I think we'll just Superslab it to the Roost and take the long way home. I gotta see what routes work out the best. We're planning on leaving before the sun comes up to get there in plenty of time for dinner friday..

25th April 2010, 20:54
It's the Sportster East Coast Rally...of course it will rain!!! :doh

Higgy - As usual, you pick the roads and we will just follow. And, this year I'll stay in the back of the pack where I belong.

Seriously, we'd be hard pressed to make a wrong turn. (It's the turns some riders don't make that give us problems ;) )

Does anyone know if they changed any policies or anything about tent camping? I've never made reservations in the past and presume I still don't need to...

26th April 2010, 00:56
Higgy ...

I was just thinking today, I am working the bugs out of a shimmy-free mount for my new HD digital camcorder. I am sure others have as well. If there is a short down-and-back route we can maybe plan an hour or so for action shots of our running mates. Half the photogs run ahead to set up and shoot then catch up with the group at the terminus, and the other half do the same on the return?

I remember last year Redd ran out ahead of the pack to pull off in a good spot to catch us on the Snake return. I really appreciated getting copies of those pictures when I got home, but then realized he gave up half of his own ride to take them from the side of the road and no one got pics of Redd riding past.

I don't have a lot of experience with group riding but thought I would bring the idea up. Your trip plan was most excellent last year.

26th April 2010, 15:20
Higgy, you will pick great roads, I'm sure! I don't care where we go, as long as we go!! I'm hoping the rain stays away, but, it seems to follow me. Te CBA is cooking Saturday evening and selling meals, so that is an option. I already told the CBA that I plan on going with the Sportster group cause I see them all the time. LOL.

Tigger, I hate it bout the wife, I was lookin forward to meeting her :(

Dan, tent camping is the same. I plan on tent camping this year too. We don't need a reservation.

PC, that is a great idea!

26th April 2010, 15:27

Looks like I will take the same route as last year.
Leave Wednesday, stay in Ocean City MD, that night, head to Norfolk Thursday AM and head west on 58 from there. Not sure what you schedule is but let me know.

26th April 2010, 23:32
Decman ...

I am retarded ... er, make that retired ... I have the entire week clear.

I can pick a gas stop on Route 58/13 outside Suffolk to meet up with you Thursday morning. Give me a rough ETA to Suffolk and I'll let you know the address of the gas stop.

27th April 2010, 04:56

OK will do. I am guessing around noon in Suffolk, but I'll let you know when we get closer.
I think that will put us into the Roost around 6 PM or so.

5th May 2010, 03:53
With the trip less then 10 days away. I want to know a tally of who's coming and who's gonna miss this trip..

also, when people plan on being there..

That'll help me decide if I need an additional day off work.

5th May 2010, 09:09
Redd, I am going to get there about sundown on Thursday. Got nothing to do and no time to be there otherwise

5th May 2010, 09:15

Sounds like a plan.
Just a warning, I'll be on the Dyna this year. The 1200S is in Wyoming.:(

Dec, I will try to keep up. :)

The Cumberland River flooded Titan's Stadium in Nashville past the front row seats last week ... let's hope the rain gods have done their evil deed for the year. Current Johnson City ten-day forecast is for "Isolated Thunderstorms" and 60% chance of precip for Friday May 14.

Guess we will see.

6th May 2010, 04:29
I should be there between 8 and 9PM Thursday.

6th May 2010, 14:18
I'll be there Thursday evening, before dark, I hope. Leaving Ohio at dawn. We'll see.

6th May 2010, 14:36

Gammaqueen - Thanks for posting the pictures! Good to see you and Gary again.

Hope everyone is getting home safely. It was good to see you all good. Glad we got some good riding and the weather even occasionally cooperated.

Here's some of the pictures I took on the Snake on Saturday of XLF members:

You can see the rest of the pictures from the Snake here (http://screwloosedan.com/cm/thumbnails.php?album=40) (there's a couple pics from the BRP on my way down to the Roost). If anyone wants a fullsize original photo for photochopping/printing, PM me your email address and I'll send it.

I'll get more pics and a video posted up at some point...

17th May 2010, 05:42
Got home 9:15pm, shot a lot of video but most of it is unwatchable. There is one good clip of the first run on the Snake which I am still trying to edit. Until then, here is a taste:

YouTube- XL Forum 2010 Sportster Rally

Had a great ride and hope this rally continues. The people change but the ride stays the same.

17th May 2010, 06:13
Glad that everyone had a good time, MikeLI_77 and I made it into MD around 9:15 pm.

This is where I'd be posting my pictures, but I left my camera in my cabin all weekend.. (typical)..

Great ride. and Great People.

Thanks for making it happen again Higgy.

17th May 2010, 16:49
Now I'm looking forward to the Dragon run in June!

17th May 2010, 17:20
That looks like it was fun! Wish I coulda gone! I'll be at the Dragon, though. Thanks for the pics!!

17th May 2010, 18:57
Doug and myself made it home fine. Seems like everyone had a good time, I know I did. I want to thank Mike and Dan for tail gunning, helped out a lot leading the people around.

17th May 2010, 20:14
Seems like you all had a great time and what a nice campground by the looks of it !
Thanks for sharing pics and vids.:)

18th May 2010, 00:01
Got home about 3:30 pm today. I'll post some pics soon.

Was a great time with just a 'splash' of rain.....

18th May 2010, 02:58
I got back on Long Island around 4:45 and then took a ride to the shop I bought my bag from to order some parts that were missing off it when I bought it, and then went home. It was good seeing everyone again. I had fun riding with everyone and riding the roads we rode on. Looking forward to next year.

18th May 2010, 15:38
Here is the group photo

Gary (higgy), Kevin, Dave, Doug, Phil (pcwolf), Linda (gammaqueen), Brian, Dan (screwloose), Anthony (ReddTigger), MikeLI_77 and way up on the hill Gary.

Correct me if I'm wrong with the names of the new guys.

The rest of my photos are here

18th May 2010, 16:56
OK guys, here is 421 from start to finish. Vid starts out slow but captures the "feeling" alright. The Chest-cam steadies the video pretty well but I caught a lot of tank and gauges when I went into my Isle of Man crouch. Next year I try the Helmet-facebar-velcro-cam!

If anyone wants the whole video in one high-def file, give me a PM with your preferred format and I will email it to you.

Looks like a great time, I'm sorry I missed! No mishaps this year?

Quite mishap free. However, I think everyone took the snake with an air of caution.

19th May 2010, 03:11
Thats the first half of "The Snake". After the store stop the road runs another 7 or 8 miles north and is the better part in my opinion. This is where Dan took his pictures. Then we ran south back the way we came and I picked up the pace a bit, I rode it slow the first pass in case the police were patroling. So we rode about 35 miles of "The Snake" in all.

19th May 2010, 03:16
Kribit ...

We missed you this year. No mishaps. But Decman was kind enough to demonstrate the proper execution of a full-lockup powerstop.

19th May 2010, 04:16
Watched the video, and I found myself asking;" Is that gas cap moving?" It sure looked like it.
