I am getting very tired of hearing that the sportster is a girls bike. I was just thumbing through an edition of HOG Enthusiast and there is nothing but pics of women on sporties and articles about the women who are riding them. My 04 1200r is quick and handles like a dream and blows away my buddies fatboy with cams, carb and exhaust work. Under no circumstance's do I feel a 1200CC bike is a "girls" bike. After I put on a set of V&h straitshots and a jet kit it sounds freakin mint too! The other day I over heard my own brother in law talkin shit about MY sporty in MY garage "" I cant ride no girls bike" is what he said. Well I let this SOB keep his rice burner in my garage so it wouldnt get damaged outside this winter.....after I heard that I got a good mind to tell him get your plastic, rice burning shitbox out of my garage!
Anyways...that enough, sorry for the rant but I had to get that off my chest.
Just wondering if others experienced this comment? :angry :angry :angry

I won a HD T-bag at the HOG christmas party a week or so ago. A few people I knew sitting around the table I was sitting at said all I needed now was a bike big enough for it. I said "I'll race you for it, if you beat me you can have it." Funny, no one took me up on the offer :D

Seems funny that I see more women on bikes like the softail deluxe or Heritage models. I see a few women on sporties but not many and those that do have them are those with the 883 as opposed to the mighty 1200.

Yup, got a friend with a tricked out softail that thought the same thing, the 1200 sporty is a girls bike, until I blew his handle bars off with a stage 1 04 1200R. Now that boy has been educated............................

I don't care what someone says however, if they're going to say something at least make it an educated comment. Bottom line is this, with its high cg, the sporty is the hardest ride of all the Harley's...........

My nephew made a remark to me about how his uncle from the other side of his family said that my Sportster is "the little Harley".

I reminded my nephew that said uncle is 43 years old, doesn't ride, lives with mom, only got his driver's license a year ago, and is still a virgin. :headb :D :laugh :mirror

I have never run into this. As a rider of both a sportster and a softail...I would say neither is girls bike. From someone who in 5'9" and 155lbs, the sposter fit me better and is more of a pleasure to ride. It also can kick the FXSTs *SS in the speed dept. If someone ever appoached me about the size of my bike and said it was a girls bike...I would think that a bike with a radio, windshield, heated grips, and gel seats etc is more of a wimpy ride. Just because it is weighs almost 800lbs does not not make it more manly. Put them on an old ironhead for 100+ miles and lets see what bike is for wimps!!

By the way...I do not actually feel that way but would just like to be prepared!!

Now I'm sure that a 1200 can beat a BT no problem in the 1/4 mile. But I didn't think that an 883 could keep up with a BT. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought I read that on the old forum.

stock b/t is what 65-70 hp
stock 1000 is about 60hp
stock trumpit is about 40hp

hmmm this don't add up right

oh ya stock 45 flathead is 26hp (ya I know , ya all are laughing right now ain't ya)

Sadly, you're too far away for me to prove how wrong you are....and I could use the money! :)

Not for nothing, but when my Dad came home for Thanksgiving (he's a member here, and has ridden Harleys since before I was born), he took a ride on it and got off saying "That is ONE FAST BIKE".

Nothing more than taxes paid....neither of us is over 170.....and everyone who ever hears/sees my bike invariably comments on how great it sounds at idle.......closest to perfect I could ever imagine....

10th December 2004, 19:53
Chuck, I don't deny that 883's are fast bikes. That's not what I am looking for. What I am asking is if anybody has any solid evidence that a stock 883 (or stage I for that matter) can beat a stock softail or Dyna in the 1/4 mile. I have a feeling that this is not problem for a 1200. And I agree the 883 can out accelerate the BT's because of the gearing and weight difference. But a BT has over 60% more displacement than an 883. That adds up to a pretty big top end advantage. I have a feeling that the BT would barely beat out the 883. People like 1/4 mile data because that factors in acceleration and top end power. 883's have better acceleration but top end power is probably more important in 1/4 mile runs. I could believe 883's outrun BT's on traffic light to traffic light races, but 1/4 mile runs are a different beast. I just believe the laws of physics say the 883 loses out slightly. I am not trying to hate on 883's but a 60% displacement disadvantage will surely hurt you in the 1/4 mile.

flathead45
10th December 2004, 20:01
in the early days of dirt track racing (topend power) the sports were the fastest thing around

why ?

the ama outlawed or limited trumpits to 500cc or half the displacement of harleys and the trumps were still kicking ass on the dirt oval , so displacement is not really a factor

rotorys or wankles are small compared to piston engines yet they can still out run bigblocks on the quarter mile

can an 883 beat a twinky ? my thoughts are off the line yes , at the end of the 1/4 I think the twinky will catch it , my .02

klown
10th December 2004, 20:10
Flathead, I agree with you about the BT finally catching up with the 883. Displacement may not really be a factor on dirttracks, but for straightline 1/4 mile racing it may be the most important of all engine parameters.

dmraco
10th December 2004, 20:38
I agree with Klown. I have both the the 883 kills the FXST is stop light races. however, I would not want to go up against it from a roll on anywhere above 50 mph. Now the 1200 has a much better chance. Total CCs is not that far from a BT.

The high CG makes the Sportster no beginers bike. More importantly to me, my oldest friend rides a '00 Electra Glide and my brother rides a '03 Hertiage Classic. These are the only two ever allowed to throw a leg over my bike. They both said the same thing as soon as they got off, that bike has a lot more guts than mine. These are two opinions I greately respect.

Darhawk,
Some threads on the former XLforum.net message boards received well over, I believe, 4,000 hits. (Girls Bike) threads are emotionally charged and attract same readers numerous times. The comments are interesting and I, for one, never tire from reading them. If this thread would ever retire to the back pages, someone, probably a newbie, would undoubtedly pick it up again. They would contribute a comment and everybody jumps back onboard. Thats the beauty of the message boards. In many ways, and in time, subject matter goes full circle.
We all become more knowlegable and appreciative of others opinions and humor. Ain't it great!

I am not big ( 5'10" 180lbs) but I can honestly say I love the looks and the sleekness of the Sportster. It really has nothing to do w/ money I just don't care for the bigger bikes. For the type of riding I plan on doing this bike will be perfect. If and when I get one I think I will be very haqppy w/ it for many years to come and have no desire to have a bigger bike. I have seen people smaller than me say that a Sporty is too small for them. I think it is their ego talking. I would never cut down anyones bike. We all get what we like and can afford. All Harleys are great. Everyone should be thankful and enjoy them and not act like "my bike is better than yours." JMHO. Guy

16th December 2004, 11:06
I read this some where but here is the quote
Girl's Bike ??
Something I'll never understand is why some Harley riders discriminate against other riders especially in light of the way society has stereotyped the Harley community and discriminated against it over the years. You've heard the disparaging comments like "Half a Harley" or "Girl's Bike" along with many others levied against the Sportster bysome in the Big Twin crowd. If so. How come it's faster than the BigTwin is? How come it's been the Factory racer in differing events for forty years now? What about the Buell, Harley's answer to Japanesesuper bikes, being based on the Sportster It has always had superior technology and Been more nimble than its brother, the Big Twin. Back in the Sixties, The Sporty led the charge when an Englishike-dominated sport converted first to the "Milwaukee Limey." Speaking of the old days, when watching early biker movies, you see the "real deal" riding their beloved "CH's" that today have become living legends? Nobody I know laughs at or puts down these guys. Yes, the "CH" is short for the brutal, knee-busting, kick start Sportster. Don't look like no half-Harley to me even though that's what some call it. Please take this last statement from where it's coming from…not me. But it's a comment I hear time and again from those in Harleydom who wish to pick on their own instead of fighting those who attack from the outside. Yeah, so they call it a Girl's bike in a derisive manner. This connotes frailty that inhibits them from handling "a man's bike." Well if you think about it, a smaller, physically weaker person would be better suited to a Softail with a lower seat height, a lower center of gravity and a set of front forks that pivot more easily on a smaller contact patch, skinny 21" wheel. That's if you think. Sportsters feel as if they have a higher center of gravity, making them seemingly more awkward to the uninitiated and you need long legs to touch the ground They'll pop a wheelie without even thinking about it. And light to light, try to beat one, with a "bigger" Harley, like a Softail for instance. A customer of mine is a seemingly mild mannered pharmacist. He wins about $500 bucks a month racing Big Twins on his 883 converted to a 1200. He hasn't even reached for the big gun yet….the 1200S with a hundred ponies at the rear wheel. I guess everybody's mad at me by now, but it needs to be said. So why on earth does Harley make this bike, its entry-level model? It's harder to learn on and it's the prototype for its factory racers-in order to prove it has a superior product in terms of speed. I don't understand it. As what should be isn't, and what isn't should be. I know, I know. The real reason the Sportster is the entry-level bike is that it's cheaper than the Big Twin models. Just wait until feminism gets a firmer grip in the last bastion of chauvinism, Harleydom and deals with "the Girl's Bike syndrome" and its connotations of weakness. It'll be fun to watch for those who love a good winnable fight. Now how about the men who ride and must put up with this reverse discrimination? Maybe feminism will wipe the slate clean. Or maybe, those who are free thinkers and strong of mind already know that the Girl's Bike has dominated Flat Track racing…you know, where you go full speed around corners with no brakes….and hill climbing…a brutal sport for the brave where Sportsters go up hills not suited for motorcycles. Now, how about the wheelie kings. You know, in a man's world, anyone who can do the block long wheelie, shifting gears as they pose dangerously on one wheel, scraping the rear fender on the asphalt, shooting up sparks as they roar by, are more Often than not on the Sportster. Motor builders have long recognized the superior technology used by Harley in the Sportster, some examples of which are: a. Pushrods that go straight up and down instead of wild angles like in the Big Twin; or b. Did you ever wonder where the three-hole crankpin you buy aftermarket to replace the single oiling hole factory one in your Big Twin came from? You got it, standard factory issue since the beginning in the Sportster; or c. The trochoid (rotor) oil pump, standard issue since 1977 on the Sportster, produces both high pressure and high volume while the lowly Big Twin still has a gear-driven pump that only produces moderate pressure and volume. Straighter pushrods along with the 3 hole oiling crankpin and the trochoid oil pump have all been adapted into the new Fathead Twin Cam 88's. Here's another one. What other Harley, or motorcycle for that matter, has crippled more people than the legendary Sportster kickstart? If rebounding compression isn't dislocating the knee or throwing the rider over the handlebars then the slip-through kick start gears extend the leg past where its supposed to go….snapping the kneecap. "Sportster knee", the tell tale limp, familiar with riders of the era is a badge of honor. The electric start has saved a whole generation from this mind numbing pain. Even the mass media glorified the Sportster a long time before it recognized the "old man's" bike, the Big Twin.Oops, I have to watch the reverse discrimination. Then Came Bronson" was the first and only TV Harley hero who traversed America, meeting every challenge society could throw at him on his Sportster XLCH. In the late seventies and early eighties, some bank robber gangs even used the Sportster as a get away vehicle…faster than the Big Twin police bikes and more nimble through traffic. Last but not least…..Evil Knieval. I never saw him riding a Big Twin. He is a Sportster man….all the way to the hospital and right back on them again The much maligned Sportster doesn't look like a bike for the frail or weak of mind to me.

At the end of the day HD is as much responsible for it as much as anything else....

HD is a marketing company that happens to sell bikes..... the 883 price is kept artificially low to entice people in and then get them to trade up to the "real" harley.

What a load of sh*t

the only reason ya need or would belive that rubbish is if ya got a small male appendage and need to try and prove somethin.....

As for the 'girl's bike' comments... Ef 'em. 95% of my friends all ride sportbikes anyway. And the ones that know old motorcycles know exactly where the sporty fits in in motorcycle geneology.

I sold my 1999 Sportster after a year and bought a 2000 Heritage because so many a..h... told me it was a girl's bike. A freind of mine let me ride his 2004 Sportster and I was so impressed that I sold my BT after riding it 30,000 miles and bought his bike. The Sportster handles better, has more off the line accelleration and is just plain fun to drive. The insurance is cheaper and I don't worry about scraping the paint off the frame every time I go around a corner. I learned my lesson. Ride what makes you feel good.

Girls' bike.....hmmm....I have never heard anyone say that....only because I am too far ahead of them to hear it. hehe. I have honestly heard of it, but no one has ever said it to me. I have had a few race me informally before. What I mean by that is they try and blow by me just to do it or gun it at lights to show that their bike is superior. I didn't get a chance to really see that superiority as my rear-views are very small. hehe. My Lil' Lady is a 1200C and, with taxes payed, pulls as much HP and torque as a BT.

I am tired of us even giving a crap about what people say or think. You either love your sportster or you don't. You are either waiting to get a big twin or your not. Quit trying to convince yourselves that your sportster is good enough. Tell those that insult your bike thanks for making us realize why we love it. Then tell em to F-off. Time to stop trying to convince ourselves and that is what this thread appears to be about. Atleast under the surface. Sportsters are for special people and when you understand what I am saying you will no longer care about what others think.

That's what I am sayin'. I love my bike regardless of who it can't or can beat. That isn't why I bought it.

I bought it, originally, from my best friend, a man who I consider a father figure and had own many HD's - all Sportsters. He was needing to get out from under the (even very low) payments and I needed to get out from over my Honda V45. Nice exchange as I sit here 3+ years later. I wanted a bike that would carry me, and a passenger if need be, comfortably, economically and with a certain amount of style. I go out to the shop on days I don't ride and just look at her. She is solid and well made and maintained. She is a rock among sponges. Never failing and ever faithful. More of a friend than a piece of machinery. I always expected it of her, as I had heard of the Evo's outstanding reliability. I did not expect her to be my last bike and indeed, she might not be. If I choose to "upgrade" (in the eyes of the masses who have not experienced the simplicity, freedom and power - don't let anyone tell you that freedom is not power) I will not ever forget that the Sportster was my first taste of HD and she was oh, so sweet. I might not ever again own such a machine. She has left her mark on me as surely as I have left my mark upon this world. As my wife and I take her to places the Sporty has not been, I am not thinking of anything but the sun, wind, and sometimes sand on my face and the warmth of my wife on my back and the pulse of our steed's heart before me.

Girl's Bike? I swing a leg every time I climb on - I don't step through...

The reason they call them sissy bikes is cause of the simplicity of the engine. Put a FLH or what ever F series side by side and have a race as to who can take out the Transmission the fastest. Go to a dealer and look at the service cost of a what I call Big Bike. The Hog Shop the one who put in my special order gray fin 1200 kit in my XLH 03 told me he charges a gran just to get out a big bikes trans. And the list goes on and on. Big Bucks for Big Bikes and Steel me too they have taged on them Not us WE are only a little bike, That gave Harley the land speed record of 256mph Real sisy uhh

Of all the insults that get thrown the Sporty's way, none of them bother me to be honest. I can't say that I actually care. However, I do enjoy getting into playful ribbing with a BT owner who also doesn't care. I had one guy who I talked to at a local Harley shop say, "Hey, nice half-a-harley." I laughed and so did he. I replied, "Yeah, it is half-a-Harley: the better half." Once again, all laughs, all around. True enthusiasts don't care what you ride, just so long as you do. Everybody has their vision of what a bike should look like but is those who think there is a generally applicable right and wrong who are less into the bike and more into themselves.

My vision has always been a Sportster type of bike. Growing up and to this day, if asked to describe a Harley, it would have come out to be more like a Sporty than anything else Harley made: all go, no show. That is what I wanted, and that is what I got. ;)

have only heard 1 negative comment about my sporty. stock pipes. everyone else gives me compliments. truth is i don't have alot of cash. was planning on a new full-size truck when my wonderful wife ageed that a bike would be a cheaper monthly payment. had heart set on a R-6 when i spotted the sporty. had it within 2 days before i even had a liscense or safety course. truly the nicest ride i've ever owned. so proud of it. i really mean it when i say i ignore anything negative i might hear or read about sportsters. i even call it my little harley. i hope that doesn't piss any of you off. i intend to get my wife on mine within the next 2 years so i can get a new one. hell, i might just get her a new one. girl's bike, entry-level, little harley, i don't care. i worked my ass off for this bike and i love it.

I know what u r sayin, alot of us don't go house poor just to be able to own the next best F'n , chrome drippin , billet gleeeeeemin , 9 million $$ paint job havin F'n planet F'n Hollywood bikes !!!!! I guess all that's ok if u r into all that or maybe it just takes all that for the testosterone level to stay high enough in some folks. I personally have found the sporty is a very capable machine and falls into the middle ground of life, and not a hole in the street to rake cash into (although one can just as easy spend a whole lot on a XL too ) but my kids arent eating balogna so i can ride in ultra style........an yes I too am quite proud of my 74 XLH. A friend of mine recently spent 36000 plus on a Hot-Match custom softail (now I've done some work on mine mind you)and believe it or not but he can't beat my old 74 especially on the twisties , I suppose cause the damned front tire is so damned out front, needs a parkin lot to turn around. Oh did I mention it's a very pretty bike, he carries x-tra sunglasses so some of us friends can look at it. Maybe it's just me, but they're only F'n motorcycles........enjoy em, but I refuse to go broke doing so. Sporty's definately get the job done...and they are fun to ride, I'm still a little less than 10000 into mine with not much more to do on it before I'm (for now) happy with it. The ONLY time a sporty is a girl's bike is when a girl owns and rides her HARLEY !!!!!! Mike

I get the grins when I hear that "Real men....." talk. Fact is, real men, and women do what they have a mind to. Real men and women make their own decisions based on facts, not popular opinion. As for the Sporty being a girls bike, I picked mine up yesterday. and have had at least 6 women asking for rides! Isn't that supposed to be a good thing? Whenever a friend of mine used to hassle me about my old '72 , I'd put a little pile of rice under his Japanese bike and tell him it was leaking :laugh . It's cool between friends, but, but it ain't cool when someone that doesn't even know you, slams your ride. Back before so many women were riding, they'd call Sportsters, piglets.Hmmm, since mine was chopped I guess that would have made it a Sportchop. Get it ! Piglet....Sporster...Sportchop! :laugh Oh man, I just kill me sometimes!!

I, too, have heard all the crap about Sportsters being "girls" bikes. My neighbor owns a Fatboy and he gave me grief about my little Sporty the day I bought it home--I was initiated early. I can afford a BT and considered a Dyna when I bought my Sportster. But after comparing the bikes, the price, insurance, value, etc., I bought my 2004 Pearl White (a girl's color?) 883C and do not regret it one bit--I also considered a 1200C but really couldn't justify the extra dough, either (OK, I'm a tightwad).

Even a guy in my office, who rides a Kawasaki Vulcan 750 (go figure that one out), commented on my "girls" bike. I'm his boss, so I should have fired him--just kidding. Girls bike, half a hog, mini Harley, call it what you want, I bought it for ME. With an affordable payment and insurance, I had money left over for all the goodies that make my Sporty mine. Isn't that what makes owning a Harley fun? And I'm not exactly sure, someone please let me know, but isn't the Sportster one of Harley's best selling bikes?

Oh, I may buy a BT someday, but I will never, ever, get rid of my Sporty. It's my 5th bike and my first Harley and it has as much sentimental value as anything I own. Ride your Sportster proudly. It's the BEST value and fun per dollar money can buy!

A couple of months ago I went on a ride with a group of women who were fund raising for breast cancer and I was the only one on a Sportster. Using logic I figured the BT's were the girls bikes... hehe...

All kidding aside, I only get compliments on my bike. The one occassion my bike was refered to as a girls bike was when I bought my Thunderheaders and on the box was a sticker that said, "Girlies Bike." Which just goes to show the mentality of the H.A. (who, btw manufacture Thunderheaders) that don't seem to remember thier roots when all they rode and chopped were Sportsters.

Humm, perhaps it's my 6' 220 lb. frame that keeps folks from talking trash to me. :)

Actually I believe most people that refer to the Sportster as a girls bike are just clowning around and don't mean anything by it. It doesn't bother me what-so-ever. I bought my Sportster because it's the bike I wanted, simple as that. I didn't buy it for anyone but me...

I am 51 years old, my wife is 47. We have owned and ridden:
Kawasaki 750 H2 ( can you say rocket ship? )
Yamaha Seca II
Kawasaki 900 Ninja
Kawasaki 600 Ninja
I road raced the 600 Ninja for a few years and went really fast with my knee dragging on the ground (yeh……kinda’ stupid ). My wife and I were both motor cops and spent A LOT of time on an Electra Glide ( the one I rode was an AMF and not a great bike ). All the bikes were a lot of fun to ride.

My wife and I now own a 2005 1200XLC. Is it as fast as the H2 or the 900 Ninja…..nope. Is it as nimble and easy to flick around as the 600 Ninja……nope. Does it vibrate all the bolts loose like the Electra Glide…..nope. Is it the nicest bike we have ever owned….you bet! My wife DID NOT want a HD but I talked her into it. She drove it home from the dealer. By the time we got home she was smiles ear to ear. Every time she rides, she comments on what a nice bike it is.

Is it a girl’s bike? I don’t think so…..but who cares. Who am I trying to impress?

Plus……………I like riding behind my girl…..nice thing to hold onto!

Happy New Year to all.

All the parts are available for the kicker...including new Aftermarket. There's quite a few pieces to assemble. You will have to pull your Clutch Basket. I think the ring gear is already on your electric starts clutch basket. You won't know for sure till you pull it off.....I can check as I have parts manuals for the Ironheads. I could give you part numbers if you like. Check J&P Cycles web site www.jpcycle.com Look in the Vintage parts section. They might have a complete kit. I believe V-Twin does too. Some of the older HD shops probably have the OEM parts in stock also. You will definitely need a new correct kicker cover. Word of CAUTION...Pay attention to clearance tolerances. The kickers system is kind of crude, but works well when set up right and parts are new(ish) Worn parts and wrong clearances are main cause for the slipping.....and subsequent 'Sportster Knee'....Yes the stories are true and it hurts like hell...kind of like what happened to the great Joe Namath's knees..... :smoke Hrdly

wow, this thread has 15 pages already???

In the latest The Horse mag, one guy wrote his own report on '05 HD's. I can quote him saying that "Sportsters definately aren't chick bikes", and he mentioned that the 1200R will smoke any stock big twin.

Couple other things I didn't agree on, that the Custom models are for those with Big Twin Envy, where they want a big twin but can't afford one; and that no sportster should ever have forward controls on it.

That old triple was indeed a handful. It did “the dance of the fat lady” if you went into a corner a little hot, and it didn’t really have a throttle, it was more like an on off switch, when it came on the pipe the front wheel would pop up in the air :yikes , but in a straight line….WOW!

And yes, Thunderpaw, just turned 47 as a matter of fact. Not bad for an old broad :love1 .

Apprecite info on 74 xlh kicker, haven't really looked for that just yet , after the bobtail, it's next, and I would assume that if a kit is out there V-Twin's got it. I'm kinda leery about putting an old setup on it for the simple reason that my 53 has almost already done in my right knee, and if I'm not cafeful the left will be next...huh...on the 53 it's an easy fix, the ratchet inside the trans cover is worn out.

...and that no sportster should ever have forward controls on it.

I kinda agree that foward controls ruin the whole point of having a sportster, they make it more comfortable for a job it was never designed to excel at..it is designed to be a hooligan bike..not a cruiser. To each their own I reckon. Every custom owner I know wants a BT *shrugs*

Gotta disagree with you on this point. My wife loves her '04 XL883 Custom, and I have a lot of love for it as well. I think the look is fresh and awesome, and is pretty badazz in it's own right. If I were going to buy a new bike, a 1200 Custom would probably be the bike I'd get. No doubt there are a lot of people that buy the new Customs thinking they're getting a smaller version of a big twin, but it's not the bike's fault. The bike does awesome if you accept it as a Sportster, just a fancy one.

I do, however, dislike the forward controls, but that's my personal feeling. I have highway pegs on my '77, but for hard riding I like my controls back where they belong.

I don't think I would get a BT when it's time to get a bigger bike. I would just by a Jap cruiser. Those things have more displacement than a BT, about 1/2 the cost, a longer lasting water cooled motor. The main thing is the cost though.

Saying a Sportster is an entry level Harley is like saying you should buy a Corvette to work your way into a Suburban.

~Stroker

__________________________________________________ _________

I was told again a couple days ago that I was a big guy and I should have a bigger bike. I was polite and just said: "No way, Sportsters rule!"

But in case you don't feel like being polite, Here's a few:
(Note: not to be used by wimps.)

--

Girl's bike?? Ever have a girl kick your @%#?

--

Half a Harley?? I only need half a Harley to beat your piece of %&#$.

--

(point to the other guy's Bagger)

It's fallen and it can't get up!

At least I don't need a pit crew to get it out of the garage.

Does it have a bathroom?

Do you have to double-clutch that thing?

Ooo! A land yacht! Shall we call you "captain"?

--

Four phone poles for $100?

No??

How about $50, and I won't even use the nitrous.

I'll give you a head start, even.

Wait, I'll push mine.

--

And my personal favorite and I believe a Wizard original, which I said to a guy right off the top of my head one night last summer:

I have to ride a Sportster. My wife (or girl) won't LET me get a bigger bike, she says I've got too much between my legs already

You usually can't shut up a BT (big twin) *&%$#@ who wants to bad mouth a Sportster BUT you sure can challenge him/her to a race on the best local twisty road. Make sure you do it in front of his friends and tell him that the last slow @#% poser *&%#@ to the other end buys the beer. It may quiet him down OR you may get to prove your point when they get pissed and you have to run for your life. Either way, I'm proud to ride a Sportster.

~Crim

I found just starting the beast up for said loud mouth and friends is quite effective. You'd be surprised how jaws drop when the sound of nasty cams comes into the picture. This along with a crazed look in your eye (you know, the kind of look you get after you just finished killing your parents) make for some animated fun.

~Coach

I just look over & say, "Wanna race"? Nine times outta ten, that shuts 'em up right away. If that doesn't work, I'll race them. Then they ALL shut up! Actions speak louder than words.

It's hard for BT riders to say much with a mouth full of rubber smoke & Sportster exhaust fumes!

~Axe

In response to some j/o who once ribbed me for riding a sportster I replied "funny that any time I've watched a B.O.T.T. no one has even entered a big twin, I wonder why?"

Also anyone who boasts about the new 88' twin cam can be dismissed with "gee just add two more cams and maybe you can keep up"

Them Texas women are almost as bad as the men when it comes to telling tall tales...

A Texan meets a lady and they go out for some time. The Texan asks the lady to marry him but she replies: "Oh I require my man to have 5 million dollars" "No problem, little lady" responds the Texan "Why that's just pocket money to me."

"Well I also require my man to have at least 1,000 acres of land" the young lady reply's "Oh heck my sweet little one I have much more than that" reply's the Texan.

"Well also, I will need my man to have at least 12 inches" replied the lady.

"Well now that IS a problem I will have to get back to you on that one" replied the Texan.

A few days later the Texan calls his beloved and asks to see her. When they meet, he gently takes her hand and softly tells her "Honey child, my doctor said he can cut it down to any size you wish."

I have the 2004 Xl883, and could give a sh** if anyone thinks its a girls bike, I have an 83 FLHT shovelhead Tour Glide, which is arguably the biggest Harley made, but unless you're riding hundreds of miles, its very heavy in stop and start driving, and not real quick. Doesn't stop real quick either by the way. For running around, the Sportster is the best bike out there, and I am pretty happy with the rubber mounted engine, the bigger 150 series tire, the shorter mirrors, headlight, etc. that they improved on over the old sportster. I bought it for my wife, but its "too big", so I have to get her an XL883L now. She feels more comfortable able to flat foot it at a stop sign, and it almost fits, so I figure the 1.3 inches shorter will be perfect for her, plus the bars look like they might be bent back a little more. We learned how to ride on Buell Blasts, which we PROUDLY referred to as half a sportster! :) A co-worker was talking about moving up to a big twin, and I told him to go ahead and get his Road King, but keep his sportster or he'd regret it. He can always say its his wife's bike <evil grin>

Then you have low expectations of fun or rather a different definition than myself. *shrugs* Usually when we lust after a new bike we are being far less critical of how fun it is because we are just looking for that last shove to justify it. Ummm, no, actually I find fun in raw torque and blistering speed off the line and down the straights. I have yet to find a Sporty that can stretch the arms and stay on my rear fender for any length of time with the throttle at WOT. :shhhh
My BT may not be able to keep up with a Sporty in the twisties at top speeds, but it is still maneuverable enough satify me. Oh, and for that "cool" factor, we both know that the chicks dig and prefer a man with a "full sized" HOG. And Im not just talking about my ride either mind you. :p :clap :tour :bump

Yes but sadly a full size motorcycle is usually oposite to the other one that the chicks desire, as are corvettes and large houses. Your definition of pure straightline acceleration is still obviously different than mine if you are satisfied with your BT. Unless it runs 9s on a street tire, it is slow. Disregard of course if your scoot is in the single digits. I highly doubt your BT has what most would call "blistering acceleration"..

Dont know what it runs in a straight line on a 1320,probably isnt hitting 9's. But Ive had no problems shaming a sport bike on the open road on more than one occasion. The bike runs 100-125 foot pounds of torque over the entire rpm range which is nothing to sneeze at. And this is from a moderate sized 98" BT.

wickedsprint
21st January 2005, 06:41
*yawn*...maybe nothing to sneeze at..nothing to gawk at either because I don't think your bike would even touch the tens.

My diesel pickup truck makes well over 700 ft lbs of torque, doesn't make it fast..although by your definition it probably has blistering acceleration. Bragging about torque is silly..timeslips don't lie.

I own and ride an Electra Glide. By no means is it a FUN ride. It's a great ride, a smooth ride, a nice ride, a great 2-up ride, even an awesome ride by many standards, but not fun. Not when compared to any of the Sportsters in our stables. The '04 shares some of the above comparisons with the Electra Glide, more-so than the Ironheads, but it's still a wicked fun bike. If I buy another big twin it will probably be a Shovelhead or older, or a new Superglide, only because it's the least expensive new BT, and it' the most stripped down. Still, I can't for the life of me imagine it being near what a Sporty is.

If I had to explain, you wouldn't understand.

He waits until we are around the sales folks and then says in a big loud hairy voice "I see you ride a weenie pick"…….I stopped and looked at him thinking what the heck is he talking about. So I ask, what the hell is a weenie pick? He said " Sportster, because that is the model of Harleys that a weenie picks." I said oh that is nice, what kind of Harley do you have I ask. He said "I don't have one but but but"….. I interrupted and said well I guess we know who the weenie is. The sales folks had a good laugh. He then followed me around trying to tell me how he use to be a Harley Davidson mechanic and what carb works best on an Ironhead. I just ignored him while I looked for bolts.

My Roadster certainly isn't the fastest thing on two wheels. That's a good thing...for me. It has kept up, easily, with all of the BTs I've ridden with. I find it somewhat challenging to run down the road, twist the grip and try to keep it from hitting 100mph before I'm ready for it. That's all I need. Probably more. Really.

I think the more you get used to riding your Roadster, the more aggressive you'll find you can be with it. It ain't no slouch. It'll EASILY keep up, and MORE!

Okay so a co-worker that has a BT say's his daily girley bike shit to me again at the time clock last night. I told him okay big mouth how would you like me to show you what its like to get your ass whipped by a girls bike ? Well he said where and when, and we did. It was a clean quick race. After I caught up with him he said " Thats the prettiest girls bike I ever beat !!!!!! The only thing I could remember saying back was " yeah but I don't have a penis issue like you either. " How stupid I felt, I couldn't even come up with a good come back.....

It has been awhile since I measured the seat hieght on my 86. but I have found that a lot of gals andGuys that hve less than a 30 inch inseam seam to be daunted by this.Asfar as the fact goes with racing, just put a tranny drive sprocket that is one tooth bigger and you will be surprized with the results

I work with a BT owner and you can messure his IQ by what he paid for his SE duece with the fancy paint job, $27,000! Now I could build a few Sporties to kick ass with that kind of money.

For my money a sportster is the BEST bike that Harley Davidson makes. They will out run,and out handle anything else that they make. This is from a guy who has a Sportster and a Dyna, and has hade many "big twins". The morons that say they are "girls bikes" or "half a Harley" i guarantee don't ride 2000 miles a year and don't have a clue about motorcycles. They ride from bar to bar with thier "costume's" on.

:tour & :D is all you can do on whatever bike makes ya happy is how I see it...As long as Harley makes bikes this argument(for lack of a better term) will go on...bet ya if you go to the V-Rod forum they're complainin about Sporty's lookin down the nose at them, or somebody.....I got a good one though, my buddy Jim who rides with me alot, on a FXDL with tons of $$$ dumped iinto it , beutiful bike fast too. He jokingly hits me w/ the girl bike angle sometimes, but one time I was on my toes...and started lookin real hard all over my bike , under the fenders, under the seat, gas tank, even got on my hands and knees, after a couple minutes of this Jim (puzzled) asks "what the hell are ya doin".....I grinned real big, and told him "I looked everywhere man , but I just can't seem to find that patch of fur"......we both :censor ing died laughing...now its like a local joke...you can imagine some of the humor that comes from that.... :censor ing LOL...Mike 74xlh :smoke

My wife bought an 883. Only because of the sleek look of it, and this nice root beer flame on black paint. She said "it's perfect" I won't even have to do anything to it. 'nuff said.
She was working late and asked me to pick it up. I rode it the 20 miles home and Man I was sad to arrive, I could have just kept going.

4 times at lights on the way home people shouted "Nice Bike!" with thumbs up and such. One of them was a real cutie.

If that's what happens on a girl's bike I"m IN! Sign me up!

I own and have owned other bikes besides my 86 XLH At this time I also have a 77 FLH . Last summer I traded an XS1100 yamaha that was faster and more comfort on the long hauls than the sporty or FLH but not as much fun to ride as my good old sporty.Tilldeath do us part Just remember SPORTY MOTYSICKLES IS FUN TO RIDE.

Hi all, I'm new here , and it looks like a cool site.I now ride a small Honda cruiser, and I am going to be buying a Sportster this year, and I'm not getting into a BT, for the same reason I wouldn't ride a big metric, their to friggin hard to ride twistys, like I ride.My brother wanted to give me a deal on a Vulcan1500 he was selling , but you could hardly turn it around in the street out front of my house, so no way.But any way, glad to be here!Ride Safe

I was in a gas station one day talking with a friend when a guy rode up on what sounded like a Harley to me. When I peeked out the wiindow to see what it was he was riding, I only saw a portion of the back of his bike and right away I assumed it was a Sportster. So when the guy comes in to pay for his gas, I ask him, what is that your riding a Sportster and right away the guy says " Is that an insult? Sportsters are "GIRLY BIKES", :madhead That's a Dyna Low rider I have. I thought that all Harley riders where as one no matter what type of ride you had. So I guess what I'm getting at here is, have any of you out there had this type of run in and if so, what was your responce and how did you deal with it? I'd like to hear everyones opinion on this one.

This subject has been beat to death, defleshed, bones scattered, then reassembled, reborn, and killed all over again. And again. And again. And I think a few more times.

Any motorcycle that a girl is riding is a girl's bike. Any motorcycle that a boy is riding is a boys bike. You encountered a boy.

Around here, we prefer men and women.
