View Full Version : Denim?
auwrestler197 16th May 2005, 16:13 Okay, so tons of riders have denim. Is it more comfy than leather on warm/hot days?
If so, where can I get a good denim jacket on the net?
Thanks.
Malpaso 16th May 2005, 16:17 Personally, I don't think denim is going to save your skin like leather will. That said, the best denim jacket I ever had is a Carhartt.
auwrestler197 16th May 2005, 17:43 Well, that's true but it's better than nothing when It's too hot for leather, right?
willprevale 16th May 2005, 19:38 While denim doesn't come close to leather, it's ability to withstand abrasion is surprisingly good and in any case stands tall over bare skin. I wear Levi or Wrangler during the summer months.
My denim jacket that I wear sometimes when riding is actually the HD one. I got it on eBay new for $25 :) There's a storefront on there that sells them. They are just missing the square leather label on the bottom of the back.
pquirk 16th May 2005, 20:02 If you eant to wear demin and be safe there's a company that makes kevlar lined denim stuff. The jacket is in the $100-200 range if I remember right. Some folks here posted a link awhile back but I don't remember who. You might just do a search for it. The stuff looked pretty cool and with the kevlar it's probably a good compromise between regular denim and leather in terms of abrasion resistance. Okay, I did a quik google, here's a link, I don't know if it's the same one posted earlier, but you get the idea and the price is reasonable Kevlar/denim jacket (http://www.duluthtrading.com/items/85352+DNM+MED.asp)
Shark Doctor 16th May 2005, 21:41 Not sure how we got two denim threads going simultaneously, but...
I have an ancient POS denim jacket that is soft as a baby's butt, yet still tough enough to offer some protection. I prefer it to leather except when it's really cold or when the occasion is "Sporty Formal." :laugh
gamhill 16th May 2005, 21:50 I have an unlined Levi's button up jacket that I like to wear in warm weather around town. One neat thing about this jacket is that has two inside flaps that kinda work as pockets, I can toss my house keys, cell phone and PDA in them and not worry much about them.
While it may not offer as much protection as leather, late spring and summer it's gets damn hot and humid in "Hot-Lanta"......

Great looking jacket and very reasonably priced. I will be getting one.
Desertfox 17th May 2005, 09:41 I have a Pendleton denim for cool mornings but even that is getting warm in the near 90 degree afternoons we are already having. In July and August the wind will burn you even at 50 or 60 mph.
bplinson 17th May 2005, 09:54 I have a great Marlboro demin jacket with leather collar that I got for free (well...I had to smoke 12 cartons of cigs). It is nice on hot days when leather is just way too much.
sawrecker 17th May 2005, 12:11 nice link WILL. looks like they have some nice stuff, and big guy sizes.
GOTWA 17th May 2005, 21:20 Draggin Jeans by Fast Company also makes protective denim. Both jeans and jackets.

jmacdonald19 21st April 2007, 23:45 Ok, here's a complete noob question, but in changing from my cold weather jacket I decided to go with denim, and got a Levi's standard trucker jacket. Figured I could at least get my patches out of the box and get the colors on. However, I noticed when I ride with it that the collar has a tendency to flap in the wind, slapping my face pretty good when I get up around 60. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to avoid this?
First message on the forum by the way, and everyone's always had good advice, so I have my fingers crossed on this one :)

i dont like to wear any type of jacket with collars for that reason. you could sew a couple buttons and put slits on collars to secure them or just stitch the collars directly to jacket. im sure youll find something that will work for you.
nkyratdog 22nd April 2007, 02:59 JC Pennys has the import levi jackets for 68.00
khaskins 22nd April 2007, 05:57 Just read about the Cortech DSX Denim Jacket in April 2007 American Rider.

I think that I will buy one. I googled it and found several vendors selling it for about $ 89.00.

I have a Levi denim jacket that I cut the sleeves and collar off. It's now a great looking vest. No collar equals no collar flapping onto my neck! That really used to bug the s:censor t out of me!!
ReddTigger 22nd April 2007, 06:38 When the collar starts flapping, I usually just turn it inside my jacket. Tuck it under, and button the top button, and the flapping goes away. when you get off, unbutton the top button, and pull to a fonzi point...
Gone 22nd April 2007, 07:31 I picked up a lightweight nylon riding jacket and pants this winter, for summer riding. They both have a lightweight membranes to keep out showers and retain heat on cool evenings/mornings - which can be removed and fold up into a pocket to let air flow freely through the outer material. Got them in a light, reflective gray to beat back the hot sun. They have soft armor for crash protection in case I get dumped by a jack rabbit at 80 mph, while crossing central Oregon.
AussieGazza 22nd April 2007, 07:55 I have two pairs of Draggin Jeans I always wear when riding (and most other times).
I had them made to measure as I was working near their Melbourne Aus HQ.
Google their web site as they sell in the US. Check out one of their staff being dragged behind a drag car. :D
XLXR 22nd April 2007, 07:56 I haven't read the entire thread, but I tell you from experience denim alone does not protect you from anything except bug splat. I have the scars to prove it.
Brad40 1st May 2007, 15:55 I always wear at least denim , can't understand those that ride in shorts . What if the unthinkable happens and you go down , ouch ...
Hillbilly Wolf 12th May 2007, 18:13 I wear an Icon Strongarm denim jacket. It feels good in the summer AND it is fully armored.

Had same problem - sew a few stiches to keep the flap down - if you can't sow, I'd try super-glue. My jacket is about 30 years old - I'm not concerned about putting a few stiches into it.
alsipd 12th May 2007, 18:46 I use a Firstgear Meshtex armored jacket for hot weather, otherwise I wear leather!
