View Full Version : HOG Tales July/Aug 2007 "Quiet Pipes Speak Volumes"
chrishajer 22nd July 2007, 18:44 I can't figure out if HOG Tales magazine is available online or not, even to members. The last page, the 'Exhaust' column is entitled "Quiet Pipes Speak Volumes" by Bob Lowery. Here is a scan of it, sorry if it's been posted elsewhere, and sorry, but I don't like typing when something is already in digital format SOMEWHERE:

I wonder why H-D and HOG don't publish their email addresses. Maybe to prevent flames over stuff like this ...

I have often wondered this too. Not necessarily to flame them, but to ask questions or whatever.
The content of those mags seem more and more geared to being PC and less to catering to the bikers that have made H-D what it is.

I'd agree with that, and to promote the "Corporate Image" .
el jinete fantasma 22nd July 2007, 20:14 I'd agree with that, and to promote the "Corporate Image" .
Yeah... "Look, we're being responsible! We can't help what people do with our products once they leave the factory!!) Right. And how many "off-road" pipes do you actually see off-road?

I don't disagree that Hog Tales and The Enthusiast etc are going to pander to corporate interests, I mean, NO SHYTE, that's why they exist.
That said, maybe, just maybe, instead of "catering" to the dumbass "bikers that have made H-D what it is" (ya know, like the idiots who taught for decades not to use your front brake  ) they're looking to teach the newbies the RIGHT WAY and not the juvinile delinquent, bad-boy wannbe, poserific BS...
Just my $0.02 :D
jamez1965 24th July 2007, 15:18 If EVERYONE is a troublemaking bad boy, being a troublemaking bad boy isn't cool anymore!
Remember when riding a motorcycle said, "I'm crazy and freespirited"? Nowadays it just says, "I'm a consumer."
Sport-Ed 24th July 2007, 15:47 My CShack M-Pipes are not crazy loud, but they are loud enuff for me (I'm a drummer, so that sound is the sh1t). I want to hear em, cause I like how they sound on my Sporty... same point made in the article.
I find the article only questioning the hypothesis that "Loud" saves lives. I sure as hell don't rely on my pipes to save my skin, so I kind of agree with the author. Doesn't stop me from hittin the throttle a bit coming up to an intersection, if I think the cagers around me might notice me if I do.....
Duane Wood 31st July 2007, 08:09 Of course, all the H-D videos glamorize the V-Twin rumble and make CERTAIN the audio picks it up. They KNOW that a large part of what sells H-D's is that unmistakable sound of freedom that can be heard clear at the top of Bear Tooth Pass, from the bike just starting to climb the grade below (or 20 or 50 roaring bikes), and someone at the viewpoint might be stopping in at Bear Tooth H-D to dream. If H-D's had to be Honda quiet, Milwaukee would be a ghost town nearly overnight. Loud pipes are a strong political statement. Very loud pipes are a very strong political statement. Choose your level of political activity!!!
Sandman883 31st July 2007, 09:24 Of course that is the position of HD. And that is not the only time that HD has addressed the loudness of exhaust pipes. C'mon peeps, can't ya see that they are trying to tell folks to chill on the excessively loud pipes, because we the riders are going to screw ourselves with our want for loud pipes, ignoring other peoples rights to not hear them, then it will be regulated so that we don't have a choice in the matter (BTW....I love loud pipes, but I know enough to respect that not everyone else does). You know, we can do simple things like not revving the crap out of our bikes in the neighborhood and at stoplights. Hey, I like the sound of drags as much as any lug-nut out there, but when you're sitting at a red light constantly revving the damn things, ya just look stupid (not directed at anyone here in particular, so don't nobody get ya panties in a wad).
Sandman......sporting Screaming Eagle II's (baffles in cause they are loud enough!)and riding respectfully when it's called for.
xllent01 31st July 2007, 09:52 The "Badboy" or "Bikers of the Past" are mostly dead and gone, A Biker used to be a scorned by the public as a trouble maker,
way before motorcycles ever became "The Kewl Thing",
Now were left with Corporate types who can't even change there own oil, or know the difference between a plug or spoke wrench,
These people are the very one's leading you to quiet pipes??? FTW, Ride Your Own Ride!!!!!!
Why do you spend $50 a year to read that Corporate BS????? to bad the pages are so glossy cause it would make better toilet paper IMHO!!!!
:roflblack :roflblack :roflblack :doh :doh :roflblack :roflblack :roflblack
barraphernalia 31st July 2007, 14:58 While I’m sure there is definitely some corporate C.Y.A. involved in publishing the article, it doesn’t mean it’s not spot on.
The article isn’t going after loud pipes in general, it’s going after the inaccurate rationalization that “loud pipes save lives.”
I guess people regurgitate that B.S. because they think it sounds better than to say, “I want to be loud because I thinks it’s cool, I like it and that’s all that matters to me.” – Which is of course the only real reason anyone has loud pipes.

Good article, read it last night.
Thanks for posting it.
Clarinetcat 31st July 2007, 15:26 Why do you spend $50 a year to read that Corporate BS?????
One-year HOG membership (including "Corporate BS" magazines) came with the purchase of a brand new Harley-Davidson Motorcycle.
Did you read the article, or are you just spewing?!? :dunno

Some of US have owned more than a year, matter of fact this would be my 3rd H-D in less than 10 yrs, :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh
so when the year comes up i'm sure you'll be eagerly waiting at the mailbox to re-new your membership for more "Corporate BS", so in H-D's little world nothing is free, you paid for it one way or another, so enjoy it!!
i for one could give a rats a$$ for the catolog and free atlas they send you, like i said if the pages weren't so glossy!!!:roflblack :roflblack :roflblack :roflblack
So even if i did read or not does that make me spew or just add to my post count like everyone else around here????

My year membership was up last month.
No, I didn't re-new and have no intention to.
Anything else you want to assume incorrectly?
So even if i did read or not does that make me spew or just add to my post count????
If you read it with an open mind, you might learn something.
If you didn't read it, your opinion on "Corporate BS" is meaningless.
If you did read it, spew away... it's your opinion.
You need to add to your post count anyway.

Carl-04XL 31st July 2007, 17:17 If we all thought and acted the same way, then this world would be boring as hell and suicides would be 'ho hum'.
I've kept my membership up. Not for the atlas, nor the magazine, but because the local HOG chapter has a lot of good people. A fellow member had a minor problem one Saturday night. It seems that the fork lock on his BT decided to not unlock. Midnight on a Saturday is not the time to look for an open dealer, but one of the local dealers was going to open the next day because of the State Rally being in town that weekend. His HOG membership got his bike a free ride, on a rollback, to that dealer and the fork lock was fixed the next morning.
Is membership worth it, well only you can decide.
Sandman883 31st July 2007, 20:36 Way off topic here, but since it was brought up....my 2 cents. I got my bike used, so didn't have HOG in the beginning. I actually purchased it because I wanted the roadside assistance. As far as not being worth anything else, well, it got me in to the Daytona Racetrack for free during Bike Week to check out the bike races going on, while all other non-HOGs had to pay. I know that don't mean much to a lot of folks, but since I live nearby and go to Daytona all the time, it was worth it. I also have ROK (Riders of Kawasaki). No, I don't own a Kawi, but the membership was free at bike week and they give roadside assistance on any bike, not just Kawasaki.
