• Motorcyclist dies in bike-rally incident

As the first weekend of May’s bike rallies came to a close, police were investigating the death of a motorcyclist after a wrong-way crash early Monday morning.

The fatality came amid efforts by state officials and rally organizers to promote motorcycle safety.

Surfside Beach police said the wreck was the town’s first motorcycle fatality in several years and it was the first death associated with the 2005 Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association Myrtle Beach Rally.

There were three fatalities during last year’s rallies, down from 15 in 2003.

Harvey Harold Ocallaghan, 49, of Hampstead, Md., was killed early Monday when his motorcycle hit a car as he traveled the wrong way in the 600 block of Business 17 in Surfside Beach, said Steve Homitz, deputy chief of the Surfside Beach Public Safety Department.

Like Will says, "Here's Your Sign..."

It'll be interesting to see the results of the investigation, but I think we all know what it'll reveal anyway...

He was a member of my ABATE chapter here in Carroll County. I don't ride with them or hang out with them...I just pay my dues in the name of representation for motorcyclists.

What was probably the cause of this man's accident is the reason I don't because I've found it to be a little too prevelant during their rides for my taste.

I'm fueling the Sportster at the gas station last Saturday AM when a fellow rider asks if I'm going down to Myrtle....

I said nah, it gets a little crazy for me down there. I'm just gonna ride around here this weekend.

He replies, Yeah, me too. Saw a fatalitly down there the last time he went...

I like a few beers as much as the next guy, but not while I'm riding...

Ride safe everyone

From what I hear from the "saner" riders I know, the fall rally is quite a bit tamer...

I was down at the rally this past weekend and it seemed a little tamer than usual. Most of the rowdies were down around Murrell's Inlet where there are several biker bars. It looked like there were a lot more SC troopers out than years past, too.

I was surprised to see a quite a few Sportsters at this year's rally. Most of them were the newer rubber mounted models--I would say Harley is doing pretty well with them.

I've got some bike pics my son took while we were down there. As soon as I get 'em resized, I'll post 'em up.
